This opera is just FANTASTIC. What a tremendous role for a Dramatic Coloratura Soprano! Joan is just outstanding in this very difficult role.
Only when a singer like Joan Sutherland comes along. Which is once in several Centuries!

Of all her Bellini assumptions for me this was the greatest. A great vehicle for a prima donna assoluta. She only sang it early in her international career in Milan and Naples. In concert for her New York debut with Horne also. The Act I cavatina is absolutely sublime.

Cet opéra entre Norma et I Puritani est musicalement magnifique et parfaitement servi par le couple bellinien. Filippo est également bien interprété par ce baryton canadien, d'origine scandinave, que j'avais le tort de ne pas connaître.

Easily the best music in the opera is the trio 'Angiol di Pace' and it's gorgeously sung here. Pavarotti is starting his international career, and the voice is gleaming and effortless. After all the circus of his later career, it's good to remember how completely he deserved his fame - voice, technique and instinctive musicianship were there in spades. Certainly one of the ten greatest tenors of the 20th century. Possibly one of the five. . . .
