Teaching kids gun safety critical!! Started shooting at 4 when my Dad built me my first single shot 22 rifle made from long nosed pistol. Shot competitively all my teen years. Woman Marine, 65-68, Sharpshooter here!! Ignorance of gun safety is what's dangerous. Safety Training prevents gun accidents. Totally agree with the fathers defense. 👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲

But we need restrictions too, some people use it for other malignant intents. Self Defense is necessary but it is achievable without a gun. It's hard to believe that a country that prides itself as being the best in the world is so irresponsible and incompetent when it comes to guns.

I was a farm kid who was taught how to respect and properly use handguns and rifles when I was six years old. Every young person in my area was taught the same. On my 12th birthday, I received a Browning 22 caliber semi-automatic rifle which I used for target practice and hunting with my friends. No one, not one person, I knew was ever negligent with a weapon or was injured in any way. Crime in our area was non-existent. I taught all four of my daughters how to respect and use handguns and rifles when they reached six years old and began taking them to the shooting range with my wife and myself thereafter. We had 4H, Boy Scouts and Girl Scout groups associated with our shooting range that had full shooting safety and shooting proficiency programs for young people starting at six years-old. In the 27 years I was a member of that range, not on young person was ever harmed in any way. Teaching children to respect weapons and use them proficiently prevents accidents and harm from their Improper use…it does not cause it.

Obviously you are city folk. In many rural areas of the US it is dangerous to wander around without a rifle/pistol. Many youngsters protect their younger siblings from wild animals that will eat those younger siblings. Quite often a single shot rifle is not enough because some of these wild animals run in packs. Get a clue, realize that the only irresponsible people are city folks and city folks who teach their kids that illegal drugs are good. A piece of paper on a wall does not make you smarter; how you apply that intellectually does give you wisdom. Learn!

My 9 year Nephew lives with me. I have taught him the essential of gun safety, when he was 6. He has shot my guns, with my super vision, of course. He even has helped me clean them. One day, he asked me if he could get on my computer in my room.
I gave him permission and he went up stairs. He came down a few moments later and told me I had ammo on my desk, next to my computer. I was confused, since I always have my ammo locked away. So I went up, and here it was snap cap. I explained to him it was not a real bullet, and I praised him.
Since he did exactly what I told him to do, if he came across ammo or a gun to get an adult. It's not rocket science people. Teach children gun safety and to respect the weapon, and it will turn out fine.
