    Super review. I guess the form factor change is good so you can put different firmware on them and be able to tell the radios apart from one another.

    For the case where medium power was more than high power... Did you test spurious emissions on medium? Wonder if they limit high power to manage emissions in the most commonly tested power level.

    Also if you have extra batteries they will drop into the charge base without the radio.

    Absolutely! Not great but better than average; smaller/lighter than the new Baofangs. Though BF’s menu and button layout is better in my experience.

    So the only difference between them is aesthetics?

    Test it for spurious harmonics emission and I'll be a believer if it passes. Plus these inexpensive radios usually have only direct conversion receiver sections.

      I did and mentioned it in the review. Did you watch it before commenting? As for direct conversion receivers, you do realize this is a less than $20 radio, right?

    Sad to see that power levels are still bad with the default firmware. They fortunately are much better in all community ones.

    How can I avoid not getting a knock on the door? Just never send and only receive? Thank you. I am new. From the US. Also is it ok to charge it from the c port?

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  5 місяців тому +1

      If you're just listening, you have nothign to worry about. Most radios in this price range use their USB - C port for charging. Only a few will allow data transfer to and from the radio. Cheers.

      So the manual says the charge base is the better option, the USB c charging is for emergencies. I've charged both ways and it seems the base charges better if that's possible. it takes longer but my battery shows a higher voltage than with the USB c cord.
      With the USB c it stopped charging at 8.3v but the charge base stopped at 8.47.

      @Michigan-Tactical Many budget HTs with USB C charging recommend charging by USB with the radio off. Some explain it has to do with the battery management system not being able to sense when the battery is full when turned on. I don't doubt you measurements, but I don't think a tenth of a volt will make much difference. Charge management via the two methods is likely the root of the difference. Cheers.

    Gadget Talk /or anyone please provide DIY step by step on how to get firmware so I & my daughter can use to open/lock her car door? Dealership & locksmith want over $300.00 to make a new key. I rather use this for under $50.00.
    Which model is best to mod to open door/close should I get?

    The difference it that it can receive down to 18MHz (although 20MHz is advertised). The previous version only went down to 50MHz.
    I did read that alternate bespoke firmware can bring the UV-K5(8) down to 18MHz, but have not tested.

      The real question is is there really any internal difference. The K5(8) can go to 18MHz with Egzumer firmware.
      I'm curious if RX is actually any better on the K5(99)

    YOU DID NOT ADJUST THE METER EACH TIME YOU CHANGED PARAMETERS FOR SWR AND POWER.AND BAND!

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  4 місяці тому +1

      Power readings don't need the adjustments, only SWR. RTFM
