    I don't get why if its possible to make one, why can't I buy something like this? Imagine waking up at 5.30am on a frosty morning.
    You have something like this mounted in your car thats set with a timer. Or even better remote controlled by your phone or Alexa.
    You get into your nice warm defrosted car and drive to work and just unclip and recharge the battery when you get there!
    Surely a product like that would sell millions ?

    Awesome I love this heater👍🏼, I'm trying to make an insulated stick on case using armaflew with 12v heat pads on the inside to help keep my pack warm, the cold is making a big difference in a 1.5kwh battery so i was thinking what's 50watts of heat when I'll gain 20% range👍🏼

    Very smart idea & build, congrats! Can you tell us for how long can this heater can be work with one full charged battery at the first intensity level? Many thanks

    Love this, goes to Aldi buys a decent battery then proceeds to hack it apart to find out what’s inside lol.

    Sweet. I was wondering about a motorbike powered fan heater. Add tubes to warm a jacket and helmet to stop the bloody visor fogging in the cold.

    just in time Andy, I am making a bank of paralleled 36v macallister/spears and jackson/qualcast batteries, stepping down to 13.8v via a 30a dcdc step down and running all my gen1 Nissan leaf 12v car accessories off of it, such as heated seats, kids tablets, phone and potentially one of these ptc heater elements. all in a bid to keep the load off of the dcdc converter of the car and retain some battery capacity in the traction pack for pushing the car down the road. range is suffering hard at the moment due to the cold. I have a plastic printed design to get access to the battery terminals as I use them for my ebikes with is why I own a few of them. should be able to add about 1.5kwh to the car for a bit of extra heat.The objective is to get the car down south at winter time but staying comfortable.

    That's just awesome! How long the battery would last on a single pct heater?

    If you haven’t done a video which completes this project with safety features and is could be used accordingly within a small space, could you continue to complete it and include how long the heater can be used on a full charge. From reading subscribers comments, they are interested in it’s progress. thanks

    I'm curious why you went w/ a little fan instead of making something like the seat heater or more like a coat that could rake a battery pack and keep you warm... Just an idea.

    i try to use in camping for roof top tent . The good side is that everything works and it heats up fairly quickly. The bad side is that the whole cable heats up too much and in two minutes It started to smell burned plastic in my car, I don't think I will use it. :((((

    Interesting about the battery take apart. I always thought if usibg a couple of tool batteries as an ebike battery. Esp since many ebike batteries are 36v and those tool batteries are 18v...rig one up that works with a common battery and you begin to make ebike batteries interchangeable. Almost like what colt did with pistols back in the 1860s?

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  4 роки тому +1

      Very true. These batteries are ideal for ebikes and cheap too. The only issue is adding a decent BMS so you can charge them on the bike as one pack and ride knowing that you won’t over discharge them. I will be covering adding a BMS to that battery in a video soon.

    This is exactly the kind of thing I'd like to find to take camping in the winter. (Scottish Highlands) A small low powered heater, just enough to take the chill off rather than actually heat the tent, that could be used with one of the new micro-electric generators. Ideally with some kind of logic which could see it run on and off automatically for X number of minutes per hour as it obviously wouldn't last too long continuously. Unfortunately, I'm nowhere near intelligent enough to build something like that myself!

    Ever thought of making a heat pump ? Resistive heaters need kilowatts of energy to warm a decent area you need to improve efficiency for it to be truly portable good effort though it's bloody cold out lol.

    You mention that there is nothing commercially available, seems to be the case. I do wonder if it is because customers can be too unrealistic in their expectations. People who buy tiny space heaters complain all the time that they can't warm up entire rooms with them. I've heard people ask if there are USB powered heaters.... people simply don't seem to grasp how much electricity it takes to produce heat.
    Thanks for your experiments.

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  4 роки тому

      Yeah for sure it’s true and for a lot of people 30 minutes of heat probably isn’t enough. I though about marketing it as a portable demister, it still ends up quite expensive as you need a powerful battery...and yeah your right about customer expectations for these types of things.

    It’s a shame you can’t wire the heater into the main battery. Something like wired so that whilst the car is charging, it runs at a lower power just enough to take the chill out from inside the car

    Do you find Andy that you need to seal the car better to retain the heat or have you done this already and I missed it?

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  4 роки тому

      yeah the Twizy can't really be sealed but you can improve it, I added some rubber insulation in the door shuts and also insulation in the footwell as lots of cold air comes through the front.
