The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The song is adapted from the mezzosoprano aria, "Mon coeur s'ouvre à ta voix". Interestingly, Wilson hits (and leaves far behind) a note, near the end that Elīna Garanča doesn't attempt when the sings it. People ask why we have no popular singers like Wilson today. It's because they are so extraordinary. We were lucky to have had him.
If you listen the melody is Peter Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto #1 in B Flat Major.
His voice was the best
Jackie Wilson may well have the greatest and most versatile voice in the history of American popular music
A fellow named Presley would like a word with you.
Even Elvis Presley thought so,he said so in interviews
you dont have to rely on Elvis...every student of music that ever lived will tell you Jackie Wilson was a far superior singer....
@@TonyGPizza lol...where in the world do you get this stuff....there isnt a vocal authority...historian etc...who ever lived that would say elvis could sing as well as Jackie Wilson...
I'd be only too happy to have that discussion, but it wouldn't be an argument. Elvis himself said "Jackie, there is no reason why you shouldn't be considered the greatest singer in the business."
Saw American Idol last night and the winners could not smell Jackie's jock
He just had that voice
I said of Wilson's great voice a while ago, that he could even sing opera. Wow, and here he is! Awesome!
We were very lucky to have had Jackie Wilson, just like Celine Dion ❤❤❤
Jackie Wilson didn't need autotune because he was a natural singer!
He had some voice
What a beautiful song and Jackie does it fantastic
What a set of pipes Jackie Wilson had. May you rest in peace.
Aww mannnn his yodels were perfect
That’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Jackie Wilson had an amazing voice he was one of the best singers of all time. ❤😢 I’m sending this song to my husband in heaven I love you forever 😢❤
He thrilled me so, I turned a back-over flip. I come back to videos of Jackie just to fall in love all over again. In 3 days it will be the 60th anniversary of this performance. Hard to believe.
Fantastic, that part in the middle of the song where Jackie vocalizes without words is not on the actual 45 record. Unbelievable.
The LORD blessed this brother with a special skill set that entertains yet to this day!!
There are just no words sufficient to cover this dude...can one imagine this former boxer today on a talent show??? A Blues singer, an R&B singer, a Rock & Roll singer, a Pop Singer, an Operatic-Tenor singer...it's like a combo of Tom Jones, Elvis, and Mario Lanza...
Took the words out or my mouth...
But better because black people just sound better
Boom
He was a once in a life time popular singer. RIP great one
Sensational... he had some vocal range! Thank you for sharing! 💖
Such a beautiful voice
Can't wait for postings of "Greatest Hurt, For me and my gal, and Hearts "
His voice would give you goosebumps! Fabulous.
A powerful and versatile voice and he had a great vocal range. I don't know how many octaves it covered but a superb singer and performer.

Oh my God. What talent
Performed 58 years ago , and Jackie's performances are consistently getting more views than most other videos on this channel.....and deservedly so .
Truly the most gifted and talented recording artist / performer in the rock and roll and rhythm and blues area that ever lived .
Now if this channel would post Jackie Wilson's performance of " THE GREATEST HURT " and also his performance of ""HEARTS" from this Ed Sullivan Show ; I have no doubt they would each get 50,000 views within the first week ......I'm looking forward to it .
The man was masterful !!!! One of a kind ! 💯⭐️❤️😎
This is absolutely incredible! Another one of my favorite singers! First Mary Hopkin, then Teresa Brewer and now Jackie Wilson (and yesterday, Connie Francis)! I have absolutely loved everything you have uploaded today; this is one of the best channels on UA-cam! :) Jackie had a phenomenal voice. "Night" was actually his highest charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 going all the way up to #4 in 1960 (it also charted #3 on the R&B chart) and it is one of my favorites. The melody comes from the Saint-Saens aria "My Heart at thy Sweet Voice", one of the most beautiful melodies ever composed. Thank you so much for this fantastic video!
Thank you so much for added info!! 👌
@@finallybrainunderstood479 You're very welcome!
