I hope Maryland and New Mexico are the top two spots. Maryland's flag is AMAZING, with two really cool heraldry patterns--that of the Calvert family and the Crosslands family--who were the two families that comprised the ancestors of Cecil Calvert, 2nd Lord Baltimore. He was the founder of the Maryland colony back in the 1630s. There are now four important jurisdictions in Maryland named in honor of him--the city of Baltimore, Baltimore County, Calvert County and Cecil County. New Mexico's flag is also quite unique, as the red sun symbol in its yellow field commemorates the Navajo and Pueblo nations who used to inhabit almost the whole state.
I can't nail down why, but your commentary always puts me in stitches!! Well done! That said, on behalf of Colorado, I'd like to thank you for the #3 spot! Again, great commentary! I personally think ours is better than NM, but fair opinion.
(Maryland) “..it’s probably the only flag that should come with an epilepsy warning and hurts your eyes when you look at it closely...”. Then immediately cuts to a close up to prove the point! 🤪
Maryland flag is the best flag, he’s crazy. There’s a reason we put that shit on everything. Whatever doesn’t get Old Bay on it gets the flag. And some things get both.
Being from Alaska, I'm super excited that it made the top 10. The story of the flag is really neat and it always makes me smile to think that one of the best state flags was designed by a 13 year old. Thank you Benny Benson!
I agree; the dark blue field is a nice touch; Polaris, The "Norrh Star", is a symbol, and a Direction; "North", and "Up"; while The "Big Dipper", represents the most visible stars, in Ursa Major, "The Great Bear"; and a good symbol for Alaska, "Land of The Great Bear". The "Pointer Stars", also "point, North". Simple, but says, a lot.
The Alaska flag is rad! I like the flags with constellations: New Zealand and Australia. A lot of flags feature stars and many have the sun or moon. I like the Argentina and Uruguay sun, which has a face, hehe. A lot of flags that feature moons refer to Islam. South Carolina features a moon. One of my top three state flags (with Alaska and New Mexico) I don't know if there are other flags with moons not referring to Islam
I think the Ohio flag is probably my favorite design - and I'm not even from the state. Maryland's flag is also a nice design, but it looks a bit like a Rorschach test or optical illusion. California, Colorado, Texas and Wyoming are also very nice. The states which feature their seals are a toss-up and really look like something from a courtroom. And yeah, 'Bama has the worst-looking flag.
(2 Years Later) I Don't think Alabama has the worst flag. Its simple and follows good flag design. Its so easy that a child can draw it from memory and its recognizable from a far distance. In my opinion and point of view the worst state flag is oklahoma
The Arizona flag looks so beautiful flying underneath the United States flag. I agree with your list 90%. I still think Arizona’s flag and Maryland’s flag are nicer than New Mexico’s. I think New Mexico should have a thin matching red border to break up some of that yellow and then it would be pretty cool. Maybe a thin red border but not at the edge just so that the edge was still yellow but the red border was like a smaller rectangle within the flag.
I'm legit surprised you didn't mention that Marylanders often wear shirts and shorts of the flag. It's the only state flag I've seen wore as clothing on the reg. That state is REALLY proud of their flag.
How is the “classyness” of Maryland’s flag questionable? It’s based off of the coat of arms of Lord Baltimore. Idk how you can get more classy than that lmao
As a Mainer, I regret that we did not stick with our original flag design: a green pine tree in the center and a blue star in the upper corner. That was Maine's flag from 1902 - 1909. I have to agree that the subsequent... and current... design is just boring.
Yes! The Land of Enchantment! Born in Ohio but raised in NM those have always been my 2 favorite flags. Until this video I never realised just how many truly ugly flags there are! Lol
In 4th grade I learnt the meaning behind it, it's basically meant to represent the Release of Virginia from the Tyranny of the British Empire, and it was never made to represent murder it's just a defeated tyrant with a roman Virtue representing Virginia standing triumphant atop of them.
You can't put deep orange with some of the other colours on Arizona's flag, it clashes horribly. However, I think the New Mexico one's cute; looks like a little flower!
#3! I'll take it. You're right about pride for your state's flag, and that's exactly how I feel every time I see my beloved home's flag flying on the breeze.
Re: Arizona, the copper star represents the copper industry. The 5 points on the star represents 5 attributes of Arizona, copper, climate, citrus cotton and cattle.
Do not put lettering or seals on your flag. It’s hard to read from a far distance and hard to sew even. That’s why most of the US state flags have horrible designs.
As a big fan of vexillology, a lot of the ones you put down low are actually great flags. Alabama's is an excellent design if you're basing it off the principles of flag design.
Your correct but the funny thing is while the design itself is not meant to represent the confederacy the fourth star inside the diamond the one above the word Arkansas is actually meant to represent the confederacy as it was added to the flag in may of 1861 when we seceded from the union.
I am an Aussie and remember seeing South Carolina's flag last year and mentioning how much I liked it. I also was surprised as I would have always thought Florida when I saw a palmetto? It is still my fave of all though .
I live in South Carolina and I can tell you that Palmetto trees and Palm trees are different. Palmettos grow to be a max height of 30 feet and Palm trees to 80 feet.
I'm from SC but just moved to VA. I see at least a dozen cars a day with the SC palmetto stickers and have met multiple people wearing clothing with the palmetto. I ask what part of SC they're from and they just say they like the look. It's really bizarre! I would never wear another state's flag or put it on my car just because it looks nice!
Woo-hoo! from NM. I was holding my breath until you got to AZ -- then I knew we had come in first. That symbol is called a Zia sun, because it was apparently the sun symbol of the Zia pueblo whose land is just northwest of Albuquerque. Sounds silly, but the unique flag was one of the many reasons I moved here a decade ago.

