    I added one of these ms400 saws to the family today. Haven't touched wood with it yet,but can't wait. I have to say it is the best starting stihl I have seen. I'm pretty sure I will like it.

      I bet you will love it! In the experience I have had with it, it is probably the best professional saw Stihl makes for the price in my opinion. Granted, I haven’t ran all of them but just from the videos I have watched and compared with to our saw it stands out.

      @@mattsfirewoodvideos738 Matt we have the warranty for two years on our saw I figured if something happened to the saw I would just re install the stock cap back on the muffler! All the bark box does is replace the outer cover of the stock muffler. The whole remaining muffler that bolts to your cylinder head stays intact from factory.

    I'm going to try this tomorrow. I've 5 or 6 tanks of fuel thru my 400c and it has been 90% or more in the cuts, yet is still doesn't seem as smooth in the cut as I expect. Maybe this reprogram will make the difference.

    Todd, i only have 1 mtronic, a 241. I will have to try it on that. I usually keep all my saws original, but that bark box woke it up. I was just in the local store and saw a ms261 carbureted saw. I almost bought it, but saving for an MS880 because i got a few trees to slab.

    • @WhackinAxes
      @WhackinAxes  2 роки тому +1

      The 880 would be a cool toy to have! But without a use for it that’s one pretty penny for just a toy! In your case for making slabs it would be awesome!

    • @toddsoutsideagain
      @toddsoutsideagain 2 роки тому +2

      Craig the 261 is a saw that I will get someday to go with my 400c! Are you saying you put a bark box on your 241?

    • @craigwilson9560
      @craigwilson9560 2 роки тому +2

      Todd, no i didnt put a bark box on my 241. I should have been more clear. I meant about tuning those M-Tronics. That 261 with a carburetor would be awesome with that 400.
      Evan, if i did not have some big oaks and a big Pecan tree to take down and slab, i would not get one. Accountant says i need to expense out some money for taxes.

    When you make your first cut after the reprogrammed mtronic system you’ll really notice the increase in power of the 400c and if you want to gain more power let me know and I’ll tell you everything I’ve done to mine to get as much power as possible out of this little hotrod of a saw . Todd ,question ,can a 400 M handle a 25' bar meaning oil wise lubricating the chain sufficiently??? Please advise me whenever you can, I thank you in advance Gunter
    PS. What about that magnesium piston how safe r they ? Have they really proven themselves, hearing conflicting opinions on the coating possible flaking chipping which could damage the piston and furthermore the bearings down below in the crankcase?
    What's your opinion n experience with the 400 on that matter???

    When modifying engines, and putting on aftermarket parts you sometimes upset the balance of the engine. Yes it puts out more power etc but it usually shortens engine life. If it was that easy I’m sure that Stihl would put that fix on their saws. I’m a heavy duty mechanic and I see this happening on Diesel engines. A good sample is aftermarket air cleaners, if it’s that simple to get more power the engine manufacturers would put it on at manufacture as it would only cost pennies more. You’ll get lots of people saying I’m wrong, but just think about it. Enjoy your videos as always, keep up the good work. Cheers

    • @WhackinAxes

      I agree! Just a simple thing can change the output of a motor a lot more than you think! Thanks for watching!

    • @em4703
      @em4703 2 роки тому +4

      Sorry, but you're wrong. There's nothing "unbalancing" the engine when doing a muffler mod, especially on these simple 2 strokes. Why Stihl doesn't do it this way stock? Because they got emission and noise limits to pass. That's it.

    • @toddsoutsideagain
      @toddsoutsideagain 2 роки тому +2

      @ Gerry Spang .. Thanks for the info Gerry I agree that if you go to far with a stock machine of any kind you can shorten the life of an engine. That being said I have a duramax and the dealer suggested that I delete the def on it because they choke them down too far from factory! The guy I took it to is a world renowned diesel mechanic and he said the same thing! As long as you stay as close to stock as you can like I did with a simple tune the engine will run cooler more efficient and last longer! I get better fuel economy as well! That being said the bark box install on this saw should make it run cooler and last longer. Basically all the bark box does is add a second hole for exhaust to escape. The stock muffler is still intact behind the bark box. Thanks for interacting and commenting! That’s what it’s all about!

    • @gerryspang5917
      @gerryspang5917 2 роки тому +2

      @@em4703 I’m a heavy duty mechanic, not a small engine, if I’m wrong I’m sorry, but most engines are made to run with a certain amount of back pressure, in the small engines I dealt with in the generators they have a muffler that’s a spark arrestor. This is a safety item. Any time you put aftermarket parts on it it upsets the factory specs which are all in compliance, that’s why people usually wait till the engine is out of warranty, as modifying an engine voids warranty by the Orem. In later years I was transferred to tech support and many people would complain why they had engine problems. After asking questions it usually turned out the engine had been deleted, or modified.. cheers my friend

      Walnut causes chimney fires . It's very bad to burn in a wood stove. I've had people tell me I'm full of it until they have their own chimney fire .
