    If I remember correctly, Pat mentioned on Legends of Wrestling that Ali originally was going to be the actual ref. But once they met him in person to start going over things, that's when they realized he was already mentally fading and wouldn't be able to do it. So they made him the enforcer, and Pat stepped in. Which had the bonus of helping Mr. T along.
    Ali was apparently so gone that he was really trying to get into it with Piper during the match.

    • @SalsBrain
      @SalsBrain Рік тому +7

      From what I have read it really isn't far fetched. He was stretched thin trying to beat everyone all at once. It wasn't WrestleMania alone that would bankrupt him, it was everything going on at that time. It was big roster, multiple spot shows per night, buying TV time slots, doing WrestleMania, getting the celebrities, plus a bunch more stuff. If Crockett was paying a million for one areas TV imagine what he was paying to get TV spots around the country and buying out the people who accepted it or matching/ beating what they were paying. The 80s were much different for wrestling than after the late 90s until now.

    I mean they're always gonna embellish the truth. WWE truly does control their own narrative. However Hogan was an attraction like no other those early years. Over like crazy here in NYC. Every kid in my neighborhood talked WWF. By WrestleMania 3 his hype was truly on a league of his own. It made me rent the coliseum video tape at 4 just seeing him and Andre staring on that cover like two wild men. Savage and Steamboat blew my mind and it kept me as a fan all the way until 2002. The first 8 WrestleManias really felt magical on a level no others until 13 - 19 did again.

    According to Roddy Piper's book from a few years ago, Mr. T almost single-handedly derailed the first Wrestlemania. Apparently Mr. T showed up at MSG with an entourage and got pissed when they wouldn't let the entourage into the locker room and wasn't going to do the match. Hogan had to talk to him and calm him down to get Mr. T to do the match.
    Piper also said in his book that during the build up for the match, when he smashed the record over Captain Lou Albano's head. Vince wanted him to really kick Cyndi Lauper in the head. Vince thought it would be great heat. Piper wouldn't do it because he knew that if he did, he would never get out of the arena alive not to mention that he would have either gone to jail or been sued for everything he had.

    Brian's point about the blue collar fan being pushed out of attending shows is a good one. But it's policies of New York that has routinely done that.
    Instead of seeing big events as entertainment for the masses, they see them as an opportunity to pillage tax money.
    Also, Mr. T had been getting harassed by Dr. D David Schultz (which is the real reason ge was fired) and Piper because they were jealous of his pay. A tale as old as time.

    When Beefcake appeared on the show I said “oh Brutus, what happened?” and my ten year old son said “He’s really let himself go.” I give Brutus a pass though. He did have that accident that almost killed him, and for all practical purposes ended his career, in 1990 so I don’t think we should judge his appearance to harshly. A near death experience is bound to impact how you’re going to look as you age.

Once Vince was able to get his product/roster to be involved with mainstream pop culture outlets, it didn't matter if JCP (or anyone else) was doing comprable business among the wrestling fans, because when the broader general public thought of pro wrestling at that point, they were thinking of WWE and the WWE talent.

Look at Connor and Mayweather. Imagine is everything. The worst worker The warrior made so much for WWE he was larger than life. The pro wrestling draft pool sucks. It's bad when Jade Cargill looks better than more than half of your male wrestlers. GO TO THE DAMN GYM! NBA, NFL, MLB take the best of the best to compete in their respective environments.
