Another good prospect to add to the Habs cupboard, and might I add, another thank you to Trevor Timmins' selections (I like to give credit where credit is due.). I do wonder however if either Beck or Kapanen may be sacrificed (maybe not now but in the future in a deal for a bigger fish) as they both are extremely similar players...let the battle begin! As we creep closer to the 2024 Draft, the more intrigue continues to build...and I'm loving it! I am convinced Hughes wishes to bring in a proven Top 6 forward but it takes 2 to tango so if none can be had for the right price, expect to see Plan A go to Plan B, then Plan C. I think in my perfect scenario, Mtl comes out of the draft with a core player @ #5, somehow is able to move up from #26 to get another good prospect to fill a need in the organization...as for the rest, remember, not everything on the Mtl off-season wish list needs to be completed at the draft...so I expect trades but probably more likely minor ones to help prepare Laval with some experience for all the new guys coming in. But don't get me wrong, I hope Hughes can surprise us all by pulling off a surprise major trade. Also side note, my heart hopes Aatos Koivu gets selected by Mtl (as long as he would like to come to Mtl or he may wish less microscopic stressful attention elsewhere which I would completely understand.). Will Mtl be busy July 1 for the UFA market? They will not "go for it" just yet...the 2025 UFA class looks way more appealing...but I do expect at least a few non-expensive additions to help round out our roster short term needs (size, grittier, PK assistance, and continue to add depth esp in Laval...and as much as I like Pezetta, maybe an upgrade to help protect all our present and incoming young guys and give Arber time to concentrate on improving his game and not always being the guy expected to fight).
I may have heard wrong, but his entry level contract I think, if he doesn't make the Habs out of training camp, that he goes back to Europe and not down to Laval. Depending on what they do with Dvorak, I could see Kapanen with the Habs. If they trade Dvorak over the summer, Kapanen or Evans steps into that 3C spot, Beck plays most of the year in Laval. Come trade deadline, they trade Evans for picks, and call up Beck to take his place. Mind you that could all have a wrench thrown into if if they decide to keep Newhook at C, which would likely be the 3C spot, assuming Dach is good to go. Having said that, I have no issues playing Cs on the wing
Hey Drew, nice to see you back in the studio. Would you be able to tell if that brand new ELC cancels the contract he's signed with Timra IK ? Or if he still has this option should he be deemed not fully ready yet out of summer camp ? I don't see a clear open spot for him now as the UFA market this year is so rich in decent Centers on small-ish contracts, it makes guys like Evans & Dvorak harder to move outside of package deals around draft time. And it's unlikely there will be several of those. If he still has that option it will be interesting to see what the management decides after camp, wouldn't be bad for him to go to SHL which is a lil'notch above the Liiga in speed, intensity & physicality + Timra is a fairly good team with limited means trying to cement itself as a playoff contender, good challenge, but off course going to Laval instead he'd get to experience a massive jump in numbers of games played per month and would be available to a call up much sooner to get a taste of the real thing. Both would be equally good to his dev as long as he gets to play big minutes either way and take part in the special units.
owen beck is gonna be good... i cant wait to see the habs after we get rid of a few guys like savard, armia, devorak, gallagher, harris ..... bringing in the guys like mayou , beck , roy
I think armia the last 2 months was really solid, if he stays like that all year long I'd keep armia, he's hard to knock off the puck and skilled , 6 foot 3 and sturdy
The senators have express that their pick might be available. Knowing the lack of offensive support on their D squad, knowing they want to be competitive sooner than later, maybe the habs could offer the 26th pick along matheson and something else... to get their hands on the 7th pick.. if I was Hughes I'd be willing to go pretty high knowing I can spare a top d and even include a solid project to get my hand on 2 of demidov iginla eiserman lindstrom silayev and levshunov... At the end of the day Hughes can spare any of the following: 26th pick, 57th pick, Matheson, savard, kovacevic, Harris, strubble, barron, armia,RHP, gallagher, anderson, beck and kapanen... matheson + 26th vs 7th seems like a fair starting point. Buteven if you go overboard and say let's give a haul to Ottawa, the habs offer matheson the 26th 2024 cgy 2025th kapanen and Harris... ud still be getting a top prospect potential top tier in exchange of matheson and expandable parts... ud even solve the crowded D problem ...
Matheson still has a good 5 years as a 50+ point elite skating defenceman. No need to trade him for a guy that could maybe do that 5 years down the line
i gotta tell ya , your rite about the last bit of games, but armia has been in the league what 10 years? & he has underperformed every year & is getting payed pretty well... not physical enough & doesn't play hard at all
