Would like to see more comprehensive video on tasker sequencing in integration with smartthings and home assistant. I think nfc tags are underrated for routines and automation. A blackout (turn Everything off) routine for the spouse that doesn't like talking to a voice assistant is convenient. Near the garage and front door. I know these videos probably take longer than people realize because of how intricate the information is. I love your work.
We’re on tank water being rural and I’ve an nfc next to the tank opening. I measure water levels a couple of time a week in summer with a tape measure and so I’ve set up an iOS shortcut that takes the tape measure distance from rim of tank to top of water, takes it away from the total depth of the tank then calculates the current capacity along with a menu note and date time stamp in a “drafts” file and also txts the result to a list of adults in the household to notify them of current levels which acts as a reminder if we need to conserve water / get a water delivery (if rain isn’t forecast in the near future). The drafts file allows me to graph water usage against another shortcut added via “charty” to display water utilisation over time. Works well 🎉👍. Btw keep up the great work Reid, love the videos. ✅
@Smart Home Solver - there is actual a way to play spotify using NFC tags and the shortcuts app on an iPhone. It is a bit of a workaround but it works though: How am I gonna do it? - copy e.g. the URL of a certain playlist or song - go to your shortcuts app - add action: Open URL (paste your Spotify Link into it) - ad action: play/pause on iPhone more advanced: (add more actions to the steps above) - add action: set volume 0 - add action: set playback destination to: Living Room (or any other airplay devices) - add action: set volume 30 The reason why I first change the volume to 0 and then back up to 30 is that while running the automation, your iPhone plays spotify for a second or two till it changes its playback destination. In order to simply avoid that, I first "mute" the sound on my iphone to then bring it back up again, but then in the living room.
The only issue with your method is the play/pause command doesn't work for the playlist URL, but only plays/pauses the last played song/playlist. It's an issue with iOS though, not your fault. Thanks for the tips!
Other advanced work around would be to expose your own personal API endpoint that scrapes an authenticated spotify session and performs actions for you. I have a few automations setup myself already and it works great!
Hey Reed, I wanted to start playing around with NFC after watching this vid, instead of buying a pack tags, I used the NFC tags in my credit cards with Tasker, worked like a charm!
Greta video! I love NFC tags, and you provided some great automation ideas. I didn't know they made ones that work outside and are waterproof, that is awesome. I use the date/time conditional automation a lot so if the time is before 8pm it runs certain actions and anytime after 8pm it runs my goodnight scene. Nfc tags are super powerful and affordable!
I can't wait for a time when BT (or some other technology) is accurate enough to know when I am in different rooms and trigger my automations and can easily be setup. I don't always have my phone but I always have my Smartwatch on.
@@werra3254 I was not aware of room-assistant, this is pretty cool. I was thinking something more in line with using the Google Homes or Alexa's in a house to track location. Adding 15 - 20 more devices in my house just for location tracking would not be ideal.
Had no idea about these tags, now excited thinking about adding them to places around the home :) Keep up the videos; love learning all about how to make our home smarter
Another great video! Reed your channel is an absolute goldmine mate. Thank you for your efforts! I just bought a bunch of tags due to Home Assistant integration so your video was right on time. Also it's a good excuse to start playing with Tasker again. Ps. Since you mentioned outdoor buttons, I am really impressed with the Xiaomi Aqara button. They are not supposed to be waterproof or anything but I use one as a wireless doorbell in Home Assistant. The button is exposed outside the British weather. Six months now and still going strong!
Can you do a more detailed video on Tasker and NFC tags. I just want to set the tag to turn off and on my smart lights but the whole thing is overwhelming at the moment.
I use an NFC tag to open my garage door from outside. Also to set some lighting scenes that I'm tired of saying "Alexa, Movie Time" and waiting, when I can just set my phone next to it.
