House of the Dragon: What Could Have Been Better (Festivus special)

Today we talk about our favorite Game of Thrones spinoff while paying homage to one of the great gimmick holidays of all time in Seinfeld, Festivus! We talk about some good things, but mostly bad things that happened during House of the Dragon season 1 pertaining to Rhaenyra, Viserys, Daemon, Alicent, Otto, Aegon, etc.

Honestly, House Velaryon got the short end of the stick. They deserved better and more . As well of the actors for House Velaryon.
House Velaryon got the major short end of the stick - no doubt. I mean Corlys looked good. Vaemond was cool except for the whole usurper part. Laenor was likable, but cuckolded. Laena was cool but died before we could spend any time. Baela & Rhaena are personality-less at the moment, but here's to hoping the future is much better...they certainly have a moment or two in the books I hope translate to the screen.
My only grievances are the relationships between characters not being explored more like daemon and laena harwin & rhaenerya I would’ve liked to see more from them there should’ve been an episode in between eps 5 & 6 and cut episode 9 down to 20 minutes and make that plot to make aegon ii king in the begin of the finale and the rest of the episode would’ve still worked with rhaenerya finding out and her getting crowned on dragon stone & Luke becoming a whopper meal
I think that's a very fair grievance, no doubt. The Harwin & Rhaenyra one is the relationship I wish we saw a little but more from, for certain. You just wish they could've added like 2 minutes to 2 episode just to display that.

Nobody wants to see some romance woman show. This is game of thrones not vampire diaries. We care about good plots and politics.

Happy holidays . HOD for the next season should take notes from GOT in its prime days and understand what makes secondary and tertiary characters interesting. Give them more time to shine. Committ to one timeline as opposed to relying on constant time jumps .

I agree with that - I like the idea of them being more consistent with timeline and focusing on some ancillary characters. It's going to be tough to focus on everyone in the family + others, but they must. They MUST!

As for my grievances, 1) Why do the older actors stay the same but they need full other ppl to play others??? Like Viserys is the only adult character at the start of the series that showed signs of aging. Like give Criston some grey or something.
2) I don't like how they changed Alicent to be more sympathetic and be the same age and best friend of Rhanerya. It makes it seem like she didn't really want it but in in the books she was driving force behind the decision. I liked that better rather than it being her having "no choice".
3) I wouldn't have minded another time jump if we got to see Rhanerya start her relationship with Harwin and Daemon to his second wife. She was interesting, daemons twin girls seem cool in the books.

What if topic idea, idk if it's been covered. But when Eddard had initially woke after his leg was shattered by fight with Jamie's guards Ned spoke with the Robert in the tower of the hand. After a heated conversation and Cersei being escorted back to her room Ned told Robert he needed to talk with him. Robert said it could wait until after his hunt the next day and Ned said hopefully he'd be gone back to winterfel by then, by his last order to him. Robert then forbade it and gave him back the hand of the king clasp. But what if he didn't, what if he allowed Ned to leave. Agreeing that King's landing and the politics was not for him. What would have changed?
I did actually covered this, I believe, where it was "What if Ned is Sent to The Wall"
Effectively I think it's the same outcome. You can check the vid out and let me know to see if you disagree with the outcome!
Seriously want to talk about characters who they should have fleshed out more. How about Harwin Strong.... him being the father of Rhaenerya's kids is a MASSIVE plot point. You would think there would be ONE scene where we see Rhaenerya and Harwin in love or in lust, why would she repeatedly risk her throne by bedding this man?

I prefer that HOTD doesn't have a clear cut good and bad side. It feels like it's Rhanera's story of a wronged woman who's quest for the iron throne destroys her.
I think that's a really solid take on the situation. It is fun not having a really solid good vs. bad like Starks vs. Lannisters (well, Lannisters vs. everyone)...but I happened to love the Lannisters, :-)
Hard disagree on not having a side to root for. Every series tends e that and it is soooo refreshing to see a more realistic portrayal of the brutaly of medieval politics

I like that they went a different direction, but I would've preferred a solid protagonist side to support!
Imo The best part of HOD is the sibling beef scenes btw daemon and king viserys . Great tension btw both actors. It’s a shame the shows writing separating them for a lot of the time.
I definitely co-sign that. I think Viserys/Daemon scenes were fantastic but I'm also just a huge fan of both of those guys so I'm not surprised scenes with them together make me really happy.
I feel like katheryn winnick ( tv show actress who played lagertha in the show Vikings would’ve been a better fit to play adult rhenarya. Great talent
I've never seen her before, but I'm willing to check her out to see if she really would be better! Emma is good, but I don't know - I really liked Milly so maybe I'm bias.

