When I first heard this song, I attributed it to freedom, to being away from the things that restrain you from going to places you want to go, being who you want to be, and experiencing all the things you have never experienced before. I remember playing this song the time when I moved out of my parents' house. I was riding in a van on my way to a new city to start my first job. I was excited about the whole new experiences I was about to face, the notion of living alone, and the things I was leaving behind.

Sounds like a string synth, cheapest option would likely be the Korg EPS-1 or a vintage analog Casiotone (the MT-600 is my weapon of choice for ethereal synth sounds).
It sounds like it's a guitar processed through a whole bunch of reverb and delay. I could be wrong though. There is certainly a steel guitar in there too.