This is going to be so awesome for my smart lock!!! My smart lock automatic lock has not worked out for me at all. It takes to long to lock and I'm not leaving my door until I hear it lock. I have it set to auto unlock with the app when I get home. And then the auto lock locks the door before I can get to the door. So ultimately I've had to wait until it locks before I leave and upon returning home have had to unlock my phone then open my smart lock app which then finally unlocks the door. I've been thinking it's just faster to use my keys. Until I saw this video. I do hope this will work with my smart lock. I have the WiFi August smart lock. If so, you just made my day. 😁
The problem with setting up via your phone, is that you have to setup each and every device. This is VERY time consuming, and when you get a new phone, you have to do this all over again. The better way is to keep the tags and automations centrally located on a smart home hub. Sure it's cool that certain versions of phones can store these, but by using one of the various hubs that are out there, one tag can be setup one time along with the automations. Then the user can give access to the people or devices that they want to.
Excellent, the travel time text thing is so cool! Also, I had asked a question on a different video, thanks for NOT answering lol, it led me to your website that not only answered my question, but answered other questions I didn't know I had!
Good video! One that I have is a little simple. I have an nfc tag just outside the bedroom that turns on my bedside light table to 1%, this way I have light when I enter to the bedroom and my girlfriend is already sleeping 😴
This is why i use NFC cards. No need to stick them anywhere. Ok I get it, you bought stickers so you can stick them to wherever they need to be. But what if you wanna place it somewhere else later? You'll end up having to use double sided tape for that. With the cards, there's no need for that.
Another nice and useful video, Reed! It's been years since I've messed with NFC tags but I might just get some going again. BTW, that looks like a Rubik's Cube I could solve!
I have two in my car. One for turning the house alarm on and the other for turning it off. Now we are getting into winter I think I’m going to add turning the lights on and opening the driveway gate to the alarm off one. 😁 love these tags.

Great video 👍🏻 I’m also a massive fan of iOS Shortcuts. Bought a bunch of NFC stickers when support for these were announced last year, but found that it’s just as easy for me to use the shortcuts from the lock screen widgets. Made some pretty advanced ones that I also show on my channel with menus and stuff. While it’s a shame that the phone has to he activated (screen turned on) for the NFC automations to trigger, it’s still a little better than the bluetooth, location and SSID activated ones that cannot run without needing confirmation each time. I wish Shortcuts were available from CarPlay (they were for a short while when they were just introduced). It’s one of those places where they would really be helpful. I agree with your philosophy of “the less I have to open an app, the better” 😊
I love the idea of using NFC tags, so much cheaper then amything else that may do the same, but you have to use a device to scan them with. I know you can do it with apple watch which would be super cool, I wonder if its doable with android smart watches as well. It would be so cool to just bump your hand by one of these amd have the automation trigerred without searching for your phone in your pocket. Kind of like Tony stark's watch from civil war, just without the weaponry 😂
Reed, this is great, thank you! I have a SmartThings home setup with all rooms having smart lights/motion sensors triggered through WebCore and Alexa routines. But there are times that the motion sensor isn't the ideal trigger and I do not want to talk to Alexa.. or Alexa is not in that particular spot in my home. These NFC tags will solve that - Thank you for the WebCore & IOS Shortcuts walk through. I can likely eliminate the Zigbee buttons I have as well! Looking for more automations with these NGC tags, but my favorite is probably Smarttings Virtual Switches to play Alexa Music throughout the house.
Thanks! I did a video similar to what you are describing ua-cam.com/video/-_vtoUmkot4/v-deo.html the order of devices on what to buy is just preference on what you want and budget.
Are you reading my mind? 🤔😅 The last two videos you explained about projects I'm interested in doing in my home. Thanks a lot for the videos, keep up the awesome work!
How many automations can you set to one NFC tag? I work for my local fire department and having to reset my current automations for my work schedule is a drag. Thanks for the great videos as always Reed, keep them coming
Another great video.. really learning a lot from you. I ordered NFC stickers to use with homeassistant... so suppose I have one automation linked with one nfc sticker that will open the garage door. Would I be able to know that whose phone was used to scan the nfc sticker ??? Kindly reply
Would it be possible to trigger reminders with these NFC tags? For example, if I put one on the furnace, that I scan when changing the filter, could that trigger a reminder 3 months after scanning the tag to remind me to change the furnace filter again?
When i first saw the NFC tags in your video's I thought I wanted it. Now that I see how difficult it is to install on android I don't know it anymore. It's not users friendly as I hoped.
