We were going to play this in my youth symphony but now we can't because of unforeseen circumstances and it's such a beautiful piece :'( Even as a viola (who did not get the most exciting part in this piece), I was looking forward to it so much. Imagine being part of something this magnificent and powerful, I can't even describe how amazing it is, even just playing soft offbeats and the pizzicato part, it doesn't even matter in this piece- Words can't describe how much I love this music.

Cet orchestre est devenu une des quelques références d'excellence en Allemagne, grâce au talent incomparable des interprètes de chaque pupitre, grâce à la maîtrise de direction de ce chef et de quelques autres (titulaires ou invités) présents ou passés. The resonance of the violins is powerful, lyrical, with vibrant intensity! Yes, the question of the GODS is there. They, arguing as to how to settle the fate on HUMANITY... (Just my imagination, ha, ha...)
Deutschland nicht nur das Land der Dichter und Denker sondern auch der Musik. ( Wien war länger die Hauptstadt Deutschlands als Berlin ) Eine herrliche Musik, schade, dass Schubert so jung gestorben ist, was hätte er noch schaffen können.
Ich wünschte es gäbe mehr (junge) Leute, die die Schönheit klassischer Musik erkennen würden. Klar kann man dazu nicht im club tanzen, aber das soll man ja auch nicht :D Klassische Musik ist Kunst, während moderne Musik kaum mehr als unterhaltungsmedium ist (Gibt natürlich Ausnahmen).
Es ist das ewige Dilemma zwischen den Gesellschaftsschichten. Ich selbst habe inzwischen knapp die 40 überschritten und komme aus musikalischem Elternhaus, wo es Werte, Disziplin und Pflichten gab. Für mich ist Klassik (Musik und Kunst) und Kultur generell ein sehr wichtiges Element in meinem Leben, damit können aber erstaunlich wenige in meinem Alter etwas anfangen. Es ist mehr als bedauerlich!
Nun ich bin 17 und beschäftige mich mit allerhand geschichtete, Literatur, Oper, Klassik, Technik... Ich richtete mein bisheriges Leben komplett danach aus. so auch die Klassik... Und nun kommt das allegro assai: Ich habe weder eine hochschule besucht, noch ein Gymnasium .... Dies ist denke ich meinem (mit der Jugend heranbrechendem) Tourette Syndrom zu schulden... Ich ging nie "feiern" hatte bisher noch nie das glück, einer Sozialisation nachzugehen, von Mädchen weit gefehlt... Ich kann mit den heutigen Jugend "Konvention" und normen kaum etwas anfangen. Nunja ... Ihr Wunsch.... Nach mehr einsiecht und Begeisterung der Jugend, kann man denke ich schnell vergessen....Egal wo man nur hinsieht alle sprangen wohl auf den Zug der Moderne auf... Dies macht mich sehr traurig... Nunja man kann es nicht ändern. Ich versuche einfach das alte, so gut es geht zu wahren. Die moderne Musik, Kunst und alg. die Moderne finde ich sowieso nicht gut.... Alles zu schnell, maschinell, kalt und tot....Auch der Stil ging leider .... Nunja es kann ja alles noch werden.
Nun, ich denke, dass es wichtig ist einen Kompromiss zwischen Klassik und Moderne zu finden. Auf keinen Fall die Klassik vergessen, aber dennoch die Moderne weiterführen. Auch zu Zeiten, in denen die Kunstwerke aller Art, die wir nun als „klassisch“ bezeichnen, entstanden sind, gab es Lieder die nur der Unterhaltung dienen, genauso wie auch jetzt Musik geschaffen wird, die durchaus künstlerischen Anspruch hat. Indem man stets nur dem Vergangenem hinterhereifert kommt man nur zu Kopien von alten Künstlern, bestenfalls zu Collagen.
Ich bin 16 und mir gefällt hauptsächlich auch moderne Musik (elektronisches), jedoch gefällt es mir auch sehr, ab und zu mal wieder einem klassischen Werk zu lauschen.

I had never heard Classical music before, and these works revealed a universe of sound and feeling that had the effect of a religious conversion. This was my community; this was my culture, my people, and my language. Suddenly I knew where and among whom I belonged. ... I have never heard a performance of Schubert's Eighth Symphony that could equal the passion and artistry of the performance recorded by Columbia--I suppose, by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra--especially in the passages (for example, at about 19:00 here) in which the wind choir should be given prominence over the strings. None of the five or six performances I have heard here on UA-cam can match the Columbia recording that I heard so many years ago. But the one led by Eschenbach, although a little slow for my taste, is the best. I wish I knew who the conductor of the Columbia recording was.

Eschenbach is the most controversial of front rank conductors, sharply dividing critics. David Hurwitz habitually awards him 10 out of 10 for artistry, praising his unorthodox and probing interpretations. Yet, he is frequently criticized by critics and orchestral musicians, people who know something about music. To be fair, this performance of the best known Schubert symphony was competent and served the music well, certainly better than the youth or school orchestras' renditions mentioned by the other commentators. UA-cam is hardly neutral though, showing all the positive comments (in English, German, French, Spanish and Russian) first as top comments, giving you the impression that this is a widely-admired top international conductor, but as you read on, they become more and more negative. The first movement was slow and lethargic ("this is not Bruckner"). I think the second movement went well. Schubert's Unfinished tends to bring out the best in conductors; this is Eschenbach at his best, I suppose. In interviews, Maestro Eschenbach comes across as a nice and likeable person. He has the most illustrious resume - a pianist renowned for his Mozart and Schubert, that learnt the art of conducting from Szell and Karajan. Blessed are those who enjoy his interpretations; for the others, it can be a woeful experience.
Like some of Mozart's pieces, this piece is surly a piece of the composers soul. One of the finest pieces of music in my opinion; brief but greater than a Beethoven full symphony.
It makes me really sad to hear this now, while everybody is in quarantine, because we were playing this piece in orchestra before Covid but couldn‘t finish it. Yes, I know where this was. It was the long (2 centuries) secularized Kloster (monastery) Eberbach in the Rheingau area of Germany, not far to the west of Wiesbaden. It was in the huge basilica, with an echo factor one must hear to believe. JAT

