Composer: Johann Friedrich Fasch

About this Album:
Fame is a strange thing. Although Johann Friedrich Fasch was highly esteemed by his contemporaries and the generations of musicians who followed him, in the concert repertoire of today he is grouped together with many minor masters who wrote a lot of works that sadly communicate very little. Yet music scholar Johann Adolf Scheibe put Fasch into the same class as Telemann, and J.S. Bach possessed copies of several of the composer’s works. This release therefore aims to expose the genius of Fasch, and in doing so to help restore appreciation for what has become a largely forgotten corpus of deftly written, utterly absorbing music.
Fasch made his name largely through his overtures, works which in the 17th and 18th centuries referred to a series of dance movements prefaced by an extensive introduction of pompous gravity. Two are explored in this release - the Overture in D minor and the Overture in B flat ‘a due cori’, arranged by M. Fechner and E. Steinsdorff respectively - and they are followed by a selection of Fasch’s sonatas for two oboes and bassoon, with and without basso continuo, works whose details (such as free, fantasy-like episodes to be played at a slow pace) reveal a rich field for experimentation. A Concerto in D and a Sonata for 2 oboes and 2 bassoons also feature, and overall one is struck by this composer’s highly personal style of chamber music - a stark contrast to the ingratiating melodies and harmonic suavity of his large-scale instrumental pieces.

Thanks for this index
Thank you for promoting this wonderful composer. Simply gorgeous instrumental music.
If not for You Tube I would never knew about existence of this and many other Great Composers.
In fact, Fasch is one of the most underrated German baroque composers. But at least, like Telemann, he is still one of the “better known of the unknown”. There are numerous German composers from this period who are almost completely unknown. You have to imagine the following: In the 18th century, today's Germany was split up into around 300 small states, a result of the Thirty Years' War. And accordingly every royal and princely court, every residence etc. had not only court composers, but also band masters, cantors and organists, who also mostly left compositions. And, of course, for this vast number of "little" composers it is difficult or even impossible to step out of the oversized shadow of Johann Sebastian Bach or Georg Friedrich Handel.
@@BiancoSanGiovanni ,
very well said, thank you !!

Fasch, another great of german baroque along with Bach and Händel.
criminally underrated
JS Bach, G Handel, G Telemann and JF Fasch; what a period of time to produce so many German genius's. I love all four! Thank you for putting these on YT Brilliant Classics.
They weren't the only ones. Germans were the acknowledged leaders in music for a couple hundred years. Which is why I laugh when people make bad jokes about Germans "not being musical" and pretend that they only listen to oompah bands and bad pop music and EDM. Not that there is anything wrong with oompah bands or EDM. Haydn, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Telemann, Beethoven, all the greatest names. The rest are Russian, although they came after the greatest Germans mostly.
Everyone esteems mozart and the germans but noone will come close to the beauty ,creativity of the italians like vivaldi, albinoni, guiseppe torelli.the only german that comes close to the beatiful works of these composers is johann palchelbel and maybe telemann.haydn while he is praised for his ideas, has melodies that are forgetable and annoying.i could never find myself to like his music though i have tried.j.s. back has a few very good compositions that are very complex and enjoyeable.i havent listened to fasch but i like what i hear so far but its sounding similiar on the compositions
I don't understand how no one knows about Fasch and Telemann and Handel I've never heard of Telemann or Fasch until I discovered them myself I love how distinct Fasch and Telemann are and how original Handel is but love Haydn's music also these are real artists who made original music. Such a gift it is to have this music what irreplaceable people.
Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688 - 1758) was a German violinist and composer. I come to know him today in 2019!
Wonderful composer..I'd not heard of him before..what a find!🤩
One of my top favorite albums that I purchased over the past few years.
Fasch's music has aged well and falls very nicely on the ears. Its elegance makes it amazing to think he was a contemporary of JS Bach.
Hello Paul, I didn't know that but as I have been listening-yes it sounds a lot of that era. Beautiful!😻
He actually sounds ½ generation later/younger than J.S.Bach.
The same goes for Antonio Salieri, who was a contporary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
When it showed up after Manfredini, I first thought it was Bach. So carefully structured. But then the elegance, as you say, made me wonder, and it is Fasch. I love the melodious promise of dance and joy in it.
Can't believe I only found this composer in 2018, he is great.
Me too, Mr. Brian!! FANTASTIC stuff!!
Same here. I found Fasch on a search for Baroque composers admired by J S Bach.
Try all the composers of the Dresden Court!

