I live in Philadelphia. A friend of mine said he saw the most beautiful woman with the most beautiful eyes on Sansom St. He later found out that’s where Eddie Fisher’s mother lived and it was Liz Taylor he saw, who was visiting her mother in law.
I have always loved this movie. It is a simple and beautiful story, well told and delivering a most valuable lesson in the appreciation of a hugely important and vital aspect of the human spirit - that to have dreams and hopes, though they may seem as total folly to others, is a potent driving force that potentially advances not only an individual, but all of mankind. Liz Taylor was a physically beautiful girl and grew into an even more beautiful woman. Her acting though, at such an early stage in her career, was rarely if ever bettered.
What a charmer! Stupendously beautiful, even as a child star, hard-working & best of all a brave &beautiful spirit & heart. There will never be anyone remotely like this stunning creature.

Movies and books can be such different creations. Sometimes I think it's a disadvantage to compare them. Hard to appreciate the movie at times when you've read the book and it is definitive for you.
Elizabeth Taylor in this movie inspired me as a young girl to become the horsewoman that I am today. She was an excellent rider in "National Velvet" My favorite Horse Movie of all time. I read that the studio gave Pie to her after the wrap.
This was the movie that made ELIZABETH TAYLOR a star.....but at a cost. I heard she fell off the horse and had a back injury. And this was at a time when medical science did not know how to treat such an injury.

Elizabeth should've played the grown-up Velvet in International Velvet but as I recall Liz wasn't signed in the MGM contract anymore. It would've been exciting if she played Velvet Brown once more :)
Great point! Yes. I've often referred to the character of Evie in 1999's The Mummy as a strong but feminine character. This movie is another great example.
You mean a strong female character doesn’t need short hair or look like a guy and kick 250 pound men in the air ? Or better yet be trans? No such this and feminine anymore to these shells. Disney is through the looking glass today. Strong female characters are worthless, strong characters that are female are forever memorable.
i always loved this movie and thought elizabeth taylor was so beautiful and such a great actress. she will be missed. may she rest in peace. great tribute to a wonderful lady.
This has always been one of my favorite MGM movies of all time. Saw it in 3rd grade and have been in love with it since. I can't believe how huge of an age difference there was between Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor during filming!!

Thank you!!! This made me cry to watch it, how moving, and how talented and beautiful Elizabeth Taylor was even as a child. I'm getting up early tomorrow morning just to watch National Velvet on Turner Classic Movies, 7:30 a.m. EST ,Sunday, April 10, 2011. I can't wait!
Surely most can remember they first time they saw elizabeth taylor just as well as where they were when the heard that JFK or lady diana died? I'm 50 and can remember watching this when I was a boy of around 9 years old and getting my first butterflies in my stomach feeling looking at a girl, all very innocent of course. Great video. Funny, Liz Taylor - the first shocker of the Golden Age Hollywood broke the hearts of men, changed men. But temptress Liz began her children's films "Lassie come back.... old good Hollywood
On this day in 1944 {December 14th} the Elizbeth Taylor/Mickey Rooney movie "National Velvet" had its world premier in New York City... It was nominated for five Academy Awards; and won two {'Best Film Editing' and 'Best Supporting Actress' for Anne Revere}... One of the movie's star, Arthur Treacher, passed away exactly 31 years later on Dec. 14th, 1975 at age 81... R.I.P. Mr. Treacher, Ms. Taylor {1932 - 2011}, and Mr. Rooney turned 92 years old this past September 23rd...
This was/is such a heart warming film and shot in color makes it even sweeter. My sisters also watched the tV series, I believe was called International Velvet.
No, there was a series called 'National Velvet'. "International Velvet' was a 'sequel' featuring Nanette Newman as the grown-up Velvet Brown, who took charge of her niece, played by Tatum O'Neal.
Non ho fatto in tempo a vederlo . E penso che se hanno cominciato da lì si vedranno tutti i suoi film. Ora che ho la mia età capisco che coraggio ha avuto da bambina. Gareggiare una gara seria Liz è Liz
correct me if i'm wrong but i think elizabeth was the only one who could ride that horse among the film crew which was given to her after filming the movie. the horse would not want anyone ride on his back but elizabeth tamed the horse

It's not this movie I wish for....it's for the American culture of the late 1940s I want to come back. America's true Golden Age. Our decline began shortly thereafter.
Your right I only realised after I typed up my comment but left it as was. The sequel would have been better if Elizabeth Taylor played the grown up. You get attached to an actor playing the character. At least I do. Thanks for the pick up. Someone read what I wrote wow.
I wonder if stretching her spine to grow taller for the role after having been told she was too short made her vulnerable to the back injury she sustained and which plagued her lifelong.
Yes I remember seeing her when I was only 10 and her eyes were the most beautiful I had ever seen

That's so sad.
Great movie .
she's so beautiful.... I love her eyes
She wasn't supposed to be beautiful. Enid Bagnold's Velvet was a plain child, and definitely had no budding bosom.

Maybe you would like to read the book it was based on, and you'll see how different it was.

great work, really nice! Always loved this movie.
Beautifully done, thank you.
Liz Taylor ❤ perfect actress.
Her jumping on horseback in this movie scares me. There’s a reason why nobody teaches you to jump like this anymore.
And it looks like she did the stunts herself.
The horse threw her and she broke her back. She recovered quickly however it led to chronic back pain later in life.
