It's a good radio station. I've gotten better at turning it off before recording to prevent UA-cam from getting upset :-)

Kiaora, from Oz. Its great that you are putting out informative videos, but my Aspergers is forcing me to have to point out a couple mistakes. The square notch in the chip breaker that sits over the little nub is not attached to the pivot lever. it is a tiny lever that is attached to the adjustment knob that adjusts the depth of the blade sticking out of the mouth of the plane. The pivot lever engages by sitting in the slot in the middle of the plane blade itself when it is placed down on the frog. Also, when you were sliding that block over the plane after you had "adjusted" it, had me Cringing. That has nothing to do with adjusting the plane, all that does is tell you that the blade is protruding from the mouth. If you want to know the best way to setup your plane, i would suggest checking out "Rob Cosman" and his latest video. I haven't come across anyone that explains things more clearly and simply when it comes to hand planes.
Lastly, if you plan on putting that old jointer plane back into service, it might be wise to reflatten the sole. Because it is wood, depending on how much it was used in the past it might need some TLC to bring it back into spec. Otherwise, great video, keep it up.

Thanks for the encouragement Paul and the advice. I'll take a look at that video you mention. The block trick I picked up from somewhere and you are right, but it also serves as a very tactile way to confirm (or not) that the blade is set up correctly, sadly my mk1 eyeball is not yet up to the job :-) Your observation on the what that square nub is - ta!

Oh my goodness.. I've just noticed the number of subscribers and views!
I am very surprised, I like your content and if you are hoping for more viewers I think you deserve them an I wish you luck.. but perhaps you just enjoy the process.
I have a sharpening suggestion for you. On your sharpening station if you re-made it you could include a piece between you and the stones, the same thickness as the stones, that allows you to run the guide back behind the stone allowing you to use much more of the length of the stone, greatly speeding up the sharpening and helping to keep the wear on the stone more even. might not matter so much on the diamond stones but they too wear out. Using this arrangement myself, when I don't I find it incredibly frustrating! :)

Good suggestion, I can see remaking it at some point, probably when replacing those diamond stones. Thinking aloud, will perhaps router the next version down the depth of the diamond stone to create a flat surface, should do the trick :-)
Thanks for the encouragement. You are right, I'm very much enjoying the process.

I clicked on this video thinking that you'd be setting up a sharpening station for the large blade of the jointer plane. I'm very disappointed that I got suckered in by a misleading thumbnail. Those old plane blades need a different process to get them sharp and I was hoping to learn something. Instead, I got a rehash of a sharpening video I've seen from at least 2 dozen other content creators.

@@MattProject The large blades don't fit in the blade holder. At least, not mine. It's also too wide for my diamond stones. I was kinda hoping you thought of a jig to run the blade side to side not back and forth.

I'll check mine tonight, ta for the heads up :-) I'll let you know here what I find, my gut tells me I'll be ok, but I clearly need to check!

I've checked and the blade in my plane fits both my sharpening jig (blade holder) and my diamond stones. It's 2 1/2" wide, perhaps your's might be wider? It doesn't fit my water or oil stones though, but if needed I can pick up a coarse diamond stone for the initial grind. I'll pop up some footage over the weekend so you can see and I'll dig out links to where I got both the jig and diamond stones from. Hope this helps?

@@MattProjectThanx. I don't want to take time away from your project, so if/when you get around to sharpening the jointer blade with the camera nearby, it would be great to see how you do it. In the meantime, I'll keep looking. Are you making a full-scale replica or something smaller? Good luck with your project.
