for real. the idea was that people gould go to different states depending on how they want to live, and bc of the electoral college all peoples voice would be heard, not just the ones in cities.
If I remember correctly, one of the reasons why the Electoral exists was to give states such as Cali (back then) a chance since they had a small population.
We see that in states. Illinois is actually very red, but Chicago overrides the rest of the state and makes IL solidly blue. Same with NY, WA, OR and several other states
Because they are a cult. Their Identity is tied up with their Self image of being some intellectually superior, MORALLY SUPERIOR, and more loving , kind, caring creature. It inconceivable to them that they could lose in such a scenario.
37:07 The electoral college was a thing before either of the current political parties were a thing and it is still important because it safeguards the smaller states from the tyranny of the mob. Without it, the coastal cities would decide elections and oppress the “flyover” states
That's why the US are a Republic... Just not a very democratic one. Imagine being worth less in the eyes of the country just because you live in a city...
@ that’s only for the presidential election. The senate and house of representatives (the bodies that make laws) are decided by popular vote and the number of representatives you get is based on population so the city people have more say in the House than the rural people
The electoral college also encourages presidential candidates to actually campaign in more states than just the high populous ones. Most states differ from one another, so trying to appeal to each is needed. Is it perfect? No. But it is better than just straight popular vote because, as stated, it would be mostly just a few cities dictating how the country is run. To counter act the college, as stated above, senators and congressmen are elected by popular votes in each individual state and are the checks and balances against the president. Another problem with our politics is having only 2 parties.
@AA13494 nope, that's not the point I was making. For example, if you live in California, Florida, or even Texas, your vote is worth diddly squat compared to someone's vote in Wyoming, and that's really not fair

7:12 Doesn’t he know the electoral college is based on population? So if more people move to Florida, it’ll get more electoral college votes that will go red and not blue
It's probably because he thinks it will disproportionately increase it so the states that have a higher proportion of votes to the population would be more blue. But that really only works in swing states in that aren't really the areas that the "republicans" are feeling from.

35:50 Vaush is wrong here. The electoral college was not made because of difficulties in counting votes. It was created to stop the majority from oppressing the minority. If large cities have millions more people, then rural farms will never get their policies passed. If they need irrigation systems or subsidized crops, they have to vote. But being outnumbered would mean they never get the help they need. The electoral college goes against democracy, but it does so in favor of the minority with a muffled voice. It's basically the Overton window of policies.
The electoral college was created in 1787. America didn't start industrialization until the early 1800's. Like 80-90% of workers were farmers at the time when the electoral college was created. You are just wrong about this.
@TheArtistKnownAsNooblet We may not have been industrializing yet, but we were spreading from Virginia to California very slowly. The new cities always had fewer people than the first established ones like Virginia. So there was already a huge discrepancy in how people lived and which cities had power. Rural farms are just one example. There are many. The key point is that it's for the minority. So that they at least get heard by someone in power, the someone being the college.
@@Kyoz okay, but why though? What's wrong with one person one vote? Why shouldn't we decide who's in charge by who the majority of people think should be in charge? What reason could you give for thinking sometimes the will of the people should be defied and we should put someone who the majority of people didn't want to win in power other than "I would win less if you did that, and I wanna win more."
@TheArtistKnownAsNooblet I already said. It's for the minority. The majority will usually win, so the majority should have their main issues dealt with fairly quickly. Of course, people will always find something new to complain about, but at some point, one groups complaints start to look like nitpicking or unnecessary compared to what the minority needs. If people in major cities are advocating for the Olympics to be a national holiday, while the minority are advocating for more trade schools in their districts, then the electoral college can easily decide that olympics are a luxury, education and employment are a need. This is an extreme example, but it gets the point across. Sometimes, the majority are well off and do not need anything. When the majority are thriving, we bypass democracy a bit to help out the minority. We do so by accumulating the needs of many minority groups onto a politician (usually left leaning), and the electoral college can choose to elect this politician instead of who the majority picked. If the majority were very indecisive, then it also makes sense to let the minority get what they need while the majority reevaluates their needs. The majority should win the majority of the time. About 75% - 80% of the time. But the college should step in about 20% - 25% of the time.
@@Kyoz so yeah you're answer is "I should be allowed to cheat because if I couldn't how would I win?" why bother with the electoral college then? All that does is unfairly weight votes to less populous states. Why not just flip a coin and if you get heads twice the second most popular guy wins? Is it maybe because it's more obvious that that's a pretty bad way to choose who's in charge? Also local governments exist, if you have local issues you want solved you can and do fix them locally. But when deciding the overall direction of the country everyone should have equal say.
nah see, im a democrat that voted Trump because a lot of people have seem to forgotten that Trumps policies are the Democrat policies during and before Obama's Administration that I grew up on believing...... also Trump was a democrat that funded them for decades and donated to black democrat in the 80's for President
Exactly! Democrats used to be pro-worker and reasonable on things like immigration. I was a democrat for most of my life. The first time I voted for a republican was for Trump in 2016. I haven’t even changed my political positions very much. The democrats have just gone so far left that it’s hard to vote for them. I did vote for Josh Shapiro (I live in PA). I hope the democrats wake up and realize they have been captured by far left ideologues. We need at least two healthy, reasonable parties in this country.
@@TDBanimefanI think you’re right to an extent. The difference between the two sides as far as I can see is that one side wants the state to provide for most of their needs (high taxes, many entitlements) while the other side wants the state to get out of the way so that they can provide for their own needs (low taxes, way less entitlements). Conflicting visions.
I have been voting since 1996 and have NEVER been polled. I put zero credence into polls whether my candidate is winning or losing. The 2004 exit polls were way off.
"I have been voting since 1996 and have NEVER been polled." .......are you seriously this dumb? Check what % of the population gets polled every year across all of the polling systems, not just elections but every poll Pew runs too for example, then calculate out how many years someone would need to live to *expect* to be polled even a single time. Math really isn't all that complicated.
@donutbevil9669 No, it really does not. Its possible for most of the country to not get a say under this system. The only states that matter are the swing states. Its a sham, brought about out of good intentions. Keep in mind that if popular vote mattered trump would have still won amd im ok with that.
As somebody who lives in Florida... Could not care less about the election, and the people who say that they think it should be removed from America... Because there are those idiots... We contribute more as a state than most of America, have no debt, and can self sustain in all aspects. Good luck surviving without us.
Imagine vilifying an attacking men and not only that young white ones for the past 10 to 20 years and I completely shocked when most of us don't vote for your interests?
The electoral college is great and we definitely should keep it. We should all go the the Nebraska/Maine model imo. What people don't understand is that the federal government is not by the people for the people, it's by the states for the states. There's a lot of overlap there, but fundamentally by the people for the people is what the state government is for. We elect senators to represent the interests of our state. We elect house reps to represent the interests of specific regions of the state. And we elect electors to represent the interests of the state in the presidential election.
@@e.c.winner7252 Literally the other way around, which is why Dems win the popular vote but sometimes still loose the election. Republicans are all spread out, and no state is more than 70% red, while many states are routinely more than 90% blue. Giving more voting power to the minority in red states that are only 60% red will give dems a chance to win them even without being majority popular in them.
@@kopykat6843 Yea, it really sucks when the overwhelming majority of a states population gets to set the agenda for that state. We would be much better off if mega farms that employ almost exclusively illegals had even more outsized influence than they already do.... or is that not what you meant?
I hadn’t laughed out loud that hard to a video in years. “My data was empirical! My math was analytica! The only thing I didn’t account for was the R word of the Americans!”
That was not surprising. Miami Dade and Florida in general have been rapidly moving to the right. The RGV counties in Texas were surprising, I did not expect Trump to win those
The funny thing is there is a large group of independent voters in my state, every one of them i know voted for Trump (or, of course, Jill Stein or Chase Oliver)😅😂
The way you phrased it makes me think it's hilarious that she went from "I'm speaking" at her rallies to "I'm not going to speak" the night of the loss
The electoral college was made to represent population density and the numbers of electoral college votes have changed multiple times throughout American history to represent population growth.
Every state gets 2 senators and at least one representative. Congress has 455 Representative seat that are partitioned to the states based on population. States get one elector for every representative and senator totaling for a minimum of 3 electors.
They change with population growth, yes, but they were not designed to be equally proportional across all states. The electoral college was a compromise between popular voting, which the more populous states wanted and every state having the same number of votes, which the smaller states wanted. It was a compromise that was a crucial part of the agreement states made with the federal government to join the union. Lest people forget, our country is a union of 50 separate governments, not just collections of population density.
I think Selser's decision to leave (Made long before the poll was released and her employer previously notified) allowed her to make her last poll a cope-fest/propaganda poll for her side of the political aisle.

