- In this episode, I'll address the most common problems and issues with this model. 2002 - 2018 year of made G-Wagon
Video is not only for entertainment but should also help those that are about to buy one of these cars to help them what to be aware of while buying, and what to be prepared for during ownership.
Prices for parts and labour are expected to drop with time and are actual at the time of making this video and will vary by country.
As engines are the same for various models I have used video from episode about GL models. Full video can be found here:

Disclosure:
The car in this video is not your car nor your friends car. Problems and issues mentioned, are statistically the most common on this brand and model of the car. If you didn't experience any of them, I'm honestly happy for you and you are one of the happy owners, but chance that these issues will occur in future is very high.
Video is made for educational purposes in good faith to help budget for possible repairs.
Gotta say, this is first time I've seen someone use their kitchen as a workshop. You sir, are a legend.... Cheers!
you made my day
nr 1. turbo chargers coolant feed pipes. nr 2. valve stems
Yeah very very legends 😂😂
😂😂😂
Only video about this car that addresses ACTUAL problems I want to know about.
The German car manufacturers just can’t build a gasket that lasts, it’s ridiculous. Source: BMW VW tech for 15yrs. All of the rubber they use gets brittle way too fast. Why not use Viton like the japanese?
God after i pay finish my college loan i’ll get a 2015 G Wagon , they are so beautiful but i hope i get the money to maintain it for weekends... Currently have a 2013 Mustang gt
Well done, congratulations for your wonderful effort. Thank you - and I have subscribed!
my instrument cluster is going off like a Christmas tree. replaced the SAM. Worked fine for 3 weeks and did it again. I think it’s because I went through a car wash. Any experience removing the dash and replacing the windshield wiper seals? Think that’s where the water is leaking in?
While I think the G wagon is pretty lit, I met an owner who was arrogant as fuck
Used reliability stats to roast him
I would drive one just once if I was offered the chance, but I wouldn’t get one because it’s probably very expensive to regularly maintain
Plus that arrogant son of a bitch too
Dont let one SOB make your opinion on otherwise nice car
2002 g500 have alot of problems ?
I found one but 1 window doesn't roll up and seats don't move. Is that expensive to fix?
Go for used of aftermarket parts if you are on budget
Thank you so much for this video, very useful for me and much appreciated. Keep it up please
thanks for the videos and the info! For the model years 2002-2012, what do you think are the most reliable diesel engines out of the 270, 320 and 350?
320
Great video !!! Which year is the most reliable ? and you would recommend ?
Basically a car for a Mercedes b mechanic ... I went with the Lexus lx 570.
Crap, in a totally different vehicle ! It doesn't have a handcrafted BiTurbo V 8 that has 577 hp. It is for real Man !
Hey man thank you for the great video!!! I can't find what's a problem with mine one. It's 2017 right hand has 20k on the clock. It has loud clicking sound when steering on the parking lot on the very slow speed. Seems like noise is coming from steering box. What can be a problem? Thank you!
Perhaps CV axle but seems unusual for such a new car. Usually happens at an older age or higher mileage
Cup holder for $100. What a scam. Love my Mercedes though. Good way I’ve saved money is to buy replacement components from automotive scrap yards.
Oh thats nothing. Injectors o-ring kit is $300. Those little rubber o-ring seals.
@@MechAdventures holy shit lol
Get to know someone with a 3D printer. A part like that can be easily manufactured at home.
Basically an overpriced pos.
Great video. Just bought a 2011 G550 with 80K miles. All service has been done every year from new (A & B services). Needs rear main seal replaced and transfer case leak repaired. Would you trust an Indy shop with these jobs, or just the dealer? Also how do you feel about overall reliability? With proper service, can I make it to 200K relatively easily?
Indy with good reviews will be good enough
@@MechAdventures thanks so much! How about overall reliability? I sold my 13 LX570 and got this. Had minimal issues with the LX.
Benz is not a lexus, gl has definitely more issues. Reliability wise its average car.
@@MechAdventuresupdate- Indy removed transmission and found the RMS bone dry… cost me $1100 in labor.
Mercedes identified the leak as an oil separator leak and charged me $230 parts and labor to fix it.
Just about to hit 100K and the 11 G wagon has been reliable, thankfully.
Just did the trans service today at MBZ. Will do diff and transfer case service on my own as it’s easy enough.
If I want a softer ride than factory g550, what shocks do you recommend?
@@hazemgiballi thanks for update. Shocks wont do much to soften the ride, its matter of coil springs
So I've owned a 13 g63 amg for 10 months. It has around 53,000 miles.
For amg models, the heat is truly detrimental to the engine plastics.
So far I have changed the secondary oil pan gasket, passenger valve cover, which once removed showed that I needed to change o rings for Injectors.
Ours has had a bit of a death wobble from 50 to 60 mph, so I will be doing the steering dampner as well.
Currently I see that both turbos has a bit of a seaping issue from the turbo seals. Passenger side has a drip every now and again.
I am also noticing rust alongside the windshield in two very small areas.
Needless to say I love the car. But even when buying used and low mileage it's definitely no short of a money pit.
But, it is worth the maintenance. I hope it keeps running well lol
Where is the rust on the windshield?
@@AA-vr8ez it usually happens on the bottom two corners under the rubber lining. Water accumulates there and you'll notice your paint bubble ever so slightly in that area
Hello, Im looking to buy a 2014 G550 5.5L 7AT with 120k miles. Is that a good motor?
Wow, this might be the perfect video. Everything I needed to know to steer clear of this damn thing. I’ll stick with Land Cruisers.
