Subscribe for more of this type of voice: the oktavist is a type of voice used in Russian liturgical and folk music. These singers sing roughly an octave below the bass range. The point of this video, however, is not to demonstrate the sheer depth of these voices, but rather their power. Any bass can croak these notes into a microphone, but what sets these voices apart is their ability to perform notes like this over a choir, to a large audience, with absolutely no amplification. I have here featured only Russian oktavists, but there are many deep, powerful basses from other countries as well. Explore my channel to see a few!
The lowest note for each oktavist is:
Kovcheg oktavist (Pavel Myakotin), Ab1 at 0:15
Kochetov, G1 @ 0:45
Vishniakov, B1 @ 1:00
Michalyk, B1 @ 1:21
Kurilov, Ab1 @ 1:53
Ort, B1 @ 2:18
Miller, Bb1 @ 2:37
Pasyukov, C#2 @ 3:03
Kruglov, Bb1 @ 3:28
Oktavist of Peter & Paul Fortess (Alexey Gdeshinsky), Ab1 @ 3:48
Zlatopolsky, C2 @ 4:09
Kovcheg Oktavist (Pavel Myakotin), F#1 @ 4:39
For the lowest unamplified note ever recorded, see the video on my channel of Zlatopolsky hitting a double low C (C1) singing Prayer for the Dead with the Don Kosaken Choir.
Italians being obsessed with tenors and high pitches, Russians were like "fyack this, we better bass, dis is russia"
Now i can't think the name "Russia" without this bass.
Why did I hear this in a Russian accent?
Lmao same 😂😂
that's funny because Italian basses, as well as Russian tenors, are excellent too

King Louis XIII had a splendid bass voice. King Louis XIII could very easily hit a C1 note since he was an oktavist. 🎭🩰🎨
I love the clip of Mikhail Zlatopolsky, he's just like, "Lemme get this shit over with" and then hits that ground-shaking note.

I wish some operas used this voice type, it's amazing.
Who's gonna write some Discworld-themed operas with Death as an oktavist?
AndersWasRight Late, but the part of Ravan in Ayodhya by Somtow reaches down to an A1. The part was written for John Ames, an operatic basso profundo.
Discworld!!!😃
I would if i can lol
The late great Ian Richardson was definitely more in the Baritone range.
There are no characters evil enough in the operas to use this register

Conductor: What is your lowest note?
Paul Michalyk: Yes.
The young oktavists get me excited, their voices will only get deeper and more refined with age and the ones on display here are arguably the strongest at deeper tones already which amazes me. Also great to see a younger generation preserve such an amazing musical tradition, thank god for the Eastern Orthodox church.

I looked at this channel's website where it talks about these Oktavists and others. That's Aleksandr Ort and it appears he does not like to solo. There's only one such recording.
Okay, the jokes in this comments section are hilarious, but I love these oktavists. Their vocal power is amazing. My parents used to listen to Russian Orthodox choirs when I was a kid, and me and my siblings always thought the low voices were so cool and scary. We tried imitating them, which was not a good idea as I'm a girl and my lowest is C3! :D
TheMusicZone Good
Probably still lower than I can go without scratching my throat and I'm a man :(
Only problem with having an Oktavist / Basso Profundo voice such as I do is that I can never get used to the fact that people around me would always notice the first thing is my voice. Its most likely just me as people in my age group, sometimes older has never in their lives has ever heard a voice like the oktavists here despite me being only able to reach G1 forcibly (A1 is the most comfortable low note I have and in the morning F#1’s the lowest I can go as of now). But my voice still has some more maturity to go through so we shall await how it will go. :)
C3 is amazing! good job
Steven Criscione That's seriously discounting tenors and countertenors.
Paul Michaelyks and Vladimir Pasyukov's voices are so defined and low pitched that you can hear the harmonic overtones, it's the first time I've heard that in conventionally sung notes and not tuvan throat singing
some of the lowest notes are so low you can hear harmonic overtones much like Kargyraa.
Modimus Prime yea, are like kargyraa
I came here for this exact comment.
that’s just due to the certain spacing they have and where their tongue is in their mouths
@@___Bruh__ well yes.. But this happens with every voice. It can be altered intentionally buf it is primarily more noticeable with their voices due to the fact that the fundamental frequebcy is so low that our ears actually hear the overtones better/louder than the fundamental itself
I've found it to be helpful to bring out certain overtones to boost my volume. Been practicing the "normal" overtones used in throat singing and the ones I think I'm using for bass are a lot more subtle and have a different placement.
Even though a Greek oktavist is my favorite when it comes to him as a celebrity or as an Internet personality, when it comes to musical talent Zlatopolsky is my favorite! He is a legend and will live on forever!
Being a convert to Orthodox Christianity, I still haven't gotten used to the sheer power in these men's voices.

