  • Julian made a picture of Lucy when he was four years old, and the rest is history. John wrote a simple story, selecting you for the protagonist. The love interest is "the girl with kaleidoscope eyes," presumably a woman, though referred to as a girl as a term of endearment. It's not clear whether she knows you've been following her, or why you answer slowly when somebody calls. Maybe you're only half-awake? In any case, there's only a vague story with a razor-thin plot, with colorful references for the imagination's indulgence. The perfect song for a children's cartoon.
Detractors complain that the song is PR for psychedelic recreation. That's a limiting perspective. The author went to art school and his best friend Stu was a painter. Sure, psychedelics appeared enmasse during 1967, but watching the evening news could be considered PR for psychedelic recreation. John was adamant that the song was about Julian's drawing, nothing more, and he never hedged the truth. I think the human psyche is too delicate, reality is too precious, and tripping is too risky. Keep your feet firmly planted on earth. There is a growing realm of psychology experimentation these days, looking for treatments to address emotional and mental disorders, so I'll just stay out of the way. Researchers have gathered promising results.
The lyrics to the song are pleasant, nobody gets hurt, and you have a chance encounter with a gal with unusual features. These elements combined together, infused with a great melody and inventive chord progression, create a satisfying musical journey, and it's always been a favorite.
I played guitar and bass, sang lead and harmony vocals, as you see in the video. I also sequenced the drum loops and played the symphonic strings on the keyboard. I've been playing this version for many years, and this version is the culmination of a few plateaus.