Yes yes yes
A huge hit for this operatic soul singer. But the B side, "Doggin' Around" is the keeper.
you are out of your mind..lol..this is one of his best ever vocals
@@jadezee6316 I’m just amazed that the same singer can sing both types of songs, slipping from one genre to the other so effortlessly. Some fans are going to prefer Doggin’ Around, others will prefer Night. Both songs showcase his raw skill and talent. Can’t say that about many performers, then or now.
Camille Saint-Saëns really cranked out the hits.
Amazing!!...vocal Jackie
He was TALENT
Primera vez que veo a Jacky Wilson sin sus movimientos
Jackie Wilson
Heard this on Innocent Blood got me to thinking this plus Tonight You Belong To Me and first songs in Dracula's Daughter the musical. C'mon its here use it.
Got another one for DD the musical We Belong Together.

Elvis)Sinatra=Jaaaackie Wilson, wow!!!
Jackie had a Top Ten hit in 1963, "Baby Workout." Hope Ed let him sing it. Performing a hit from 1960 - "Night" - wasn't going to benefit Wilson's career.
I'm pretty sure he followed up with Lonely Teardrops instead
Jackie wasn't as great here as he performed it in the studio but almost no one is.Roy Orbison is the only one that I've heard in person who sounded even better live.
Jackie sounded better live than the studio. You can't judge from this performance which was "rushed' in order to fill the time schedule.
I saw Jackie perform approximately 150 times, and NO ONE has ever come close to him...I was there when Elvis first saw Jackie in 1966 at the "Trip" in Hollywood, and he went totally crazy watching him...he told Jackie, "There is no reason why you're not the #1 singer in the world."
@@PutOnASweaterI thought Elvis first saw Jackie in 56’ because in the quarter he mentions a member of wards dominoes
@@CDR807 Elvis was perfuming in Las Vegas in 1956 and went to see' Billy Ward & The Dominos'. On the recording of The Million Dollar Quartet...had Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis on the LP cover...Elvis is heard saying that one of The Dominos performed some his songs better than him, however he did not mention, the name of the one who sang them, he only referred to "Mr. Ward's Dominos" .
Billy Ward told me that it was not Jackie that sang the "Elvis" songs, though he could not remember at that moment who did, but was very certain that it was not Jackie.. Remember that this was 1956, that is also the year Jackie left the Dominos to pursue a solo career. Jackie had never met Elvis until 1966 at "The Trip" nightclub in Hollywood,Ca. where Jackie was performing. Jackie told me Elvis said to him, "It's about time the White Elvis met the Black Elvis". I also have a tape of Jackie being interviewed in the UK that they had never met until "The Trip". There are so many false "Jackie-Elvis" stories on the internet and they keep being reposted that they've become the "new facts". One-story goes that jackie was on the set of Elvis' movie "Girl, Girl,Girls", and was even sitting in a nightclub scenic in the movie. That movie was made in 1962, FOUR YEARS BEFORE they met, but you will find that "fact" all over the internet.
As to "The Million Dollar Quarter" album which features images of the four artists mentioned, including Johnny Cash...Johnny is not even on the album, he had left the studio before they started taping the conversation.
You’re right, but he did an amazing job on Hearts the year before this particular show.
@@PutOnASweater Awesome! Imagine being there with the two biggest stars of a lifetime . MAN! Jackie Wilson?!? That’s insane . If you don’t mind could you upload any clips of Jackie Wilson interviews, I have seen/ heard him speak very few times outside of performing and I’d love to see/hear it.
Was he operatically trained? He sings from the diaphragm.
I believe he studied with a vocal coach from Juilliard for two years straight before he was famous
When he was in the group, "Billy Ward & The Dominos", Billy would coach him, but I don't believe he had formal training.
@@nicjacksonmusic I think all the training was within Billy Wards group, you can hear the improvements from when he started in the group till when he went solo. very much a raw talent to begin with.