For triggering Alexa routines from tasker, look at voicemonkey.io. it creates a virtual doorbell in Alexa which can be 'pressed' by sending a web hook. That device can be used to trigger a routine.
Thanks a lot for this video. I have been thinking of the NFC tags since i watched your last video. Wish android had much easier and user friendly option like Shortcuts. Will have a look into the Tasker. Cheers for the great ideas!
iPhone X is compatible for nfc, but in shortcuts app automation I didn’t even find a single option. It’s also didn’t work on background .Please take this option for iPhone X in further update iOS 14.2 I’m regard waiting for this NFC automation future
I was using NFC tags on my old iphone7 , which didn't have background scanning but as such worked fine. Now I just bought the iPhone 12pro to be able to utilize background NFC but man am I disappointed. It doesn't work at all with the iPhone 12 for any of the keychain or card tags I used before. The only tags that work most of the time are the paper thin sticker tags that come on a roll. It looks like apple forgot to put an antenna in the phone. What a nightmare. . You can get a ( thin) tag to read via shortcuts but it will only trigger 50% of the time or so. Apple you made another expensive POS that just doesn't deliver ( And I am an iPhone user since 2007) . Man am I pissed
I got very excited by the first few minutes of this video, because I had no idea these were available. And then you said it would require iPhone X or newer. I just upgraded to an 8 😭
I really enjoy your videos. Always informative and presented at a level that's comprehensive yet understandable. I'm all in on Google and want to control some of my Google Home routines using NFC tags. Ideally, I'd like to be able to tap an NFC tag and have it run a Google home routine. If this isn't possible, I'd like to be able to issue a series of commands in a linear fashion that Google would be able to interpret, ie. "Turn off kitchen", "Set dining room main light to 30%", "Set living room lights to blue", etc. I tried Home Assistant, but the idea of always having a VM running is annoying. Is there anything you can suggest?
@@SmartHomeSolver Is the NFC Tag just a trigger or does it carry anything needed for the Automation. Another way to ask this, Do I need to setup what the NFC Tag would trigger on each device?

HI, Thank you for sharing your experiences and recommendations, I am a fan of your channel. I would like to know if you know why in IOS 14 on an Iphone 7 the NFC option does not appear within the automations, only ss shows Wifi or Bluetooth.
Hi Reed I am new to NFC. Bought a bunch from Amazon as soon as I saw your video! I was wondering can you program them to work with more then 1 device or they can only be programmed to work with 1 device at a time ? Also can you program multiple things into one NFC tag or they can do I task only? Is there a website or a link where I can learn in detail how to use these tags in different ways or places? Thanks
Hey Reed, I have a problem, since a while, I had been trying to make nfc automations, but the problem si that I want to use google Assistant, I realized that you can do it with iOS 14, but I have an android but I asked a friend to lend me his phone, I realized that if you así something to the Assistant, then it appears in Apple shortcuts, the thing is that as my friend has an IPhone 8, you cant use as a trigger the nfc taggs, so if it isnt a big problem, then I would like you to do it and see if the nfc tag works with an android phone that has the google home app with the same house. I’m also telling it to you because in the video you say that there isnt a google way to do it with an Assistant and I think it could be usefull for you automations and also for show it it in future videos, by the way great video as always. *The good news are that YOU CAN AUTOMATE things WITHOU an IFTTT SUBSCRIPTION* Steps: -Open shortcuts, use as a trigger something like battery, then in apps it appears google Assistant, you cant customize what you want it to do but just select one if the options that appear and finish the shortcut. - Open the Google Assistant app and ask for doing what you want the NFC tag to do (for example: “Ok Google, turn the lights on”) (you hace to do it in the same device that you want to use the shortcuts, so you cant ask it to do it from you google home mini because it wont work) -Then you open again the shortcuts app and make the routine with the nfc tag, it will apear you as a recomendación, what you’ve just asked to the Assistant. (Sorry if my english sucks)
Hey I just tried it out and used Google assistant on my iPhone to change a light. Then I checked my shortcut actions in suggested and it didn’t show up. I will keep trying to get it to work and if I figure it out I’ll let you know. Also your English is great!
