Watching this craftsman forge the point to fit to the handle, I was in awe at the speed with which he made each one. When he was making the blades it stepped up a level. Fascinating to watch and wonder how many thousands of hours went into making the work look so easy, when it is anything but that.

I can just imagine the work required before machines. It takes a master to produce these with machines.
Before the invention of fire, humans just slapped the crap out of random objects, so the knowledge of forging metal got lost for thousands of years.

Interesting how they go out the blacksmith with the full grind, though it makes sense how its ready to use upon buying.
Where I'm from, sickles and other farm & garden hand tools like machetes are usually sold without the final sharpening grind, and whoever buys them finishes the sharpening first to his/her own preference before use. I don't know if it's a safety thing, but usually the people here who would buy them always re-sharpen the tools anyway before using them on the fields.

그런데 김해 낫은 모양이 제가 어릴적부터 봐왔던 낫과 많이 다르네요.
서남부 경남쪽의 낫은 꺽인 부분이 조금더 둥근 형태입니다.
다른 지역은 어떤지 궁금하네요.
남부지방은 아니지만 어렸을 때 본 낫이 조금 더 둥글었어요
용도에 따라 낫의 종류가 다릅니다.
나무를 대상으로 거친 작업을 하는 조선낫은
날이 좀더 넓고 두껍고 목부분까지 날이 서있죠.
지역적 차이도 조금 있는걸로 압니다.
저건 풀낫으로 보입니다 ...

Alot of hilly terrain can't be reached by machinery, lots of people can't afford to own and run machinery. Plus, they get sharpened often and are thin so they wear out quickly

nvm that, I didn't know there was such a demand for hand made forged sickles.
I didn't know either. My first thought was that they could still be used for harvesting rice since machinery would damage the rice fields.

I understand craftsman ship and all that, but if you're not going to layer in harder metals for the edge like a sword, why forge a flat piece from a round bar? Cutting blanks from a sheet would reduce time and costs to make this by a huge margin, and it would be a more consistent and better quality product.
I appreciate the long tang for balance and cutting power. Many sickles are an all-wooden handle with a blade. Are these sickles sold in the US?

저도 같은 생각을 했습니다.
여러가지 공정 사이에 작업위치 옆에 카트나 수레등을 두면
작업과정이 훨씬 수월할텐데 굳이 저렇게 하는 특별한 이유가 있을까 싶네요.
뜨거운거랑 관련이 없을거 같은데 말이죠.

Work for 40 years an still don't know that have to use hearing protection on all those machines...

seems awful labor intensive for what it is and the look of the final result. a stamping machine would eliminate all that hammering and re-heating and give you a better looking part that was perfect every time. stamp, sharpen, install the handle and burn in the logo. if you want it pretty powder coat or plate it.
And that is why Chinese stuff is such crap. The sparks coming off that steel was a sign of quality, not made from some recycled Toyota.

어릴적 쓰던 조선낫 오랜만에 보니 감회가 새롭네요.. 예전에 쓰든것보다 가벼워보이네요..손도 많이 베였는데 예전처럼 묵직한 조선낫의 타격감이 그립습니다.. 좀 더 무겁고 굵은낫도 생산해보심이 어떠실지요..
저건 일반 조선 낫의 종류 중 풀낫 이라고 합니다 ...
