Right now I'm reading the Zodiac Academy series. Definitely bully romance. Big trigger warnings for consent. If people can make it through the first book, I think its intriguing enough to keep going.
I am reading “The It Girl” right now and although I’m only 1/3 through it, it gives me dark academia vibes. Definitely lots of snobby college students and a dark mystery that is slowly being revealed. Lots of Secret History vibes, too. If anyone has read the whole thing and disagrees, please chime in. But for sure at least the beginning of the novel has this vibe.
Also, for sure the classic, “A Separate Peace” is total dark academia. I had to read it in high school and it shocked me with the dark aspect. It’s on my all-time top five favorite novels now. Definitely some insufferable characters. It’s high school kids, but I think it meets the requirements!!
I agree with Piranesi fitting the dark academia vibe. I got the same impression while reading it. My favorite one is the one and only If we were villains.
Omg the shirt? The glasses? You're slaying the dark academia look! I love the idea of dark academia but personally, it's not a genre for me. I cannot stand the pretentious characters lol.
The Maidens by Alex Michaelides was pretty good. It’s a mix of Dark Academia, Greek Mythology and a who dun it murder mystery. A great mix and a little surprise for those who read The Silent Patient!
I LOVED 'Vita Nostra'! Also one where you have to suspend your disbelief and the magic system is super interesting, it reminded me in a way of the intricacies in 'Babel' but definitely not the same in concept.
I recently read Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo and quite enjoyed it. It doesn't really have the dark academia aesthetic (uptight/elite characters or friend cliques) but the academia is definitely dark lol.
this look 🤌 i think the library of the unwritten is definitely dark arcadamia (i mean - hell's library!) and i loved the trilogy, especially books 2 and 3 ❤️
Much like thrillers, dark academia is something I feel like I SHOULD enjoy and I like the IDEA of, but I can't seem to find books within the genre that I like. I DNF'd Ninth House. I agree that I could not stand the character and Darlington intrigued me, but not enough. I just couldn't do it. That said - I am going to try Bunny in a couple of weeks. I'm really excited it for it, haha!
I just read an ARC of The Cloisters by Katy Hays and it’s also dark academia, but in a museum setting. It has a great atmosphere (New York, gothic museum, tarot cards…). I would recommend it when it comes out. Plus it’s a debut novel!
I read A Deadly Education and liked it enough to read the second book, which I am almost done with! I feel there is better character development in the second book.
Some scenes of ninth house reminded Me of THE DARK VAULT by V.E. Schwab. So much that i reread the dark vault (after DNFing ninth house) and liked it as much again. (Restarted ninth house) And.. yes..Darlington is the best thing in Ninth house.
I read The Secret Histories last year and still find my mind revisiting scenes…easily one of the best books I’ve read. I read my first “dark academia” book in middle school (though the term didn’t exist as far as I know) and return to it every couple years: Through a Hidden Door. Young adult title but but a wonderful read! Thank You for sharing!
This was a great list. I recently read If We Were Villains and I really liked it a lot more than I imagined that I would since I know nothing about Shakespeare. I am about to read Babel soon and would like to read Vita Nostra at some point as well. Piranesi is an all time favorite for me.
Seconding the Cartographers by Peng Shepherd! Mysterious maps, museums, past tragedy, murder, secret societies, college friends renting a house in the country, etc! It's also the unusual dark academia book that is set in spring, so more of the late winter/early spring chill in tone than a fall kind of read.
Thank you for this video! I really like dark academia. Of the adult books I've read in the subgenre, my top favorites (in no particular order) include: The Secret History; If We Were Villains; Nineth House; Vita Nostra. (I want to mention The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness, but it is so much more.) I'm eagerly awaiting my copy of Babel. The Magicians grossed me out too much. I've also enjoyed some of the YA, including: A Good Girls Guide to Murder series; A Deadly Education series; the Truly Devious trilogy by Maureen Johnson. 📚
I love dark academia so I'll definitely be picking up some of these! My favourites are The World Cannot Give by Tara Isabella Burton and Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo. I also recently read The Society for Soulless Girls by Laura Steven, which has YA vibes despite being set at university, but it was a pretty cool retelling of Jekyll and Hyde, so all about female anger and violence
Great video - I'll be checking some of these out, I'd heard of The Secret History but didn't know what it was about. Confessions also sounds really interesting! I've also had If We Were Villains for years and never read it so I'll have to give it a try! These Violent Delights is good but not dark academia. It's not set in a school or university. It's a Romeo and Juliet retelling, set in 1920s Shanghai, about two warring families and the threat of colonisation. I think you'll enjoy it but just to manage your expectations! :)
