Hi Chris. I am a retired engineer from the N&W and NS. These loco's were also the worst to be on. They were very stinky and ran terrible. The cab always reeked of urine (urinal was right between the cab seats on the long hood bulkhead) and the black smoke out the stack seemed to always curl around and fill the cab.
I hear people call them ugly I don't think it looks that bad actually. Seems like a nice add for a railroad and not bad for the Pennsy collector. Thanks for the review!
So cool, Chris. The old U-boats were not that bad. I got to run a few, in the early years of my career, but they were basically retired. This is a very good model. An excellent video, as always.
I grew up seeing those U-boats all over the Tampa, FL area in the 70’s on SCL tracks. I don’t mind the general appearance as long as the livery is more prominent. Lionel could have put a much larger PRR keystone logo on the sides. Lipstick on a pig, maybe, but still something different for the layout. Great video as always.
>OLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL@YOU!!!!! That herald is the PROPER size!!!!! This isn't a Menards engine. It ISN'T ugly either!!!!! STP Is the Racer's edge. STUDY THE PROTOTYPE!!!!!!!! GORGEOUS MODEL. Good Job, Lionel!!!!!!!!!
Wow! A 5lb model! Pretty hefty. Thanks for some of the historical background of this locomotive, Chris. Very nice looking engine and a real powerhouse on the layout. Too bad the prototype didn't the mark GE was aiming for.
Is that sound messed up on your recording or is that how the horn sounds? Because I'm very familiar with all those horn selections and they all sound off. Like sort of pulsing, IDK. Even the crew talk sounded off, huh. Nice engine though, I ordered the SP version. I should have it any day now.
The paint color might be considered drab. But I like the industrial look of this U boat. But then again, I like PRR E-44 because it has a very mid century, blocky, industrial look.
“U Boats” are cool, have a GN Blue/Black/White paint scheme I Love. I feel Locomotives looks definitely is one’s opinion. For me it’s cab forward steam and modern era passenger locomotives, they just don’t look good to me
Great video. I love the U Boats. I think U does in fact stand for ugly. I picked up 2 in Conrail paint to go with 2 from the previous run. Of course, the colors don’t match, but can’t wait to see all 4 together.
What makes it ugly is the Lionel brand😂. I have an MTH version and a tmcc version which I converted to mth dcs proto 3, they blow Mr. Lionel out of the water
I had two of these on order. A Penn Central and Conrail. Sadly I ended up canceling well before they were delivered in favor of pre-ordering their new ET44AC.
Arnt those what they call tunnel motors? Yes i agree theyre butt agly i didnt order 1 and prolly never will lol another butt ugly engine in my opinion anyways is the Doodle Bug maby you could do a video or survey on that topic peoples opinion on their least favorite or ugly engine? Also i would like you to do a video if possible on any engines you ordered that turned out you were dissapointed in wether the issue was with the model? Or video on engines you like and engines you dont like just some ideas throw out there thank you for your time and videos
Lionel says this engine is a u28c They were built with 4 axle trucks These models are the u30 series which had 6 axle trucks The u2 series are 2000 horsepower range The u3 series are 3000 horsepower range

U-boats! Have a U-36B in my own fleet, and I like it a lot. Real ones have a unique sound.

Love the old U-Boats and Dash-7s. I've got a Pennsy from the previous U28C run
Great video! I can't decide if I wan't one or not, they sure look unique.
No way! U-Boats and Alco forever!!! A face (Short hood) only a mother would love. These are wonderful brutes!!! 😄
Wow! A 5lb model! Pretty hefty. Thanks for some of the historical background of this locomotive, Chris. Very nice looking engine and a real powerhouse on the layout. Too bad the prototype didn't the mark GE was aiming for.
I like it Chris. Historic Engine!
Great screen shots Chris
I think I have a Santa Fe version of this from my HO era days. Love the weathered hoppers ehh. Ken

Sounded like they were underwater 😂
Not sure, something got screwed on the upload because the local copy sounds fine.
thanks mike
@ that’s strange. At least we know it’s not your train though! 😅

Well done, solid review!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Great video!
That's a cool engine. I like it!
I know, it’s not a beauty queen, but a great model.
“U Boats” are cool, have a GN Blue/Black/White paint scheme I Love. I feel Locomotives looks definitely is one’s opinion. For me it’s cab forward steam and modern era passenger locomotives, they just don’t look good to me
The dark green color looks really nice on video. How's the green look in real life?
is that Skipper Stu? from chuggington?
The u boats are my favorite diesels along side the geep 7s
Looks neat.
Good looking engine

I just found a conrail u30. Picking it up this weekend! It’ll looks good weathered!
U== Universal Series.
U Boats are cool. I had the MTH U36C. Premier I think.
Love all GE locomotives
Too much green for this week, need some burgundy and gold! HTTR!!!
Good smoker!! 👍how’s is it ugly?
It sure is. Just seems to have a face only a mother could love. Great model though!
Only in his mind is that locomotive ugly
WOW look who is Mr Negative now
The u boat is great but has a face only a mother could love!
I had older Legacy version in my collection for a while. Great puller! And absolutely a great horn. But I sold it 😢to help pay for K4.
Ah, that's tough, but a K4 is a great upgrade!
The u28b series had 4 axle trucks
My bad
Your right
Not an engine to get excited about
Gotcha. I had heard similar complaints when they were cataloged but couldn’t understand what I was missing 😂
ok, if it didn't have that raised back it would look good because i FOAM ALCO
Well you got me to Click.
ill have its not ugly to me 😅
I will get one of this ugly things......and I will make it ugglier on the N de M scheme! 😂😂😂😂
i love u boats🥲
They are such utilitarian looking engines. A face only a mom could love but great to have in a collection.
Lionel's 3 track setup is the ugliest in the world.
What makes it ugly is the Lionel brand😂. I have an MTH version and a tmcc version which I converted to mth dcs proto 3, they blow Mr. Lionel out of the water
get off youtube
Be nice to U-Boats :(
It's a great model, However, GE's design team must not have been aiming too high!
It’s ugly, but GE went even uglier with the U50.
Good point!
@@ChrissTrainsandThings No taste. Stick to Menards engines.
I've seen worse steam engines.
what is Ugly about it???
just a face only a mother could love!
@@ChrissTrainsandThings i always thought the face of the Big Boy steam engine had an ugly 'Face"
Chris, ugly yea but it grows on you.
I believe i like to have a Penn Central.
Love it! Ugly?
It's definitely designed for function only, which I can appreciate.,
I was going to try to say something nice, but you are right, it is pretty ugly.
Great model. Ugly design 😂
Ugly?? I've seen worse!!!
The BL2 was a ugly engine
True!
Weird--- not ugly. SD90 is ugly.
Bq23-7 are the ugliest locomotives
I had two of these on order. A Penn Central and Conrail. Sadly I ended up canceling well before they were delivered in favor of pre-ordering their new ET44AC.
I'm excited to see those ET's when they arrive.
Arnt those what they call tunnel motors? Hmmm.. not the ugliest engine I’ve seen. I think those camel backed steam engines aren’t the best looking. To each their own though
An ugly loco is any one of the newer EMD and G.E., that look alike--- THAT is ugly!!
hahaha fair enough!
Lionel says this engine is a u28c
They were built with 4 axle trucks
These models are the u30 series which had 6 axle trucks
The u2 series are 2000 horsepower range
The u3 series are 3000 horsepower range
Except every photo I see online of a “u28c” has three axle trucks, so…
Any U-boat with a "c" in its model designation has 6-wheel trucks, PERIOD.
Love all GE locomotives
