  • FM Hans Jung challenged Hikaru to a blindfold game directly. He's no slouch though with 40 years of experience in blindfold chess! Hikaru also plays a game against WCM Olena Kucherenko, both at the Annex Chess Club.

    The thing about blindfold chess that I struggle with is not just holding the position in your head, but maintaining it accurately while you still calculate variations.

    • @fractal_mind562
      @fractal_mind562 Рік тому +8

      My understanding is that its less about seeing the position directly, but more as seeing each piece in relation to other pieces, so the calculations and analysis go hand in hand with holding the position. I do something similar with snooker, I hold the positions of the reds in my mind visually as a concept, so that I dont necessarily know the position of each red but rather I know the distance from each red to the desired object ball. I might be way off but thats what I do personally

      I would be like rook takes h6, and they would be like there is no piece on h6 , and i would be like YIKES.

      That's why you ain't a gm. But if you did chess as a child for years and years like the strong gms, then I'm sure it would come no problem. Just watch and be amazed.

      It may help if you realize that the formation of ideas grammatically (as demonstrated by your statement about struggling with this concept) is almost as remarkable a feat. As someone who puts ideas into words, you know that being able to do this is difficult for most people, and my guess is that you would say the ability to do this comes with time and with practice. The same skill is simply being demonstrated here with chess, and if you compare it to those skills in language and linguistics, it's really not too much different. - j q t -

      dxc4 looks good because you're up a pawn, but White can fork the pawn and the King with Qa4+. With best play, Black loses the attacking pawn anyway, so it's not really a true gambit.