Nun ich bin 17 und beschäftige mich mit allerhand geschichtete, Literatur, Oper, Klassik, Technik... Ich richtete mein bisheriges Leben komplett danach aus. so auch die Klassik... Und nun kommt das allegro assai: Ich habe weder eine hochschule besucht, noch ein Gymnasium .... Dies ist denke ich meinem (mit der Jugend heranbrechendem) Tourette Syndrom zu schulden... Ich ging nie "feiern" hatte bisher noch nie das glück, einer Sozialisation nachzugehen, von Mädchen weit gefehlt... Ich kann mit den heutigen Jugend "Konvention" und normen kaum etwas anfangen. Nunja ... Ihr Wunsch.... Nach mehr einsiecht und Begeisterung der Jugend, kann man denke ich schnell vergessen....Egal wo man nur hinsieht alle sprangen wohl auf den Zug der Moderne auf... Dies macht mich sehr traurig... Nunja man kann es nicht ändern. Ich versuche einfach das alte, so gut es geht zu wahren. Die moderne Musik, Kunst und alg. die Moderne finde ich sowieso nicht gut.... Alles zu schnell, maschinell, kalt und tot....Auch der Stil ging leider .... Nunja es kann ja alles noch werden.
Nun, ich denke, dass es wichtig ist einen Kompromiss zwischen Klassik und Moderne zu finden. Auf keinen Fall die Klassik vergessen, aber dennoch die Moderne weiterführen. Auch zu Zeiten, in denen die Kunstwerke aller Art, die wir nun als „klassisch“ bezeichnen, entstanden sind, gab es Lieder die nur der Unterhaltung dienen, genauso wie auch jetzt Musik geschaffen wird, die durchaus künstlerischen Anspruch hat. Indem man stets nur dem Vergangenem hinterhereifert kommt man nur zu Kopien von alten Künstlern, bestenfalls zu Collagen.
Ich bin 16 und mir gefällt hauptsächlich auch moderne Musik (elektronisches), jedoch gefällt es mir auch sehr, ab und zu mal wieder einem klassischen Werk zu lauschen.

When I was about 10 years old, my older brother joined the Columbia Record Club, and his first few records (elegant black vinyl, 33 RPM) were Classical orchestral works, one of which was Schubert's Eighth Symphony. I had never heard Classical music before, and these works revealed a universe of sound and feeling that had the effect of a religious conversion. This was my community; this was my culture, my people, and my language. Suddenly I knew where and among whom I belonged. ... I have never heard a performance of Schubert's Eighth Symphony that could equal the passion and artistry of the performance recorded by Columbia--I suppose, by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra--especially in the passages (for example, at about 19:00 here) in which the wind choir should be given prominence over the strings. None of the five or six performances I have heard here on UA-cam can match the Columbia recording that I heard so many years ago. But the one led by Eschenbach, although a little slow for my taste, is the best. I wish I knew who the conductor of the Columbia recording was.

De esta obra dice Wikipedia lo siguiente: "La Sinfonía en si menor, D 759 de Franz Schubert, fue compuesta en 1822 pero no fue descubierta hasta varios años después de la muerte del compositor. Se le atribuye clásicamente el nº8 pero en las numeraciones actuales es la nº7. El nombre de Inacabada o Inconclusa (en alemán Unvollendete) se debe a que solo consta de dos movimientos aunque nada demuestra que Schubert pensara hacer el resto, con lo que la obra estaría completa. Algunos musicólogos opinan que esta sinfonía anticipa la música de Anton Bruckner".

Eschenbach is the most controversial of front rank conductors, sharply dividing critics. David Hurwitz habitually awards him 10 out of 10 for artistry, praising his unorthodox and probing interpretations. Yet, he is frequently criticized by critics and orchestral musicians, people who know something about music. To be fair, this performance of the best known Schubert symphony was competent and served the music well, certainly better than the youth or school orchestras' renditions mentioned by the other commentators. UA-cam is hardly neutral though, showing all the positive comments (in English, German, French, Spanish and Russian) first as top comments, giving you the impression that this is a widely-admired top international conductor, but as you read on, they become more and more negative. The first movement was slow and lethargic ("this is not Bruckner"). I think the second movement went well. Schubert's Unfinished tends to bring out the best in conductors; this is Eschenbach at his best, I suppose. In interviews, Maestro Eschenbach comes across as a nice and likeable person. He has the most illustrious resume - a pianist renowned for his Mozart and Schubert, that learnt the art of conducting from Szell and Karajan. Blessed are those who enjoy his interpretations; for the others, it can be a woeful experience.

Like some of Mozart's pieces, this piece is surly a piece of the composers soul. One of the finest pieces of music in my opinion; brief but greater than a Beethoven full symphony.

It makes me really sad to hear this now, while everybody is in quarantine, because we were playing this piece in orchestra before Covid but couldn‘t finish it. Yes, I know where this was. It was the long (2 centuries) secularized Kloster (monastery) Eberbach in the Rheingau area of Germany, not far to the west of Wiesbaden. It was in the huge basilica, with an echo factor one must hear to believe. JAT
