Unbelievable bravura and virtuosity! The ease, the musicality, the impeccable rhythm and energy in the singing, the elegiac phrasing, the power and authority without never losing control nor beauty, it's all nearly flawless here. :-o

She was a living lullaby. Thank you for it all, Joan - every note, every moment

When Sutherland trills like that, you know something even greater is up next! She never disappoints and with Dame Sutherland you always had faith in that voice/support....When I think of cabaletta I think of Sutherland

Where and when was this incredible performance. Joan at her most thrilling voice and they don’t come any better than that.

Divine trill at 5:21. This is the pure Sutherland voice, fresh, dynamic and with perfect legato.

We went to Beatrice in Paris tonight. We then came back to our hotel and needed to hear it sung as it should be. Thank you again for all your posts. 🙏❤️

Dans ce rôle , Sutherland est de loin la meilleure .La cabalette finale est étourdissante de virtuosité , agilité et technique .C'est superlatif ,un feu d'artifice vocal incomparable .

If you read the libretto, this scene will tear your heart out. THIS is how you approach an unjust death with dignity!

Anna Bolena does it with no less nobleness, and not just Donizetti‘s Anna Bolena, but the real Anne Boleyn as well

Bellissimo brano della Beatrice di Tenda, opera di V. Bellini che meriterebbe di essere più rappresentata!

I admire these bootleg recordings more than anything... You can hear from afar how the sound of the singer blends and rises above the orchestra... she is fantastic here... I dont think we will hear another Callas or Sutherland in our (my) times...

@Gav640 ... and really appropriate for such a talented composer as Bellini. But your talent for understatement hardly will be surpassed

Lohengrin O. You certainly are great at finding some real rarities which in Joan Sutherland’s case shine a completely new light on her unsurpassable bel canto singing. Do you know where and when this performance took place?

It is scary to think that excellent Bellini singing is such remote past now.

Does anyone know what aria she is singing here?

I'm sure I heard Marilyn Horne sing a phrase, which would make this the Carnegie Hall performance - the first time they sang together.

I heard the second time they sang together - opening night of the '63 Norma here in Vancouver.

Wow. She's just brought tears to my eyes. Really, really beautiful and emotional. The phrasing is just perfect. I agree with the comments here: her live bootleg recordings are incredible and her husband didn't quite extract the best from her. Her studio recordings are particularly boring. Here she's really shinning. It's incomparable! Brava! ❤👏

And yes! I also wish Callas hadn't gone to that yacht. Lol

Yes it’s interesting that Bonynge, though responsible for promoting her real talent, generally failed to induce the thrilling singing you hear on her live and early recordings with other conductors. One exception, however, is the live recording of Lucia from the ROH/London (1973) in which Joan is in incredibly fine voice even with her husband giving a somewhat underwhelming contribution as conductor.

Realmente estupenda.

What is … astonishing in the finale of Beatrice is how - to put it nicely - Verdi ‚lent‘ from that to use it for the finale of Traviata even for the same effect: an ominous note of the imminent final fate
