  • Does your Mercedes G wagon have a starter issue? Changing the starter on a G wagon is very doable for the DIY mechanic. The tools you need are a basic Torx socket set and ratchets. I used my multi socket set to get the job done. My friend took this truck to several mechanics and even the dealer to figure out what was wrong. After changing the battery last year and still dealing with the same issue. He brought the truck to me. After some quick research. I found that many G550 Mercedes have bad starters. Replacing the starter solved the problem. Maybe it will also solve yours! Good luck!

    You’re a real one, man!!! I had some slow starts the other day on my 2015, and it finally kicked the bucket once I got home. Changed out both batteries to no avail. About to order a new starter on Monday.
    Thanks for the DIY! You’re awesome!

    Thanks for the great video. This gave me confidence to do this job myself. I learned the following that might be helpful to others who try this:
    1. After removing battery negative cable, remove the 2 electrical connections on starter first. My 2013 G550 had a plastic/rubber cover on the larger connection. Pry that off first to expose the nut.
    2. Remove the heat shield from the starter while it is still in the engine. There are two small nuts (10mm I think) that hold the large heat shield piece in place. Once you take that off, you can leave the clamp portion on or remove. Works either way. This gave me much more room to maneuver the starter to get it out of the engine. I also installed the new starter motor with the heat shield removed and that made it easy to get back in place. I then installed the heat shield clamp and large piece with the starter already located in correct position. This took a couple of tries because you have to mate the clamp portion to the large shield portion, but I got it. Once nuts torqued down, heat shield did not move/rotate at all.
    3. My Universal socket set skipped from 10mm to 12mm, no 11MM. After a trip to 4 different auto parts/hardware stores and still no 11MM e-torx socket, I used a 7/16” SAE E-Universal socket on the 2 large mounting bolts and it worked it just fine. I could have saved an hour of driving around if I had just tried that first! Use 11MM if you have it, but if you don’t, 7/16” SAE should work for you.
    4. I did this job without lifting the truck, but it was a tight spot. Probably would have been more comfortable to work with truck lifted, but it can be done without lifting.
    5. If you first crank it and get a whining sound after starting/running, turn it off then restart. The first start after installing, I heard a continuing whining sound that made me think starter was not disengaging like it should once truck is started. I turned it off, restarted, and didn’t hear the whine again. I repeated start several more times and no more whine so all seems good.
    Great video, thanks again. Saved me a ton by doing it myself. Here’s a link to the NEW Bosch starter I installed (looks like one installed as well). $175 plus tax and shipped free. Got it about 3-4 days after ordering. Dealership quoted around $1500 for this job and that was to install a Remanufactured starter, not new. www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/433805/Starter-Motor-New-0001107046/

    Thanks for this video. It was helpful. Anyone who owns a G Wagon needs to know how to change out the window regulator because it is only a matter of time before it breaks. The cable spool is poorly made. I think I’ve had to change out 5 or 6 in two trucks over the past 15 years. A couple recommendations for everyone: 1) label the wires and connection points (1,2,3,4,5) with a piece of tape when you disconnect them. My recent spool break occurred on a Saturday afternoon. I couldn’t order the parts until Monday and didn’t get them until Wednesday afternoon. A long time to remember which wire connects where. 2) The zip ties would not fit so I braided some wires and tightened with a dowel rod to secure the window until the parts arrived. 3) Order 12 door card clips when you order the window regulator. They are going to break when you pry the card off and the rear doors need 12. Make sure all 12 holes are clear or you will get to be frustrated when you are juggling the door with one hand to protect the wiring and the card will not seat 4) Place a piece of tape on the handle side of the door direct behind the clips. It makes it easier to line up the clips and holes at the top of the door and shows you where to press at the bottom and sides to ensure it is seated properly. 5) For my 2015 I needed to a T25 to remove the screws not a T30. Don’t try to remove them with a flathead or a hex! Thanks again!

    where is the starter located? Did you have to elevate the vehicle to get to the starter?

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  4 роки тому

      Seun Bello the starter is located on the passenger side of the engine. You could probably do the job with out jacking up the vehicle. If you have some ramps that would definitely give you a little more space to work.

    Hello, pls tell me how u got it out? Been trying for hours now..

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  2 роки тому

      The starter will come out once you orient it a certain way. It is kinda hard to explain but you got to turn it and slide it out.

    Incredible result of German engineering: military truck with 57K miles already needs a new starter. How did Germans convinced the World they can build cars?

      I’ve replaced far more Toyota and Honda starters vs Mercedes but hey pick your poison.