Another season. Season 1 is too compact.
I disagree about Emma I think she played Rhaenyra in a more grown up & mature way. Loved Milly but I think Emma plays her very well & she’s someone I can root for she’d be a better ruler than Aegon that’s for sure & so would Jace. She’s a better mother & more peaceful.
My biggest grievance was definitely Laena Velaryon & Harwin needed to be developed more. I also didn’t like how Criston Cole suffered no consequences for murdering Ser joffery at the welcome feast. & I didn’t like Daemon not saying anything after his daughters were punched in the face & bleeding! That doesn’t seem Daemon like especially after Jace said, “He attacked Baela!” & that Rhaenys bursting through the floor but not killing the greens to have a “girl boss” moment was lame & the thousands of pounds of concrete should’ve killed her 🤦🏾♀️ 😂
Hey Kevin. Merry, Merry. Laena is my minor grief, and the prophecy is my big one. They’re using it as a plot and character device and it just seems too vague and easy. They used it as an excuse for to make Alicent sympathetic in episodes 8 and 9 and for Daemon to choke Rhaenerya in 10. They used it to make Rhaenerya more measured in 10 while in the book, it was Daemon who urged caution. It may work out well, but I’m worried they’ll make both the women tragic figures throughout while making all the men the bad guys. That would be the absolute wrong approach. I don’t think they’re purposely going for that like some shows would do. And instinct tells me Ryan is too smart for that, but everyone has seen shows go off the rails after the 1st season.
They need to be really careful with Rhaenyra and Daemon. Not for me, lol. I’d be fine if he went out there and made people wet themselves when he walked into the room. Everyone is ragging on the shippers, but the show built this romance up from the very first episode. Even at the cost of his feelings for Laena, which I did not like, personally. Regardless, they have already hinted, heck said, Rhaenyra is going to be more (practical) about their relationship. To tell you the truth, that sounds kind of interesting. If they stay somewhat true to the book, the relationship is going sour anyway. But then, there wasn’t this great romance in the book like they basically set up in the show. Tricky. My point is that Daemon and Matt Smith are very popular. They screw him up or just backseat him, it’s not going to be pretty.
And in general, not enough character moments. They filmed them and then cut them out. I know they were under time constraints but I saw some editing choices that are haphazard.

We are in absolute accordance on everything. I want those things too. Despite my criticisms, I think Ryan really delivered. The cast and the acting were phenomenal. They spent the funds to go on location and built actual huge physical sets. The writing was mostly excellent. This is what allows representation to work. The story comes first and you treat your characters with respect. I have my niggles, as I’ve already mentioned. I’m still optimistic at this point. Ryan cares, and George is watching
@@vanessalore9942 Fully agreed. I think Ryan did a great job truthfully. Some criticism, but not too too much I think. It felt like I was back in the GOT universe and that's really all I want 🙂

I love this show, but it COMPLETELY neglected its secondary and tertiary characters.
I think it was a mistake to try and cover so much time in a single season. If I'd had my druthers, Season 1 would started with the Great Council, with Rhaenrya's oath scene being the finale
It could've done better, that's for sure. That isn't a bad way to do the show probably...the Great Council and its fallout could be done for a few episodes at least. No doubt.
Rhaenyra's oath did feel like the ending of a season rather than a premiere, I must admit!
The entire second half of the season (except for episode 10) could've been better.
I wonder if a lot of that is the newer actor’s interpretations of their characters. Everyone had some input. Let’s take Olivia for example. She seems to take not being liked really hard. She makes it sound like Alicent is a really tragic figure. They set up Alicent great in 5, using the entrance scene to the feast. And then they totally backtracked. In 9, she says the same thing to Larys and she does when Vicerys summons her in 4. “It’s quite late”I mean I don’t get it
