- John Barrymore, Jr. starred as a wild Texas juvenile in HIGH LONESOME (1950) which was written and directed by Alan LeMay, best known as the author of novels. Two of those novels have become classics: “The Searchers” and “The Unforgiven.”
Barrymore is a misunderstood Texas youth several years before GIANT and James Dean exploded on the screen. Like GIANT, this film was shot on location in Marfa, Texas, showcasing the landscape in beautiful Technicolor. Just prior to filming HIGH LONESOME, Barrymore had co-starred with Robert Preston, Chill Wills and Jack Elam in THE SUNDOWNERS. Both Wills and Elam are back in this film, along with John Archer, Kristine Miller, Lois Butler and veteran Basil Ruysdael.
There’s some action that looks as if it were performed by Barrymore. I always like Barrymore Jr. especially his villainous roles in two different GUNSMOKE episodes. He had great screen presence, which he inherited from his father and must have passed along to his daughter, Drew.
Writer-director Alan LeMay wrote his first screenplay in 1940 for Cecil B. DeMille’s epic, NORTHWEST MOUNTED POLICE starring Gary Cooper. Other screenplays include REAP THE WILD WIND with John Wayne, WALKING HILLS with Randolph Scott and ROCKY MOUNTAIN with Errol Flynn. On TV LeMay wrote for CHEYENNE, SUGARFOOT, BRONCO and WIDE COUNTRY.

GREAT MOVIE! I always felt that they did a good job with script, set and props, to realistically portray the West as it was. I always thought that this film was adapted from a Louis La' Mour Book. Was surprised to see that it was LeMay's from start to finish. Thanks, Rob!

You are the best, Real Big Bad John!
Where can I get a copy of the song, "20 Miles from Carson", that Chill Wills sang in this movie, at the dance? I love that song, but can't hear all the lyrics, because of the actors lines, understandably. I'd appreciate it if you could direct me to where I could get a copy of that song, please. Big Chill Wills fan. I am a follower of your channel also. Love these old westerns that you bring back. Keep up the good work.
I’ve never seen it available, Ronnie. I always liked Chill’s singing.
I serpose thats one way to soften a TOM CAT.😅
I have not seen this movie in years but hated it so back then never wanted to see it again and still have not. if this is the kind of roles that Drew Barrymores father got I feel sorry for him. His character is totally unlikable. Miserable movie