This is WHAT I needed!! I’m reading the secret history right now and wow it’s a long one. I’m listening to the audio on UA-cam, and it helps. I’m excited to add more to my list!! I’m so ready for dark academia vibes!!
I'm not sure I've seen In My Dreams I Hold A Knife in your channel yet. It's has that Dark Academia vibes also. Read it lately and really enjoyed it..😁
I enjoyed The Book of the Ancestor trilogy by Mark Lawrence! (Red Sister, Grey Sister, and Holy Sister). Nun assassin school... I think that counts as Dark Academia XD
Idk what you thought of the ballad of songbirds and snakes. It's staring me in the face in the background and maybe a stretch but I feel that one could of been added to the list. I enjoyed it
A discovery of witches I think would qualify. Oxford, professors, researching in the Bodwin Library, a witch denying her gift, a vampire denying his nature, a magical book, and the ones that will do anything to get it... I loved every minute. The follow up books don't have as much taking place in the halls of higher learning, but there is still some.
Your look for this video is giving headmaster of a dark academia school vibes. 👌🏻👌🏻 I loved Atlas Six and Ninth House! I’ve added If We Were Villains to my tbr to check out later, thank you. :)
The library of the unwritten is soo underhyped, but I guess you would enjoy it so much more with less expectations to begin with.. it has librarian from hell, archangel n adventures to find something needed both by gods n demons .. side characters are cool too.. And its dark academia too as its all about books, there is a group, there is murder
Thanks for the video. I was just searching for some dark academia books. I feel the same towards The Atlas Six and overall I feel like YA dark academia is not my thing 😕 I want something more for adults. I am going to try the first books you mentioned but the YA ones maybe not 😅 I had no idea about The Dead Poets Society 😭 I'm so disappointed.
I realise I'm a sucker for dark academia 😂. Would recommend The Likeness from Tana French (#2 after in the woods, even though they can be read separately) it is VERY dark academia and BROKE MY HEART! I want to continue with her books but don't dare to... Anyway! And where did you get your shirt from? 😍
Vita Nostra was a 5 star read for me. I hope you love it! Re: Dead Poets Society, you're missing a very important piece of information about how movie tie-in novels are written and so you're blaming the author for extra "scenes" that weren't in the release. Those scenes were in the script, which is used to write the tie-in. The authors don't know which scenes will be in the final cut, or any other changes made to the script between when they're given it and publication. The book has to be written and ready to publish when the movie is released.
I love your blouse! 😍 Where did you get it from (You don't need to tell me if you don't want to. I'm sorry, if I made you uncomfortable with my question.)?
Legendborn by Tracy Deon is an amazing ya dark academia fantasy. It has great themes, amazing characters and a secret society. It does have a stereotypical ya fantasy romance but the actual story is fabulous
Hi Em! I watched the first season of "The Magicians," and decided to read the book. What a mistake. The tv show is so much better than the book. In fact the books don't exist for me. I wish there were more seasons of the tv show. The banter is amazeballs!
You look beautiful today! Vita Nostra is on my list for the fall too. Don't know what to expect lol. I HATED These Violent Delights. One of the worst books I've read in recent memory. You might like it, but since you asked for opinions...man it was awful.
Oh i'm so glad you're going read Vita Nostra! Ukrainian book yey! I love it, but its extra weird, i was very affected after i read it, had strange dreams and stuff, so yeah. It is definitely the weirdest book i ever read.
I love that we basically had identical opinions about Atlas Six. I wanted to love it so badly but how could you have a book with that setting and not really incorporate it fully? And I am also planning on reading Vita Nostra in the next month. Finally, thank you for not even mentioning The Maidens.
VITA NOSTRAA!!! Loved the first one (read in French, since it's translated from Russian anyway), the second one not so much (That is only translated in french ahaha). Anyway, the books are more companions than a serie!
Vita Nostra is one of the most strange, weird books I ever read, but fantastic in my opinion - it is heavy on philosophy, just to know what you are into..
What? A little life Dark Academia? That's weird! My favorite are the same as yours : The secret History, If we we're villains... Really loved those. I read most of those (love that genre) but I wasn't a big fan of Viscous so I didn't read Vengeful. I should try. Really loved Confessions too. Agree with you for Bunny... very very weird!
I really disliked The Secret History (I found it really boring and didn’t understand the appeal of the characters), so I’ve kind of given up on the genre. BUT I loved R.F. Kuang’s other books so I am really tempted to at least try reading Babel.
Ninth House was...... I don't know. I finished reading it and I also didn't exactly love the main character. Even considering her history and experiences, I still couldn't bring myself to really like her. At all. She was rude and nasty when she didn't need to be. It wasn't "tough girl" it was just rude. A woman/girl can be strong/tough without being completely rude and thoughtless.

