One of the reasons that the character of Patrick Jane worked as well as it did, is because he wasn't the traditional super hero tier detective that you get in this kind of show. For one thing, he had no fighting ability whatsoever. He was very smart, but was outsmarted multiple times by smarter villains. He was believable as a character and had a lot of growth over the seasons.