It dumbfounds me on how almost half the country voted for Kamala, especially with how she was probably the absolute worst candidate to run for the Democratic Party’s representative for president.

23:19 “conventional wisdom” (which is not applicable to modern politics) is that a low turnout favors republicans, while a high turnout favors democrats. That’s probably where Voosh is getting this from. Since 2016, however, this is no longer the case.
@@e.c.winner7252 it still is though, there was less turnout this election and a Republican won. Trump only has like a million more votes than he did in 2020 but Kamala has 7 million less votes than Biden did in 2020. That's a net loss of 6 million voters.

It's only because of the electoral college that we have swing states. No E. College and all the focus would be only been on states like NY, CAL, FL, TX, and large population states. Basically if you don't live close to water (ocean), YOU would never see a candidate campaigning in your community.

Whats the importance of the popular vote wouldnt the normal vote make it redundant? Granted this was my first time voting trump and im an ex Jehovah's witness, so still new to politics since we weren't allowed to vote.
The popular vote is ultimately irrelevant. But democrats like to track it because it gives them something to either 1) lord over republicans when they win the electoral college AND the popular vote or 2) complain about how the electoral college is unfair when the Dems win the popular vote and lose the electoral college vote. It is extremely rare for the Republican candidate to win the popular vote. The democrat candidate almost always wins the popular vote, regardless of the electoral college, which is why they’re not handling this election very well. No. But it is better than just straight popular vote because, as stated, it would be mostly just a few cities dictating how the country is run. To counter act the college, as stated above, senators and congressmen are elected by popular votes in each individual state and are the checks and balances against the president. Another problem with our politics is having only 2 parties.

Vaush is wrong here.
Vaush is such a pseudo intellectual that when you google it, his face should be what pops up.

The popular vote is ultimately irrelevant. But democrats like to track it because it gives them something to either 1) lord over republicans when they win the electoral college AND the popular vote or 2) complain about how the electoral college is unfair when the Dems win the popular vote and lose the electoral college vote. that being said you will find will find verious different opinions on the matter but i personally think the popular vote is important since you get to see what kind of party ideas important for Americans as a hole but its not the full picture since per party registration there is actually more republicans then democrats however most republicans tend to be working class Americans who don't have a big stake in politics so they are less likely to vote which is why democrats dominate the popular vote, the other factor is the dems just tend to be more popular in places with larger populations which also helps
that being said the reason we have a electoral college is becuase the united states political structure is a union which means that each memeber state has a say in how America's policy functions while keeping America democratic basically each state is assighned a certain number of electoral votes based on population wyoming has 5 while california has 50 but the population of wyoming is 500k while cali has 30m poeple what this allows for is that wyoming has a say in our election more poportional to its population