So glad to see "these violent delights" here. Is a really good book!
Cover picture for the video is SO pretty and perfect!!

If We Were Villians is my favorite dark academia and one of my favorite books or all time. I loved it. Vita Nostra is next on my list!
The Maidens by Alex Michaelides was pretty good. It’s a mix of Dark Academia, Greek Mythology and a who dun it murder mystery. A great mix and a little surprise for those who read The Silent Patient!
Ace of spades is absolutely immaculate and a must read for dark academia! Also loved summer sons and a lesson in vengence

“These violent delights” is soooo good and unfortunately so underrated. More people should read this book!
I recently read Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo and quite enjoyed it. It doesn't really have the dark academia aesthetic (uptight/elite characters or friend cliques) but the academia is definitely dark lol.
this look 🤌
i think the library of the unwritten is definitely dark arcadamia (i mean - hell's library!) and i loved the trilogy, especially books 2 and 3 ❤️
All three of the books on your TBR are fantastic. Vita Nostra is criminally underrated.

I enjoyed The Lake of Dead Languages. It has more female characters than a lot of dark academia I've read which was nice

Can't wait to dive into this genre. I've read Confessions and yes it does make sense that it could be dark academia I really liked that one.
I'm not sure if you picked up the right "These Violent Delights"? The one I read that had gang wars was by Chloe Gong
My favourite is Vita Nostra! Can't wait to hear your thoughts

I watched the tv show when I was recovering from jaw surgery XD I don't think the book would work for me but it was a fun distraction at the time!
@@BookswithEmilyFox I didn't like the show. I didn't think it did the book justice.
You should try “the likeness” by Tana French 🖤
I'd also add Catherine House. Personally not my cup of tea but if you like the genre check it out.
Piranesi definitely has dark academia vibes! Especially the descriptions of the setting and the overall tone of the novel.
That OUTFIT though 🔥🔥🔥
Your look for this video is giving headmaster of a dark academia school vibes. 👌🏻👌🏻
I loved Atlas Six and Ninth House! I’ve added If We Were Villains to my tbr to check out later, thank you. :)
I loved My Dark Vanessa.
Happy fall (and spooky!!) season Emily :))
The murder part of dark academia books always bores me to tears lol, I want the pretentious characters and the academia without the murder or mystery
Same 😁

Yay, more dark academia recs! I really want to read Babel soon
I definitely want to read Confessions. Bunny wasn't my cup of tea at all. I DNF'ed that one. I found my limit for weirdness with that book!
I read so many and all the others are pretty much on my TBR ^^ I think I have an addiction issue

If We Were Villains is immaculate.
Murder Most Unladylike Series doesn't start Dark Academic but it gets there and it's brilliant!!!

Hi
I've dreamt in German and my German is shit lol I've dreamt in the weird English+Russian used in a Clockwork Orange after listening to the audiobook. That's not a good measurement of fluency lol
I don’t think Dark academia needs to be at a University. It’s an aesthetic.
There’s a look, an area of speciality, the twist and the “dark themes”.
The more o think of it the more I see it as an element of literary decadence. Sensual gratification across a range of senses.
“Against Nature” feels Dark Academia.
