    Great locomotive! Rapido definitely have set the bar for future steam locomotives! One thing James missed in his review which I think is a MAJOR advancement for HO steam is the drive system. That fact that ALL the drive wheels are driven!!!

      @ovationpdh 5 років тому +2

      Yes having all the wheels driven is the best part of this model, and a wonderful way to solve one of the biggest problems with model steam locomotives.

    • @scottb8175
      @scottb8175 4 роки тому +2

      Agreed. Nice to see independent geared drive. Just like what works for diesel and electric models. Much smoother than relying on the side rods. Especially for sprung drivers. All steam models should be built that way. Also nice to see - working front coupler. I'd say it won't work well on less than 30" radius, though. Nothing against Rapido - the nature of large steam on a model railroad. Big locomotives need big curves....

    Very nice review of the Locomotive, James! Helluva model as well! Only thing is ... of the list price - almost $700.00 - it should come equipped with a smoke unit. Overall though, a very neat little Steam Locomotive!

    I bought the BC Rail 2860 variation, but unfortunately had to send it back as a few bugs cropped up in the first days of running. Thankfully, Rapido has outstanding customer service and they stand behind their product. For their first steam locomotive, I'm honestly impressed despite the problems I experienced.
    I plan to make a review of my own of this splendid model in the near future. Thanks and well done on another great video, James!

      What issues did you run into if you don't mind me asking?

    • @trainmaster844
      @trainmaster844 5 років тому +2

      @@amtraklover The issues I had were:
      - Boiler Shell Heating Up (I didn't want to fry the engine's electronics or motor, so I stopped as soon as I felt it)
      - Loss of slow-speed control (Even after using CV54 - which resets it - it didn't work; the driving wheels would get pause for a brief moment while in rotation)
      - Exhaust Chuffs out of sync.
      But again, I'm glad Rapido was willing to take it back and check it out.

    At 18:02 you must have hit F17 referred to as "Silly Sound". What you here is the Canadian National Anthem. I have another Rapido that plays the theme to the cartoon Hercules. My belief is that this is this is the result of Jason's sense of humour.

    Good review there! I fell like pointing out a thing or two; not to put down your review in any way, just one or two things I have yet to hear in video reviews about the loco and that I think other viewers might be interested to know.
    For one thing, it's actually got two separate speaker set-ups. You've got speakers in the tender for a louder sound, but you can flip a switch on the underside of the tender and the sound (albeit quieter due to technical limitations) will actually come out of the smokebox! How's that for prototypical? :P
    And to round out Rapido's inclusion of Easter Egg/Silly sounds, they also included a recording of King George VI giving a speech during his Canadian visit.
    One final thing, that I think few people in the Western Hemisphere know: the Royal Hudson is in fact Rapido's SECOND steam loco! Their first one is a British loco, the Stirling Single built for Locomotion Models.
    Again, good review, and hope you like yours as much as I'm liking mine!

    • @railvidoer

      it's a model of a CPR Hudson that pulled the Royal Train for the Royal visit to Canada in 1939 by Due to the fact the single CPR Hudson locomotive pulled the 12 car train 3,224 miles without a problem, King George VI allowed the H1c, d and e classes of CPR Hudsons to be called Royal Hudsons and to wear the crowns on their running boards. There was no Royal visit by Queen Elizabeth in 1958, it was in 1959 and Canadian National Railways and Canadian Pacific Railways split the duties of hauling the Royal Train which incidentally was all done with diesel-electric locomotives.

    All of the royal Hudson’s are I believe the only locomotives outside of Europe that has been given the “Royal” status after the cpr 2850 was painted royal blue and pulled I think a monarchs special train when the family toured Canada so that’s why no matter which one of the royal Hudson’s they have the clown on the running board

    I have been on a train pulled by One, 2860, I have seen CPR Empress (2816) in action in 2008 but my favorite loco of all time is the Canadian Pacific 2-10-4 Selkirk ... I just wish they had still working examples of the class. The sad part is they are so heavy they cannot operate west of Revelstoke BC. (Ok for their designed job of being Pushers based out of Field to push trains over the rogers pass) but it means that I would never be able to see one in person without travel even if there were working examples. My favorite Canadian locomotives, the CPR 4-6-4 and 4-8-4. I am torn what to do now to own one of the Hudsons. Do I buy one of these Hi-Tech plastic models? Wait for a good higher end old brass version and convert to DCC? Or spend a year to scratch build one to my specifications? Tough decision. One thing - CPR's 12 wheel tenders look odd to me without the locomotive attached due to the trucks extending past the end beams......

      0-9 is all you'll be able to do. If you're looking at Rapido-level motive power, do yourself a huge favour and get a better system. EZ Command is just holding you back-- it's the very bottom end of DCC. You'll be astounded at the difference even if you just pick up a used MRC Prodigy Express or Advanced..

      John Smith HO is still the most popular. I like american flyer the best for size and realism. O GAUGE TAKES TOO MUCH SPACE FOR MANY OF US WHO LIVE IN APARTMENTS OR SMALL HOUSES.