Johann Friedrich Fasch (Composer)
Born: April 15, 1688 - Buttelstedt near Weimar, Thuringia, Germany
Died: December 5, 1758 - Zerbst, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Johann Friedrich Fasch, a contemporary of J.S. Bach and Georg Frideric Handel, was one of Germany's leading composers in the first half of the 18thcentury.
Well, I listen to this pretty regularly and I thought I would say thank you. Fasch is one of the great under-rated talents of musical history, and so these lovely overture suites and sonatas are a very welcome addition to the available recordings of his music. They are crisp and well played and recorded. I have Motor Neurone Disease and music is one of my pleasures. I shall buy this for my iPad/iPhone, so putting them here has worked as a marketting strategy as well as giving me a great deal of pleasure. Thank you so much. Love from Rick
I have listened to him a little before, but not quite apreciated him,but then the more you listen to music and the entirity of composers, you see how wonderful his music is and how consistently good, with soft, gentle, beautiful melodies that doesnt bore
Joya de colección. Que música más hermosa. Amo el Barroco , amo a Fasch . Fascinante !!
I visited the Nikolaikrche in Buttelstedt to see where Fasch was baptised. Out of sheer luck I met a woman who took me into the small town museum in the town square, it was the house where Fasch had lived.
Excellent !
Thank you, I love your selection of baroque music.
Johann Friedrich Fasch was the father of the composer Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch (1736-1800).
Johann Friedrich Fasch founded in Leipzig a 'Collegium Musicum,' which seems to have been the ancestor of the 'Grosse Concert' and so of the Gewandhaus concerts; he wrote overtures for the society in the style of Georg Philipp Telemann
I really love classical music, from Renaissance to Modern. I really enjoy the music of Fasch and Zelenka, getting know their music. There are so many unknown composers who have written beautiful music, also musical composition that are not known. Bizets Te Deum is magnificent and Bruce's concerto for two pianos is ecstatic specially the slow movement
The music of Fasch is of the highest order. No wonder J.S. Bach admired this composer.
Brilliant Classics is The Best Music Channel :D
Heard music on the radio yesterday and wondered who's genius was behind it. Haendel perhaps? No, not quite. Happy I heard then it was Fasch. A new favourite on my list ✨
Studying physics and mathematics on this music 🎶 makes me more focus, thank you 🙏
I'm grading geography papers on a cold night listening to him. Also terrific for focusing!
Maravillosa . Gracias Fasch. Gracias @Brilliant Classics. Saludos desde Chile !
Yet another brilliant classic from Brilliant Classics. Thank you!
This work is TOTALLY priceless! It's honestly my new favorite. Thanks, BC!
I read that the other Johann, Johann Bach, held Fasch in high esteem and composed during the same time period. It's amazing I've never heard about him until today! It's like realizing that if it wasn't for a musical priest in Italy we wouldn't have known about Vivaldi. In fact I would say that most didn't know about Vivaldi until 1930's when most of his work was discovered. Crazy! How many other people are like this?
If you like Fasch, check out Dall'Abaco, Reichenauer and Stoezel, they're good discoveries too! ua-cam.com/video/AoY4VDduMkE/v-deo.html
@@Jalapablo you're not kidding Dall'Abaco is great!
At least the music exists, it is up to people to realize it and start playing it. A lot of music from history is really fine for good, or partially gone. I try to just be thankful for what has survived, just like all the rest of our artistic heritage. I wish I hadn't wasted so many years of my life before realizing I was totally wasting my time with modern popular music, and that there was a huge amount of fantastic music of all eras and cultures to be experienced.
@@justforever96 I like a lot of different styles of music, but I don't waste my listing to garbage. Three or four cord progression. Most pop music has the same cords whether or not on the piano or computer synthesizer.
The music of FASCH is great. So delicate moving and touching.i love it.
How wonderful is this music! Thank you for sharing!💓
To my surprise, hearing this music, at age 80 I became a faschist.
I could echo that - moving away from the well -trodden path, we are introduced to Widmann, Capricornus, Gallus, Posch, Reichenauer and a steady stream of other composers who have been consistently neglected.
Another Great Composer I Am not familiar with. My heartfelt thanks for introducing me to this beautiful music .Just so melodious & exhilarating .
Ora, ora, vivendo e aprendendo!
Thank you!
My inner gratituted to BC. I never heard about Fasch until a few years ago. You have unearthed a musical monument that remains alive like the first bird singing in the morning. I could infer that even Johann Sebastian Bach could be a fan of such a remarkable Master. Blessings. From Santiago . Chile.

This is an alter-Hanedel. And I mean that with the utmost respect, this music is gorgeous!

Couldn't agree more!

Yes me too
Very good collections
You slighted these wonderful pieces of classical or baroque music as mere instrumental music. I have always revered western classical music which soothed or pacified my mind on numerous occasions from 1979 onwards , when I was studying for graduation.
What do you mean "mere instrumental music"? That is what it is. There are no vocals. Being instrumental has nothing to do with the quality of the music.
1:12:02 is my favourite part! I especially like those sequences at 1:12:18.
Muy al estilo de A. Vivaldi
Lindooooo 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍

He was one of six candidates for the vacant post in Leipzig; it went to JSB. Jn
Amo a Brilliant
Obrigada
@@ruperttmls7985 Muchas gracias. Lo escucho y luego comento. Buen día
Esplêndido!
Google Baroque, Rococo and Classical music, you'll be amazed at how many artists show up that you've probably never heard of.
Fasch is a typical Germen composer of the middle and late baroque. In a time hen the Lutheran music tended ro be more mellow. nevertheless, Fasch is usually an energetic composer, as we can here through various instrumental pieces.Of curse, he id no JSB, but these worl ks are rather original and unique to be heard.
@Gérard Begni - Thank you for your objective statement. Unlike most of euphoric posters who probably for the first time ever heard Fasch's music, you make a clear point saying he doesn't equal JSB, but that "these works are rather roriginal and unique to be heard".
Alimento mi espíritu....
Izuzetna barokna muzička svetkovina.
The orchestration of this music is a bit different than other Baroque composers. The charming effect of pairing groups of instruments in contrast to one another for example, creates an interest that I find wonderfully original.
It's not really Baroque. The first piece is Galant style. Having a separate wind section is Galant, but keeping the basso continuo means it's not yet Classical era.
So magnificent. Have you ever thought about posting any Orlando Gibbons?
Aaah, music I can play sudoku by.
