  • As the ocean attracts great attention on environmental issues and resources as well as scientific and military tasks, the need for and use of underwater robotic systems has become more apparent. Underwater robotics represent a fast growing research area and promising industry as advanced technologies in various subsystems develop and potential application areas are explored. Great efforts have been made in developing autonomous underwater robots or vehicles (AUVs) to overcome challenging scientific and engineering problems caused by the unstructured and hazardous ocean environment. With the development of new materials, advanced computing and sensory technology, as well as theoretical advancements, R & D activities in the AUV community have increased.

00:14 ● Eelume underwater robot - Reshaping Underwater Operations
The Eelume is an autonomous underwater vehicle being developed by Eelume AS, in partnership with Kongsberg Maritime and Equinor.
The Eelume is primarily designed to inspect, maintain and repair subsea infrastructure, primarily for offshore drilling drilling installations.
It may also have military applications, including for mine countermeasures and undersea surveillance.
The Eelume is intended to be able to dive 500 meters beneath the surface.
The Eelume is designed to be either entirely autonomous, or capable of being controlled remotely by an operator. The Eelume is intended to be deployed permanently underwater, housed at subsea docking stations.

02:07 ● Subsea Shuttle: the world’s first drone to transport CO2
Subsea Shuttle is a concept for an autonomous 135-metre drone that could transport CO2 back to the reservoirs, supplementing the pipeline carrying CO2 from Kollsnes outside Bergen to the reservoir, in a safe, cost-effective way, without emissions. With a range of 300 km, it could also be used to transport CO2 to reservoirs where it is not financially viable to build a pipeline. The Equinor Subsea Shuttle could also be used to transport oil from offshore fields and to land or to the nearest oil pipeline, enabling even quite small fields some distance away from established infrastructure to be developed in the future.

03:42 ● Aquanaut - No vessel. No Tether. No Limits
Aquanaut is an unmanned underwater vehicle that can transform itself from a nimble submarine designed for long-distance cruising into a half-humanoid robot capable of carrying out complex manipulation tasks. It can inspect subsea oil and gas infrastructure, operate valves, and use tools.

06:15 ● Autonomous Subsea Inspection - Changing the Subsea Landscape
For subsea operations, IRM services have traditionally relied on vessel-based, remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) or diver deployment to maintain the integrity of subsea production assets.
The oil and gas industry is now at a pivotal point in its evolution and we are on the cusp of a transformation. Organisations across the sector face growing pressure to streamline their operations in order to enhance overall HSSE performance whilst still improving cost efficiency, reducing their carbon footprint and embracing the digitilisation evolution in the delivery of critical data.
Autonomous, or semi-autonomous 'pilot-in-the-loop' vehicles, can potentially be the resident eyes and ears on the seabed, reducing the need for a field support vessel to execute all IRM activities.

    09:30 ● Robot system SherpaUW
SherpaUW is a hybrid walking and driving exploration rover for subsea applications. The locomotive system consists of four legs with 5 active DoF each. Additionally, a 6 DoF manipulation arm is available. All joints of the legs and the manipulation arm are sealed against water.
The arm is pressure compensated, allowing the deployment in deep sea applications.
Possible areas of application include surveillance and maintenance for underwater infrastructures, exploration and resource utilization and research on maritime deep sea life.
SherpaUW’s hybrid crawler-design is intended to allow for extended long-term missions on the sea floor. SherpaUW is well suited for repeated and precise sampling operations, for example monitoring black smockers over a longer period of time.

Some say the underwater world is just as mystifying as studying deep space. 🙄

Cool stuff. But how many of these have been actually built? What’s the price?

It would be great to partner with these companies on a subsea mission on the moon Enceladus.

Who makes that camera and light that snakes out and can maneuvered from the ROV at the 9min mark?

Secure old nuclear submarines, leaking old ships from WW2 and garbage on the bottom of the sea. Thats great PR. How do you ensure a powersupply in the deep dark sea and I guess there is limited access to 5g... how do you communicate with these things?