Land Cruisers from 1990s are cool looking trucks. The later ones are fugly mommy trucks and don't compare to Gwagons very well.
@@anonymousonlineuser6543 lol, ok.
I am in the process of buying a really low millage 2006 G55 AMG, since this engine/auto combo is the most reliable I was told. But is the build quality of these vehicles quite poor? Have read about serious rust issues, bottom of the front windshield, door sills, door hinges, top of the back door, sun roof, to name a few, and also cracked Paint... Am a car entusiast and collector, with both sportcars and 4wd trucks, have Toyota Landcruiser, HDJ 80, one Isuzu Dmax Arctic Truck AT35, one Nissan Patrol Arctic Truck, all of them very reliable, so maybe I am spoiled🤔
@@bikerman6907Hey did you end up buying the G wagon? If so, any regrets? 🥵 Thanks
@@Natak222 hi Yes I bought a Mint conditioned G55 AMG in May 2021, with only 30000 km/ 18400 miles on the clock. It looks like it just came out of the factory. No regrets.😍😍👍 A REAL 4x4 with REAL character, and an awesome exhaust sound and it goes like stink!. HIGHLY recommendable😃😎
4:07 JUMP LIKE BULL! Love it.
Where are you located in Canada?
Calgary
2005 113.000 miles 5 dealerships bought it to drive it for themselves its whole life carfax extensive record 40k i honestly wanna keep it forever until im ready to buy a new new one, should i do it? i wanna trade in my 2017 range rove vogue its lovely but its too early for me to be spending 100k on vehicle i wanna downsize price wise take my little loss and retain my 40k with the g wagon n put rest in market
Parádne videjko , dík moc
A lot of these issues are problems that will not leave you stranded. Not bad when compared to the other Euro luxury SUVs which can leave you stranded with coolant leaks or air suspension failures.
Yes they can leave you stranded. I’ve had two fuel injectors fail on me in the middle of the road & door lock actuator broke. Couldn’t shut my door and had to get towed twice
yessss
Loved your video! Thanks for all the great info. Do you still drive it?
And I thought i could afford a car like this 🤡
try BMW 7er
I just bought a 2017 G63 with only 37,500 kilometres and it was leaking oil in multiple locations! Both valve cover gaskets, upper timing cover gasket and the cam plug rear of bank 2. Thankfully the dealer I bought it from is footing the bill to have these leaks fixed because it’s apparently 29 - 30 hours labour all together. Have you heard of these gaskets leaking very often on the 5.5 Litre? Do you know what might cause these failures on an engine with relatively low kilometres like this? Thanks for your video, very informative. Liked and subbed 👍🏻
Yes those leaks are common. One of reasons may be lack of regular oil changes and clogged pcv.
Really beautiful video new subscriber fro the channel can you please give specific year and model the start make the reliable ones
Best regards Romeo
Passenger seat moves forward even when you are pressing button to go backwards. Is this a big fix? I’ve had mine 15 years and I want to replace with the same vehicle ; I still love it but think it’s better I keep it and fix the small issues than try and find one especially with it’s popularity now. Thanks for the video.
Where are you from?
Loved ur accent ☺️
(Not sarcsm)
What is your opinion regarding reliability of models 2022 onwards G63 or G500?
way more electronics, that can brake down
Hi mech...if you had to pick a year model, which one would you buy?
After 2006
@@MechAdventures why? styling or reliability?
Hi - I have G500 2002 and I have issues with my transfer case not working properly. Have you seen that before and any idea how to fix it?
You cheapest and fastest bet would be reputable local shop.
Hi, I’m I’m concerned about the sunroof seal in my 2011 G55. Would you suggest a body shop or dealership for this? Or I could try myself if I can get the part.
you can try yourself its not difficult
GOOD VIDEO !!
hi. thanx for the video .
do you have a repair shop ?
I really like this guy! He seems very honest
I am in the process of buying a really low millage 2006 G55 AMG, since this engine/auto combo is the most reliable I was told. But is the build quality of these vehicles quite poor? Am used to Toyota Landcruiser, so maybe I am spoiled🤔
Benz is definitely not toyota. Reliability wise
@@MechAdventures thanks for quick reply👍. The vehicle I am gonna look at, 2006 G55 AMG, has done only 30000 km, imported from Japan. According to the sales guy it is almost like a new car. I'll find out all about it on Tuesday though.
Brilliant!
G class is so Boss
What about g63 ? Is it m157 is so bad ?
very similar
Very nice video buddy.
if you only bought 4runner
:]
G500 vs. G55 AMG. Both has the same problems?
Yes, plus G55 can have issue with supercharger clutch
@@MechAdventures Thank you for the info👍
why am i thinking the Toyota land cruiser is more reliable?
They are but they dont have status as Kardashians drives Gwagon
@@MechAdventures lol
How about the door open:closed annoyance? I cannot figure out Where the sensor is located.
Its in the latch mechanism
Do I need to remove the door panel to find it? Thanks for your response.
@@xband yes
Good stuff man!
Cool video
Great video 👌
6:51 damn look at that sound ,it's worth having it :)
"LOOK" at that "SOUND"
Thanks for the video. You say after 06 for the most reliable, is there a point where they stopped making the 5 speed auto? I understand it will be a millstone but I want one. How about the pre nav screen 2000-2001 or earlier 80s 90s W460/461?
Trans changed in 2010/2011 , prior 2006 have different electronics
yeah,... ill stick to my lx570.
meh
Pussy Car.
