Good interview. Never released he did a storm in heaven. Definitely a favourite and a pity they lost some of the atmospheric sound later on but every album a classic in its own right.
Wish he talked more about the recording and production of The Stone Roses. Seems like he thought it was good, but he didn't think it was just amazing! I mean, I think it has so many sounds that define the Roses' sound and a lot of it may be the band, but a lot of it is also Leckie's production and contribution.
The stuff he worked on over the 1979 - 1995 period pretty much reflects the stuff I “discovered”, long before much of it had its subsequent reputation. Seems he was orchestrating the whole thing! My, how music has changed without that kind of curatorial presence.
When he mentions "Making it sound a little mysterious...you don't really get it on the first listen" at 18:45 when describing the first Stone Roses album, this is really demonstrated in the 2nd half of "I Am The Resurrection" where you can hear Ian Brown's ghostly wails in the last 90 seconds.
I love the story about lawrence in david cavanagh's creation book lawrence backstage at glastonbury trying to not get mud on his new shoes , looking really glum ! . Someone goes up to him " hi lawrence , how are you doing ?" Not good says lawrence . " what's up mate?" " i thought there would be cottages for the pop stars" !!! Ha ha
Might be ok production wise but I think Wonderful and Frightening World is considered one of the weakest albums from The Fall from that era/lineup. 'Nation' and 'Bend Sinister' are fantastic though
The Rose's claimed John wanted too much money to do the 2nd album. Truth is they had no songs and John was in demand. They may have saved in the long run as Leckie would have whipped things into shape faster than anyone. That awful intro would have been cut to. What is that all about? He did XTC 25 o'clock too which I love.
For his work on the Roses debut and A Storm in Heaven alone he should be made a Saint.
Really interesting interview. Such a likeable, warm and humble man and what a C.V.!

Great man. Worked on two of the greatest albums of all time by The Roses and Radiohead.
