When our son was in middle school he and a friend were walking home from school. His friends' mother and I were coming home from a meeting, and she said to her son, "Put your trombone in the car". That boy said, "F### off" and kept walking. His mother said nothing. That evening, I said to my son, "How come you never try that language with me?" His answer....."I want to live". I can't imagine a mother letting a child talk to her like that with no consequences.

My son had a friend that wanted to have him go with him somewhere. I told my son Tim that no he could not go with that friend because I didn't trust him, like his actions, and I was parenting as a single mom because the boy's dad died when they were 7, 12, and 17. The kid came by the house and said your bigger than She is come on let's just go. Son said no thank you cause I'm not gonna be picking my self up off the floor when I disrespect her. I will just stay right here. I was so proud of him and that kid never came back because he could not drag my son I to trouble.

When my 4 boys were young, 3 of the 4 loved to read. #2 asked me once why I read so much and I told him that the books tell a story and I can see it in my mind while I am reading. One of my thick books came up missing. The son who didn't like to read returned it to me and said, "I see what you meant!" He had read the entire book in 1 1/2 weeks and never stopped reading!

To help children who don’t like to read, read to them, read to them, read to them! Even when they the isolated skills to read to them. Read books with beautiful language and engaging narratives. Read poetry and news articles. Read joke books and recipes.
    Let them see you read.
Another thing is to allow children to get “bored” and then make it easier to pick up a book than a remote or an electronic device.

      @TheSaltwaterwoman 4 місяці тому +2

I agree with all this but Also games with narratives have play a big rule in helping my children and many want to read more also.
son especially when learning years ago to play Minecraft. That manual is thick lol He also has the whole halo series. I mean sometimes we can lead a horse to water but we can't force them to do anything well, on their own if they don't want it and it will feel like a feeding tube at times if we don't find something that's appropriate but also something they personally enjoy. In this world at times the balance is hard to find- not many really conservative videos games but they do work, because real enjoyment increase cognitions xxxx

My son was not a reader. He still isn’t. In fact when his youngest son has to read for 30 minutes for homework, after 15 minutes, he says that’s good!

Susan, I totally hear you about your mum! My father was the disciplinarian in our home (7 girls & 2 boys) as a teenager with raging hormones I sassed my mother one day, and she slapped me too! I was mortified! I was so mortified that I had that I had made my mother so angry to do that, I was harder on myself than she or dad ever was about it. It only happened ONCE... (my sass & her slap) I didnt do it again, not because I didnt want to be slapped, I didnt do it again, because I never wanted to dissapoint them again. They were wonderful parents. It was uncalled for on my part, an apology, forgiveness and forgotten on both sides. Lesson WELL learned. ❤

not enen through this vlog yet, but have to comment. The biggest issue I had raising 5 kids, was not having a partner on the same page. Frommy kids youngest years, I would try to engage my husband (now and EX) to back me up on the kids disrespect for both myself and each other. He never would-"it's boys being boys" was the response I always got. By the time they were young adults it was out of control and unbearable being abused by my own boys. Needless to say, the marriage didnt last and I know the disrespect still affects my relationships with my kids today. So bottom line-spouses must be on the same page-get counselling for the issue early if necessary!

As a grandmother of 22 and counting LOL, I love to read to anyone who will listen. My almost 3 year old, is difficult to slow down to read to, but her sister who is 1.5, gives me her Children's Bible as soon as I arrive in their home. I am there 5 days a week and I read them a Bible Story Daily. The younger one, sits and turns pages for 20 minutes a day and both love singing Kids Bible songs to end our day. Mom is happy since the both nap well LOL.. You both are great.

😅The first time I read the Bible through in a year, I found it burdensome, so I read it through more slowly and lingered over some parts but not others, and took at least two years. Next I read it chronologically (not in a year). Then, I read it aloud, chronologically, to my husband, explaining some as we went along as he had never had Bible study. I now do an evening devotional with him where he reads the Bible passage aloud and I read the devotionals.

Such a good video! Many of your tips about kids work for adults, too. Like me! (Single, no kids) I was a "chain reader" all my life....until a 12 hour surgery. The anesthesia interfered with concentration, then I became a smart phone user and I read even less (except on my phone). Solution: designated no screens times. Shut everything off, put the phone in a different room and READ! Thanks Sarah! I also love to see your warm relationship with your Mom. I had the same with my Mom who has passed. 💕

To @onlyjobros, Did-does on that! I think it is therapeutic to watch wholesome healthy families on youtuube. I even think that families like this are being an example to young people in troubled homes to show them what family is suppose to be so they can grow up and break the distinction and heal. When I was a kid that is what the tv show The Waiting was for me. The only people I have meet that liked that show came from troubled families. I so often think this families' channel, Tribe of Many, is helping so many young people in many ways we can't even imagine the numbers. My prayers are with them.

I grew up with that you respect your elders and that is it. Yes I tried to get away with things, but my mom and dad would nip it in the but right away. And I learned to just do what my parents said. Was harder as. Got older. Now I understand it as an adult. Still respect my elders. Hard now, see kids now days don’t respect elder, and it’s sad.

Love these ask Sarah's with your mum. It's so great to hear the answers from two generations! I wish I had a relation with my mom like that. I laid the Bible on my table to read for my coming years of morning coffee. What a great idea to start my day! Front to cover. And I also want to say how I love you don't say the name of the child you are referring to when it could be considered negative. That is the ultimate respect, and you do it fluent. It gets me into tears every time.

It’s funny when you talk about respectful conversations and my own memories of my teens. I was at boarding school a lot of time. I remember being sulky and angry for no reason, looking back likely my hormones and feeling not heard or respected in my home. But at the time I didn’t know what I was feeling at all except angry, I didn’t know why. Now I help teach my 4 year old niece about her emotions and they are perfectly fine. Where I wasn’t raised to think emotions were ok.

Me too 😔 as a kid I didn't want to be disrespectful and actually felt a lot of shame about being that way, but with hormones and a turbulent household it would just come out of me, I didn't know what was happening

I have a boy that doesn't like to read and I have a Girl that can't get enough of reading. When our daughter would get in trouble and sent to her room. I didn't catch on why she was happy. slow but sure... because she didn't see it has a punishment because she would just lay in bed and read... So I had to add on and you can't read. Then she felt the punishment and thought about why she was in her room... she's adult now and still loves to read. I love to read. I enjoy when your Mom comes. Prayer for your Grand Mother's move I miss seeing her also.

Loved this discussion. I hope many learned from this. Disciplining kids on any level is a lost art now days, and unfortunately some really disrespectful kids being raised now days. It's very disheartening.
