    I already have the American history book and have been eyeballing the Usborne world history book.
    I stumbled across Story of the World and I'm so excited about it. It is exactly what I wanted for read alouds!

    This is so cool seeing how eager your older boys are to talk about what's going on.

    I went through all 4 volumes of SOTW with Katie in elementary and then switched to MOH in middle school. We really enjoyed it!

    Can you do a video talking about how you feel, as Christian, learning about the ancients myths, gods and goddesses that the first volume covers in depth?

    • @PenniesAndSalt
      @PenniesAndSalt  2 роки тому +2

      Good question! Even the Bible tells of pagan beliefs and false Gods. I approach it in the same way, by connecting it to the Bible.
      One thing I really like about SOTW is that it teaches it with the view point that that is what those nations or cultures believed, not that we should actually believe that. It gives me as the parent autonomy to come in and disciple my children through it using a Christian World View. We had great discussions about it. And just remember, if you really don’t feel comfortable with a part of it, you could always skip it until they’re older 😉

      @@PenniesAndSalt thank you for your thoughtful reply. I’m curious on your view point, as I make preparations and think through this one aspect of the curriculum that I’m struggling with, did you personally linger in studying those chapters containing other gods and read the extra books and do the extra activities? Part of the reason why I love sotw is the from the array of things you can choose from to ‘beef up’ each topic and in theory, I would love to do all of them! But I wonder, if when we get to those subjects if they can be addressed and talked about but perhaps not a subject we linger in and add in extras. I hope that makes sense. :) I know that you can not answer for me what is best for us, so I’m only asking about how you handled these subjects. Did you utilize the activity books and extra resources as you did so the topic of the freedom quilt and Underground Railroad? Anyway, just curious if you have a chance to get back to me. Love your channel! God bless. :)

      I had to respond. I was so hesitant to teach my kids anything about the Greek & Roman myths but as they got older, upper elementary, middle school, ect… it has really helped us understand the world we live in today. Where the the culture comes from, why people do certain things and how history just repeats itself. It also helps us differentiate between our biblical worldview and other world views.

      @@LivingWithEve Greek & Roman seem fictional enough. We actually enjoy reading the stories and anything Greek & Roman myth because to us, it's literally just a fictional story. We have noticed the same too about it helping our kids understand the world around us. Right now, we just got the the section on Islam (Vol 2) and I have taken a break because I feel like it's pretty parallel to Christianity so I want to make sure I am able to navigate it without confusing my kids. Did you do Vol 2? Do you have any advice?

      These are great discussions ladies. I almost did not choose SOTW for these same reasons. I don't care much for the Greek myths myself. Other religions are part of culture and will be encountered as we go out in our world. For some of these topics you can either talk about it fully, gloss over it quickly, or skip it altogether. This is where we as the teacher can step in and take the lead. For religions we can discuss how there have always been other belief systems throughout history, but how "the gospel is the power of salvation for all who believe." Rom 1:16. I went to private school so I hardly learned of these topics until I was an adult, so it's okay to skip certain things especially if you think it's too confusing right now. But how lucky we are as homeschoolers that our kids can get to learn these things with us and through us, instead of from the world.

    Thanks for sharing! How do you work the STOTW activity hook with multiple kids? Do you make copies or did you buy the PDF? This is my first year doing this cycle so I’m trying to figure out what will work best.