I'm definitely biased for the California Flag since I've lived in this state most of my life and for the last 19 years have lived half a mile from where the Bear Flag Revolt occurred when the flag was first raised (Sonoma, CA).
Hawai'i is illegally occupied by the USA, they never seceded their sovereignty. The USA will never get rid of the Union Jack on Hawai'i because they know they can't. Which is ironic because the original 13 colonies fought to not have that in any capacity.
It is even worse than that. Hawai’i used to be a sovereign kingdom, and its now (degraded) national flag is precisely from that era. Gunboat diplomacy at its best. Hawaiian natives eventually became foreigners in their own archipelago, and their political power was erased by merely packing the islands with people from outside Hawaii. So the mere fact that their flag is being derided because of its history is asinine.
You forgot the reverse side of Oregon's flag, the beaver! Yes, the seal is lame, but two different sides is cool. The beaver is rad, Oregon should just update it to the beaver for both sides.
Maryland is my favorite in that it’s a throw back to the Baron of Baltimore. Like it has a very regal view.
I can't nail down why, but your commentary always puts me in stitches!! Well done!
That said, on behalf of Colorado, I'd like to thank you for the #3 spot! Again, great commentary! I personally think ours is better than NM, but fair opinion.
Thank you! I'm glad you like the videos
Agreed, our flag is better than NM's
Nah, I Personally Think That New Mexico Deserves It’s Spot Because Of How The Symbol Ties Into Our Heritage :)
I know our green chile is better though.
(Maryland) “..it’s probably the only flag that should come with an epilepsy warning and hurts your eyes when you look at it closely...”. Then immediately cuts to a close up to prove the point! 🤪
And yet is somehow still ranked in the top 5...?!
Maryland flag is the best flag, he’s crazy. There’s a reason we put that shit on everything. Whatever doesn’t get Old Bay on it gets the flag. And some things get both.
But can we agree the Maryland borders are the biggest eyesore?
On Earth?
@Austin Martín Hernández Mumbo Mumbo Mumbo AFK...
Notice how the top 3 were all from the 4 corners?
Yeah, I live there
Too bad utah didnt make it :(
Maybe 4 corners influenced their designs, competing, flying so close together at the survey marker.
Being from Alaska, I'm super excited that it made the top 10. The story of the flag is really neat and it always makes me smile to think that one of the best state flags was designed by a 13 year old. Thank you Benny Benson!
I’m from AK too :)
@@rodrudinger9902 Slaves escaping on the Underground Railway were told: "Follow the Drinking Gourd" (The Big Dipper). One more thing to be proud of.
Great idea!!!
Y'all all crazy. Maryland flag is so ugly i cant stand it. But other than that, yeah Arizona's is probably the prettiest.
Arizona seems like an eyesore personally. The orange in the center clashes weirdly with the red and blue

