- South Africans love big bakkies, but we've never had access to the really big stuff that services America. Trucks like the Dodge Ram, Ford F150 or the Chevy Colorado would probably sell well here, but they have always been made exclusively in left-hand drive.
A local brand has decided to do right-hand drive conversions of the Ram 1500, and you can now order them. The conversion is done in KZN and we had a chance to drive and test the model in JHB. Jacob Moshokoa reviews this American pick-up and gives his opinion on whether you should be looking to upgrade to a Yank tank.

I'm impressed that South Africa is seen as a potential target market for brands like RAM, I just hope they have adequate dealer availability.

It's not an official move from Ram, just an independent importer.
It's just brought in by ustrucks, no official support, seen them driving around for years

It's a very cool truck and it definitely blows all the local bakkies out of the water. But R2.8mill is obscene.
The peddles can move to allow for heavy duty boots or construction boot. It's a tough work horse
I'm actually surprised these aren't being imported from Australia, considering they're imported into Australia by Ateco as a LHD vehicle and then re-manufactured into a RHD vehicle and sold officially through Jeep/Chrysler/RAM dealers in Australia and New Zealand, covered by their new vehicle warranties. Walkinshaw does the conversions in Melbourne and they also do the Chevrolet Silverado 1500/2500/3500 and the Toyota Tundra. The Ford F-150 is done by RMA Automotive and sold as an official import and sold through Ford dealers in Australia.

A person who buys this Van is not worried about fuel consumption, the money is there, so if you still worry about L/100 then forget about this one
The accelerator up and down is for adjusting height. If you have long legs you wiil bring the pedals down otherwise my short kings will bring the pedals up

I've grown to like bakkies/pickups as well as the American full-sizers after having use them in some trade jobs overseas, my personal favourite being the RAM TRX.
But the price tags on these... 😬
To no one's surprise, they're also insanely expensive in the United States too - that includes the "cheaper", less fancy base model trims as well. Some will cost $60k - $100k+. I remember the RAM TRX these guys showcased being over R4mil, which is crazy.

There is a company in Centurion which does the same... They are American something as well I've seen a few ram and dodge vehicles which we don't have in South Africa and they look kinda intimidating at first glance

Its about time a pick-up truck actually worth mentioning is gaining traction on our roads. If only Ford SA would catch a freakin wake up and release the F150 in RHD in conjunction with RMA like they have done in Australia. The bakkie market in SA is so narrow minded, fixated on the Ranger and Hilux platforms as if they are the be all and end all of bakkies or pickups, hell, even GWM have got something a bit more " large and incharge" with reclining rear seats and better passenger legroom in the back.
this is the truck you buy to survive a🤠🤠 apocolypse😵💫😮but the fuel range is crazy yor. this has to be like your second car or somethin..either way its different and awesome - like the cooler box sides🤤

This is a serious truck!
20L per 100km on average is not uncommon for even locally supplied high performance vehicles (V8s with at least 300Kw give same consumption in in-town driving and drops to about 13L/100Km on freeways). Even old petrol V8 SUV (Nissan Patrol etc) would consume around 18L/ 100Km in city driving. Phela R1200 of 95 octane is just around 40L. This consumption is not abnormal for a V8 high performer.
The first thing you should let us know is the engine specs. After 11 minutes I only know it’s a V8 but I have no idea what the displacement is…🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️

5.7L V8 petrol engine, consumption 15L/100km estimated, Am sure real world driving that's more like 20L/100km for local driving

American trucks are very thirsty. Perhaps why America is always fighting for oil. They make beautiful trucks though. Love the Tundra

this is a big F Off Truck thats American in all aspects,just look at those seats,he was being swallowed in those seats!Also the reason for that button to adjust the pedals is to assist the target demographic of the truck to reack the pedals.

Decadent. No argument justifying R5,50 per km JUST for fuel. Then comes insurance, licencing (and you need a truck license) and the cost penalty when you try to sell it. A stupid man's choice.
Fuel consumtion is hectic while testing because of driving style, only requires code 8 and keeps value better than MOST vehicles in SA. So that would make every LC VX200 and VX300 owner stupid too 🤔

A 2015 Ram sells for R1, 055, 000 the seller probably was offered R800, 000 so if you are looking to spend R2,7 mil on a Ram don't believe you will not loose millions by the time you realise that R12,000 per month only on fuel is not good for your retirement plan. Add to that almost R40,000 per month on installments and don't even want to guess what the insurance premium is, that is costing another R600,000 per year on running costs. So no. You don't need it.