Smart Home Solver Maybe it has some issues as it just came with IOS 14, I wish that they solve them in next updates, but I did a little google doc with images, maybe it can help, it doesn’t looks good 😅 but but there it is: docs.google.com/document/d/1DYi-Si3_dgyl_BbRBFRXmf_xkKG2vxFY1zcw4AuVP50/edit
It is very useful and I use them now, too! Thanks! However I do not get the solution for iOS shortcut to trigger Alexa to speak via the echo (like you had). Any advise?
Thanks for watching! What are some of your NFC automation ideas? 🤔
qual app android?
I haven’t heard of that one. I tried a few different apps on android for nfc. There are a lot of options out there.
If only you could set a car's driver seat distance/height so scanning a tag in the car would put the seat in your personal spot.

@Smart Home Solver - there is actual a way to play spotify using NFC tags and the shortcuts app on an iPhone.
It is a bit of a workaround but it works though:
How am I gonna do it?
- copy e.g. the URL of a certain playlist or song
- go to your shortcuts app
- add action: Open URL (paste your Spotify Link into it)
- ad action: play/pause on iPhone
more advanced:
(add more actions to the steps above)
- add action: set volume 0
- add action: set playback destination to: Living Room (or any other airplay devices)
- add action: set volume 30
The reason why I first change the volume to 0 and then back up to 30 is that while running the automation, your iPhone plays spotify for a second or two till it changes its playback destination.
Thanks for the tips!

could you do a full in depth video on how to do the locations and drive time to someone from android in tasker
Hi Reed,
great video. Worth mentioning that NFC is not available in iPhone Automations for models prior to XR and XS.
iPhone X is compatible for nfc, but in shortcuts app automation I didn’t even find a single option. It’s also didn’t work on background .Please take this option for iPhone X in further update iOS 14.2 I’m regard waiting for this NFC automation future
Same but for my iPhone 8+ No option for NFC under shortcuts app, I can’t create my own.
How can i setup up the NFC tags on iphone X, doesn’t have the NFC on the shortcuts..
I just upgraded to an 8 😭
Oh dang. Well there are third party apps that you might be able to use. The iPhone 8 has nfc but apple doesn’t use it with the shortcuts app.
Is tasker compatible with tuya devices that require no hub?
Is there anything you can suggest?
nice, thank you for video
Would love too see nfc with apple watch
Great tip. Loved the video. Can you use one nfc tag for multiple phones?
Thanks! Yes you can use one tag with multiple phones.
@@SmartHomeSolver Is the NFC Tag just a trigger or does it carry anything needed for the Automation. Another way to ask this, Do I need to setup what the NFC Tag would trigger on each device?
Jesus V good question, never thought of that
@@JesusVillanueva I am just learning nfc recently and also wondering about what can a strange do in front of my NFC door. Anything to worry about or it is completely secure?
@@leopoldomolina1763 it has to be setup on your device in general. you can set them up to give off information to any old stranger but in general it is just a trigger to your reading device.
HI,
Thank you for sharing your experiences and recommendations, I am a fan of your channel.
*The good news are that YOU CAN AUTOMATE things WITHOU an IFTTT SUBSCRIPTION*
Steps:
-Open shortcuts, use as a trigger something like battery, then in apps it appears google Assistant, you cant customize what you want it to do but just select one if the options that appear and finish the shortcut.
- Open the Google Assistant app and ask for doing what you want the NFC tag to do (for example: “Ok Google, turn the lights on”) (you hace to do it in the same device that you want to use the shortcuts, so you cant ask it to do it from you google home mini because it wont work)
-Then you open again the shortcuts app and make the routine with the nfc tag, it will apear you as a recomendación, what you’ve just asked to the Assistant.
Reed. How about Smart Life app. I use it to run all my devices.
One more thing, how about macros? Is there a way to do that using that?
Using my iPhone 12 how can I use and NFC tag to share my WiFi password
It is very useful and I use them now, too! Thanks! However I do not get the solution for iOS shortcut to trigger Alexa to speak via the echo (like you had). Any advise?