I'm legit surprised you didn't mention that Marylanders often wear shirts and shorts of the flag. It's the only state flag I've seen wore as clothing on the reg. That state is REALLY proud of their flag.
AZ and HI too.
You obviously have never been to New Mexico where the Zia is used on practically EVERY business logo and SO many different clothing items and tattoos.
Not to mention the University of Maryland's hand-painted, Flag Design Football Helmet
Colorado too! I've seen everything from shirts to mugs to tattoos.
I live in Northern Virginia and must admit to a secret envy of the flag of our northern border state. It’s cool.
How is the “classyness” of Maryland’s flag questionable? It’s based off of the coat of arms of Lord Baltimore. Idk how you can get more classy than that lmao
I agree that New Mexico's flag is good-looking with it's simplicity, but my favorite would have to be the California Republic flag.
Despite how much I dislike California, I'm gonna have to agree with you on that.
As a Mainer, I regret that we did not stick with our original flag design: a green pine tree in the center and a blue star in the upper corner. That was Maine's flag from 1902 - 1909. I have to agree that the subsequent... and current... design is just boring.
I’m from Maine too, and I agree with you. That older design is sweet, and our current flag looks pretty generic.
Yeah the old one is nice and simple meanwhile to modern one looks ugly
100% agree with New Mexico. Gorgeous.
Oregon’s Flag is actually the only one that has a different image on the back

Glad Mississippi recently changed its flag. I found the new one cool - unique, simple, easy to identify from the distance.
The old one just had to go. The new one with the magnolia was a good "soft landing". Imagine what they could have come up with.

I went to Virgina public school and looked at the Virginia flag everyday and no one ever called out that it had a murder depicted on it 😂
In 4th grade I learnt the meaning behind it, it's basically meant to represent the Release of Virginia from the Tyranny of the British Empire, and it was never made to represent murder it's just a defeated tyrant with a roman Virtue representing Virginia standing triumphant atop of them.

And besides, the lettering will be backwards on the reverse side of the flag.
Ohio has the only flag that is a pennant: “Maryland has the most identifiable flag in the country....” 😒
Correction: it is a burgee shape. Pennants come to a single point.
And he wasnt lying ...tell me you wouldnt notice The Maryland Flag from a distance ...
As a big fan of vexillology, a lot of the ones you put down low are actually great flags. Alabama's is an excellent design if you're basing it off the principles of flag design.
The Arkansas flag is not based on the Confederate Flag. It has 25 stars because it was the 25th state and the other four are important to its history.

This is the way to present one's opinion! Straight forward with rational explanation and lot of humor. Love it!
Woo-hoo!

The Alabama flag literally follows every rule of vexillology for what constitutes a good flag. It should be in the top 5, as only about 5 follow every rule.
States: Have a piece of cloth for boring government offices.
Kyle: “And I took that personally.”
The stars on the TN flag represent the three parts of the state, sadly just missed the top ten.
In Oregon’s defense, we have the only two-sided flag (that should count for something).
I might too much, but I gave this video a dislike for doing that
During the civil war Alabama had a two side flag but they changed it after
WV technically has a reverse side but its never used
The fact that Oregon has a two-sided flag doesn’t improve it at all. It is still (in my opinion) one of the worst state flags.

Wyoming's flag is cool and should have easily made the top 10.
Gotta stand up for the Hawaiʻi flag. I guess you gotta be local to appreciate it.
Mississippi changed their flag, and it looks a whole lot better than their old one.
As someone who has lived in Nebraska literally all my life, I'm amazed our flag beat out 3 others.
In defense of Hawaii, many native hawaiian didn't want to be part of the us, as the us overthrown and annex their kingdom.
Rhode Island is awesome because it's a square. Great design. Ohio's shape is great, too. Alaska's might be the best. So cool. I adore Maryland's flag. I own the Colorado flag (my birth state) and I love flying it. I love the design. New Mexico is perfect. Yup. I can agree with that.
An updated video is needed. Mississippi has a new flag. Even my mom, wholeheartedly against the flag change in Mississippi (we all have moms...), agreed that the magnolia flag they replaced it with is very attractive.
That is nice. The pics I saw all had the old Confederate design. This new one is quite good.
And now Utah's changing their flag, making all of the 4-Corner states solid.
I think you gave Indiana's welcome sign too much credit, but also think you underestimated our state flag. I feel it is top 10 based on some of the other options.
