What Are COMIC BOOK Collectors Buying In A Bear Market? Discussing The 2022 Recession & The Hobby
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this video I interview COMIC BOOK DEALERS & COLLECTORS at the Near Mint Sunday's a Southern California Comic Book show to get their perspective on what books people are buying in the bear market and recession of 2022. Obviously with everything going on in the global economy some of the prices have dipped a little bit. Does that mean collecting trends are changing? These dealers and collectors share their perspective.
Let me know what you guys think about what they had to say, obviously at the end of the day make sure to always buy what you like and collect responsibly as Como Comics always says.

Thank you for having me on the show! Always a blast talking comics with you brotha! 🍻
Absolutely, thanks sharing your knowledge!!
For investment, Keys are always important. I've become selective with that aspect of my collecting also. But I also collect a lot of regular issues, of comics which look generally just ok. It's not just about key issues, the hobby of comics. It's about comics which appeal and look like a good enough thrill to reading and the artwork. Comics of quality often attract good prices as well, so buy those things you like as well as those key issues.
Is siktc #1 a good one to buy ?
@@ziggyc4474 In the end, Bone from the 1990s proved a long term pretty good investment. SIKTC#1` will probably stick around long term because it hit the fan market big enough. I'd say it probably is a good long term investment if you can get a high grade copy at a good price.
Very interesting to hear multiple people saying that runs are still things people are buying. That's cool to hear because keys are great but the runs are the lifeblood that propels the hobby forward from generation to generation.
Agreed! Yeah I've heard from a lot of dealers even outside this show talking about how people are getting back into runs which is very cool
Thank you again @ Swag! we all need these Vids!! Brad from FVF
Thanks Brad! Always great getting your perspective on collecting 🙌
Rare comics don’t get less rare. Everyone knows you buy when others are selling. Then when the economy flips than you make your money. If you sell because you are nervous what do you do with the cash ? If you need it to pay bills then it’s different. But that’s why you don’t invest in things if you don’t have a good emergency fund first. Good video to help reinforce the basics of investing. Spider Man however is the best character.
Done a few big trades this year. Finally landed an FF5.
wow, huge book! Congrats!
There's over 7,000 languages spoken on this planet but these guys decided to speak pure facts 💥
Very cool video and seeing how things are changing but the love for comics are still here.. and that won't change.
For sure!
New Sub here. Ironically I purchased a Captain America 100 last week and love it. Keep up the great content!
Another great interview segment, Swaggle! Hell Destroyer AND Elveen's Comics?! Awesome! "Get our Swaggle on!!" 😆
w00t w00t!
One of my first videos I watched on your channel was like this but last year!!! Awesome content and I love how you ask several vendor's their opinions not just one that preaches your same view on comics. Thank you!!!
I’m agree with that Forever Book and I call it foundational. I see some similarities in our philosophy. Foundational books are universally recognized by everybody. The Jane foster stuff might be important to some, but others it means nothing. Cap 100 is important to everyone.
For sure. Love your “foundation” term…you always gotta have your “starting players”
Great video bud. Awesome to hear from all the dealers
Fantastic video. I’m gearing up to make my first big buys/trades and this served as great research before I go for it. (And Elveen’s totally right… I’m always run-filling!)
Solid video. Hopefully they can expand the convention hours as it picks up steam. Or make it a 2 day show. 5 hours isn't nearly enough.
Yeah that would be nice for sure...8 hours would be perfect
FVF Comics is great advice as usual !
Plug: Heroes in Crisis. Good action with Harley Quinn and Booster Gold. People might like this comic.
Loved hearing these collectors and what they have to say about the current state of things in the market right now. Awesome content thanks Swag!
Glad you enjoyed!
Great video, Swag. This was an interesting look at how the economy is affecting collectors. Keys are always going to be big draws as investments, but I and many others are run fillers and are just looking for good books to read. Thanks for sharing this.
Hell Destroyer Comics is a vibe 😆 love that interview, keep up the good work Swagsss 👏
thanks for bringing this to the home! can't make it out too much these days,..... also, your hair is always on point! lol
Nice video I like the fresh approach the interviews were great and help solidify my own collecting habits in this economy
GREAT VIDEO! This video is good for all collectibles. Thanks for this! *High Five*
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really appreciate the video and the discussion with the sellers/collectors/buyers. I also appreciated the information regarding the GA PCH that was covered by one of the commentators. Thanks Swaggle!