I'm really impressed by how clearly you can hear the harmonic overtones in that long note at 1:37. They are so clear it almost sounds like Mongolian throat singing.
Yeah it's also one specific harmonic. It's a C#5 (The 9th harmonic of B1) and it's approx. a bit over 125 times (Decible wise) louder than the actual fundamental (B1). The reason is probably, that the mic is bad and doesn't have a flat frequency response and a rather large response spike at probably around 550hz, making that overtone stand out much higher than the rest. I'm pretty sure if you were there, hearing that live, you wouldn't hear that harmonic as near as loud as in this video.
@@cemstrumental Interesting explanation. Could you explain how you got that conclusion? Did you run the audio on some program to analyze it or what? How can you know those numbers so precisely?

Which one is my favorite? All of them. Zlatopolsky is unbelievable, he just nods and that C2 rolls out effortlessly with another octave to spare.
Talk about power, Michalyk is an absolute beast.
His speaking voice is aroung Eb1 - C2, so thats why C2 is so easy for him. Top 1 lowest voices that I heard.
@Finnegan Bass I looked at some of his videos and he's just a baritone that speaks with a fair amount of vocal fry 💀
@@WSlopeAggie You're very mistaken. Even I can hit an Ab1 without subharmonics, and I am not an Oktavist or Profundo, although I may be one someday.

OK, I'm a bass singer in church choir, and I give up on this one. I have no idea how to keep my pitch steady in such low notes, let alone vocalizing audible lyrics! But perhaps it will improve with age. (20 years to go *sigh*)
theoretical physicist I'm not in any choirs at the moment, but in the past I have occasionally been allowed to take notes down an octave, or sometimes sing the note as written while everyone else jumps up the octave. Fun times, fun times.
(not actually an oktavist, though I do fairly reliably have about a D2)
theoretical physicist In my choir C#2 (in Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre) and even B1 (in Spaseniye Sodelal by Pavel Chesnokov) has popped up. So it does happen but the choir leader is hopefully competent enough not to pick songs that is impossible for the choir to sing.
They use subharmonic singing, that’s why they can go that low
They are using subatomic it kinda cheating the chest struggle I do a lot of this in chest with microphone but I am able to talk like bass singing lol it fun and I love that I able to do without microphone until I get below a0 then have to it not as loud I go to e0 before gets to have some trouble at d0 that hard write there but I mean subharmonic is easy once you get the transition and smoothness in it I have had many bass singer s carp themselves listening to me in person I am very hard to beat I am able to put do a whole group of basses by myself so I mean just practice and if in natural voice then yeah you can beat any of these people I mean if you put work in

@@andrewpearson1903 Why ? baritone is really frexible voice type ?
For some of the extremely low tones, I swear I can hear very faint overtones!
Lara you are, some of the really low notes are harmonics. Search around, there's a youtube video showing how this can be done, and no it's not my video. I did do what was suggested and I can produce those same harmonics myself.
MichaelGaribaldi They don't use subharmonics technique. With this technique everyone could be oktavists lol They have naturally deep ass low voices and they sing only with their modal voice. No tricks.
Some of the. ARE actually using harmonics, like Paul Mihalyk. Alexander Ort isn't. A harmonic has a very distinct reedy sound to it. I have a low range myself, "C1", I can sing it chest voice or with a harmonic. A lot of the really low notes really are harmonics!
MichaelGaribaldi Nah. They wouldn't be considered oktavists then. If that was the case they could get hundreds of tenors with ability to do subharmonics. The special thing in these men is that they only use their chest voice. With voice that low it's normal that it sounds like subharmonics.
@@MultiKamil97 Actually Some of them are really using subharmonics, such as Pavel Myakotin, who is naturally a baritone. But they have mastered subharmonic to a point where it's incredibly full and clear, but still you can hear the difference with chest voice.
"Any bass can croak these notes into a microphone"
I'm a Baritone, and anything below a D doesn't sound at all. I dunno how any bass can croak these notes out unless there is some kind of vocal technique you can make use of.
Subharmonics probably?
Fry makes it easy to reach the pitch. You’ll never have anywhere near the volume with it though. A lot of people think negatively of fry, which is unfair, because fry can sound great when used by a good singer. It’s got pros of its own, with its main drawback being you’ll pretty much never be able to do it without a mic
Well kind of. Many people can go that low with training. Its just sad that some people who are naturally gifted wont make use of their abilities and others have to do twice the work of theirs to keep up
Subharmonic phonation. It's a technique with which you use your false chords to create the heavy vibrating bass sound. Look up David Larsson for how its done!
