    I wrote my dissertation on Bach and I still am not even close to having him figured out. He had the biggest brain and the biggest heart.

    *_What a remarkable animation!_*
    By just simultaneously listening _and_ seeing the animation, this _pretty complex_ composition of J. S. Bach became _almost fully transparent_ to me! And that by watching it just _once!_
    What I see, is that different repeating graphical elements correspond to different repeating musical structures. Up till now, when I listened to this music, I 'did not get it'. That is, I did not _feel_ what Bach was saying.
    By 'lifting out' various elements by giving them their own graphics, I _now_ could understand _much more_ about this piece of music.
    You do not only show that you can make beautiful animations. In this animation, you also show a clear understanding of what music is about!
    _Very well done, Stephen!_

    I still think this is one of the greatest pieces ever made for solo keyboard.

      Except it was not written for solo keyboard and you have to arrange if you want it to fit in your hands.

      @@DanielSilva-gc4xz Except it was written for solo keyboard. It is the fulfillment of the Prussian king's wish for a keyboard fugue in 6 parts on the king's theme. It's composed in the style of Frescobaldi. The keyboard performer in this recording did not have to rearrange it to fit his hands.

      @@DanielSilva-gc4xz You will find many recordings on UA-cam of this 6-part keyboard fugue ("ricercar") being played exactly as it was composed on harpsichord, fortepiano, piano and organ. I am astonished that this is a revelation to you.

    Nice detail at 0:35, I am expecting it to go there but it doesn't and the animation shows that expectation and surprise

    Have you ever experimented with visualizations using Schenkerian analysis?
    Something like different colours for different heirarchical levels, and different shades of the colour for different linear progressions (intervals. between chord tones).
    Recently some datasets in various formats have been made available (e.g. PB Kirlin, Stephen Ni-Hahn) .

    One man cannot have all the ideas of musical possibilities but Bach. How could he even come up with all of this. I still don't get it because in an industrial point of view, it doesn't even make sense. If not because of the love he had for god, none of this could have had happened

    Is this the six part fugue based on the royal theme that Bach composed when he got back to Leipzig? Or is this the six part fugue based on Bach's own theme (related to the royal theme?) that Bach improvised that night?

    • @leonhardeuler6811

      Bach never improvised a six part fugue, he improvised a 3 entitled "ricecar a 3".

      @@leonhardeuler6811 Yes, but after that he said that because of the stated reason, he will improvise a six voice fugue with his own theme. Then, he went back home and wrote Ricercar a 6. I read this in a book somewhere, so it may not be true. But that's how it was as far as I know.

      @@bsku0765 That is not how i was taught it... Bach rarely even wrote 6 part fugues, I doubt he could just improvise one (the C sharp- minor from book 1 is the only 5-part fugue in the set, there are no 6 voiced).
      I was told that Bach improvised only a 3 part fugue and went home to compose a voiced.

    Absolutely gorgeous both visually and musically. The instrument sounds "out of tune" to my ear, and I wonder if that's because it uses a tuning different from what is typical for a modern piano?

    • @smalin
      @smalin  3 роки тому +2

      Could be. If particular notes sound too high or too low, it’s most likely the temperament. If it’s a more general impression, it might be the timbre.

    • @Kaiveran
      @Kaiveran 3 роки тому +1

      It's likely played in a circulating temperament (a slightly irregular tuning that can be used as 12et, but gives chords and scales subtly different "colors" on different keys; this is typically what is meant by "well-tempered")