Thank you for the informative information on the state of our hobby durig this recession. Let's admit it, we are in a resession. I am here in Texas and seeing the same trend. Focus on buying economically priced grails and keys. Yesterday I attended the Greater Austin Comic Con and unfortunaltely saw sellers still commanding high prices on their books (grails & keys). A bird in the hand ....... well, you know what I mean.
In any event, thank you for the market update. You have a new subscriber.
Best video yet. Love hearing about market trends from CA, USA. Brick n mortar comic shops are cutting their monthly pre-orders to the bone due to 'recession' but some are still speculating like on Batman vol. 2 # 125 variant cover.
Great video, love hearing the various opinions. Happy to say I got my Captain America 100, this past weekend. It's a CGC 6.5, and arrives in the mail tomorrow, can't wait to get it in my hands. Next on my short list, Hulk 102, Ms. Marvel #1 (1977) and Iron Man 1. Loved what Christain said about Scarlett Witch being important to him, Black Widow is important to me, so I am always picking up various BW books. Everyone has a favorite.
That's awesome, congrats! The "Big Premiere" books are some of my favorites :D
Thanks for the great video Swags. I was thinking about hitting up Near Mint Sundays when I come to Cali in the fall.
No prob! Its a great show..."pure comics" def worth checking out.
Christian had the right idea I'm doing the same thing. I think everyone got so key happy that they forgot runs are cool too and you can sell full runs for big money down the road.
Eleveen made some great points, and shout out to everyone of course! Everyone is on point with their answers and opinions. I also believe it’s been sooooo many new comic book collectors such as myself, I’ve been collecting and reading and wanting keys for me now I understand a lot of what these guys have been talking about. I want “forever keys” the ones I read I want to get rid of for them “key comics” for pc purposes like Wolverine 1-4 limited series. I have issue 4 and it’s my first big key, but the hunt is the fun part for me to get those and also ITS A KEY! Lol
This was an amazing vid swag, thank you very much for sharing. I really love it
Nice show thanks swagelhaus really appreciate your info personally I m going for misprint and recalled comics but I have been for about six months so not much change for me but I have noticed a bit of a dip great time to buy here in U.K. anyway thanks again
Great video Swag. You got boots on the ground in this one.
Great video- the viewpoints of pro sellers are priceless!
… or maybe 20% off🤣
Love your content! Keep up the stellar work.
Thanks again brother
"Other people on youtube might have more followers, but they are not as interesting as Swagglehaus."
So True.
Great video Swaggle. I am collecting silver age books I love. Not really interested in modern. This next year or so will be a great buyer’s market.
Wife’s pressuring me to sell huge collection…this vid was helpful…I just don’t wanna spend all that time making a list!
Excellent point about non comic book collectors imaging characters through movies.
Great video. Love hearing from the dealers and then looking them up on-line. For example I looked up the guy from FVF Comics and noticed that he had a Atom #1 I had seen on E-Bay or an auction house. I recognized it because Dr. Jason Woodrue had big date stamp on his forehead. Keep up the nice work. If one of your videos leads to a sale I will make sure to let the seller know to thank Mr. Swagglehaus.
Always enjoy these 'man on the street' ish vids. Gotta get myself to a con sometime soon. Keep up the good work, Swag!
Thanks!!
Great stuff, thank you!
Damn, my two favorite people, Swagglehaus and Ian Hoodrat!!!! 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
Great VIDEO....alot of really sound advice from fellow collectors, thanks Swagg (Darkhawk #1) All the Way !!!😎
w00t w00t! Thanks!
@@Swagglehaus 👍

@@gasd3390 I think you invented a new character...(run with it !!!) 🤓
@@timshooter8033 all u my bro hah
Great show. Good to see people heading out to the shows.
How do collectors find out about local shows in the OC? Thanks
I just follow all the instagram accounts and google shows in my area.
Great stuff man. Always putting out great content. That elveen guy is all over the place tho. Lol. I saw 2 dealers essentially said investing in comics is recession proof. Good job for keeping a straight face.
hehe, Elveen is the man! Becoming a mini tradition that I always have to speak to him at the shows I go to :D
Never ask a dealer lol .... its like asking a real estate agent if its a good time to buy a house, they will all say... its a great opportunity right now LOL
hehe true, but a lot of people were also just collectors :)
For what it's worth I'm part of another collecting community primarily high and older magic cards and they've crashed a ton.
They're not going anywhere they're still worth it but now is a great time to buy some of the most expensive cards have dipped 20-30%
Great content. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Great video!
Nice video swag very helpful
I think as the world population continues to grow and the comic collector market increases, there is more solid money generally still in the economy and collectables like comics become a more desired collectable and asset.
