  • I answered a call to go and take over the repair of a 1955 Morris Minor that needed the engine and gearbox installed and finished off. This was a half finished project and it turns out that taking over someone elses work is a bit of a mission!
Here's the restoration series of my Morris Minor so far:

Awesome. Just found my late fathers 1947 Morris Minor and Morris Eight Pitman’s owners manual. Mint condition. Wish I had his vehicle from those years, lol. What memories.

Gosh, I love your videos. I'm watching this one in December of 2023, and am hoping that you produce some new videos soon. For everything you do.

I always get a extra big dollop of job satisfaction out of fixing and finishing off something that somebody else has started but has not been able to complete, for whatever reason. Big pat on the back Johnathon, you have done a good job there. Looking forward to seeing it driving on the road soon.

Thanks David, it was a satisfying job. I'm looking forward to the test drive and a good look around the car too

I would have checked the carbon clutch release bearing before bolting the gbx to the engine.

Nice work. Sucks looking for nuts n bolts when someone else took it apart

Thanks. Yeah that's the only downside to this project. Missing little pieces and nuts and bolts. I'll get there

Great job Jonathan! Cute little car ☺️ Are you thinking now that you'd like to chop the roof off yours? 🙈😂

No roof means less rust I guess 🤣 thanks Niamh, this has been a fun little project

Yes a very sweet little car there, now I may be wrong but I have a vague memory that the "proper" convertible had some extra reinforcement at sill level to compensate for the lack of a roof structure, which may account for the added flex of this car what do you think. Best regards from Ireland.

This is only the second Morris Minor I have ever worked on and I know very little about them. I would have thought that a factory convertible would be slightly stronger. Cheers

Can't believe you didn't fix the dodgy gearbox first

Nice but the exhaust seems to be blowing , did you put sealant on the mated surfaces of the exhaust manifold ?. Regarding the body flexing , if it was originally a saloon then it should have the body strength plates fitted that the factory convertible had .

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  3 роки тому

      There was no exhaust 🤦‍♂️

That 4-headlamp front end had me puzzled. The grille with the embedded lights is the original design, the fenders/wing mounted ones came later. The two styles seem to have co-existed in the early 1950s, but not on the same car. The hybrid must have been a custom job. Maybe there's a Minor geek around who could cast some light on the matter?

It was a chaps retirement project before he passed away. It's far from standard and I'll give you a good look at all features when we go for a drive

Well I am a Minor geek as I rebuilt my first one aged 14 years old, and worked on these great cars ever since. On this car someone has fitted a lowlight front panel from the series MM which was made from 1948 to 1950. After that date the headlight were raised to the wings to comply with U.S.A. laws. From 1951 until 1955 the Minor used what we call a "cheese grater" grill with sidelights in the grill/front panel. This car in the video is a series 2 split-screen of 1955. and should have had the slatted grill as used in all later Minors. The engine that the car should have had as original would have been an OHV 803cc unit with smooth case gearbox and long gearstick. The unit taken out was a 948cc engine with the original long gearstick smoth case 803cc gearbox. The engine put in was a 1098cc unit with the backplate, flywheel and clutch from a 948cc engine. You have to do this as the 1098cc flywheel and clutch are to big to go into the smooth case gearbox. Also the pressed steel 948cc engine backplate is slightly narrower than the1098cc cast steel backplate which gives better clutch adjustment.

I think that the Minor is earlier than 1955 with that dash in it and should have had the 803cc engine when new.
The 948cc is a much better engine.

It shows as first registered in New Zealand in January 1955 and having an 803cc engine. It could have been registered overseas earlier.