I'm finishing personal runs because everybody else is key obsessed. And I'm selling keys because comics are on a bubble that's close to popping. Once the dust settles and the speculators run off to the next Big Thing, I'll buy them back on the cheap, ;)
Rinse, repeat.
Bro I was just at this show.
the guy with the Chargers' jersey sort of looks like the actor who played the Executioner in the Thor films...
I had every silver age/bronze age Marvel comic starting with Fantastic Four #1 all the way to Dazzler #1 (the 1st direct comic) so from Nov '61 to 1980. I only kept my CGC 4.0 AF 15 and my CGC 9.8 of 181.
I sold them all in one shot in 2019 and I am glad i did.
This hobby much like the Mopar muscle cars (also sold my 1969 Dodge Charger the same month) has been taken away from the fans and enthusiasts and big money has replaced them.
The fun and community is gone and will never return.
Can we get a video on the amazing fantasy 15 comic coming to veve swagglehaus?
Veve have you heard about their comics digital?
Inflation doesn't currently have me by the balls (thankfully). I am not buying as much as I was but am methodically searching for major keys at discounted priced.
To answer Christian's question: I would like to have a stack of cash so I can then buy stacks of comics, including a stack of Cap 100s. Funny how as he was talking about Cap 100, I stumbled across someone online selling a 6.5 copy of that issue.
Is it weird that I *really* want a keeper of Cap #117 & #197? I've sold a couple of both in mid-grade but wish I had kept one of each 😔 I know #197 isn't considered a "big key" like #117 is but I love it so much.
Great content as ever 👍Noob question?? Going to comic con Dublin next month, do they sell only raw comics or can you get slabbed also?😊
Depends on the dealer, but I would imagine that you would be able to find both :)
@@Swagglehaus keep up the great work 👌👍
It could be simply summed up by saying the love of comics is at the core. But once that love is gone.. we are talking about a crash with a Capital C. And all this mild speculation and exhausting movies and TV show I think it's just around the corner
Nothing is prettier than a key in mylar on the wall. It's like looking at a classic car or a pretty woman
Some comics that I've been watching for a few years or months on eBay are going down in seller price the last couple of months so I'm picking them up for bargain prices. Comics that have been $50-$75 dollars buy it now I can pick up for $10 and nobody is bidding against me. Buy these comics before the millionaires that currently only buy canvas art start adding comics to their portfolios because it will happen soon.
I've been telling people we are in a buyer's market and to buy the downs.
My thought is tough to move the big book..dealers would rather have 5 $1000 books, 1 $5000 book. Trades could be the way to get that big book.
Yogi Bear comics are hot now I've heard.
Darkhawk cinematic universe incoming
Lets hope so :)
What’s the reference to “grills” ? I know that a dumb question for insiders but heard it a few times and wondered…acronym?
The term “grail” refers to a collectible that typically takes years for a collector to acquire. 👍
Thanks for sharing … u have numbers to the vendors that was at that u could share ? ( I live nearby) … I missed u, I was there ..
Amazing Fantasy #16
You gotta. Heck out VeVe!!!!
Correction: Swagglehaus and Javid together on the same show!!! ❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏
whoaaaaaaaaaaaa who the heck is Katie!!!????!!!!!
Nah, Swagglehaus is not the best. At the top of this youtube game, it's much of a muchness. The top content creators are all very good.
I thought I walked past you at the show
Ultimate fallout #4 is a key I’m after Right now I have edge of spider verse 2 I want ultimate fallout 4 to Go with it I hope I acquire it sometime this year
Same here. I'm debating whether to buy it raw or already graded.
Hope you guys find your books :)
Wow Andre Iguodala
With a 1+ year turnaround at every reputable grading company, I'm amazed that people are buying ANY raw books that aren't Golden Age except at STEEP discounts
I agree
I m going to guess the top 2 are Amazing Spider-man 139 and Incredible Hulk 258.
Lol one interview reminded me of a saying..."don't get high on your own supply". Can you guess which one?
Money > Captain America 100
Its an emotion thing I think
What horrible financial advice. I recently invested $100,000 in Captain America #100s
Hi
Recession Day is coming in a week or two. The numbers don’t look good.
Yeah looking like a certainty. Will see what happens when they officially announce
Elveen Comic dude that California type of flakey.
Bears I guess..? Lol
How is this a bear market? Is the stock market in a bear market yet or just on the down side after 10 years of being strong???? Comics are still strong and the big keys will always be that way..... Learn what a recession is before you mention it. Lol.
Female Thor will never be a generally accepted "forever" book. This MCU is garbage.
