  • In this excerpt from the December 2019 episode of Ask the Vet ( • Ask the Vet - Sidebone... ), Dr. Gray and SmartPaker Dan answer a viewer question about sidebone in horses and whether or not it’s an area of concern. Dr. Gray consults super vet and friend of the show, Dr. Andy Kaneps, for his perspective on how sidebone affects pre-purchase exam results, what it is, and new areas of research from the UK that suggest it might be an indicator of other conditions.

Side bone can be caused by bad farrier work or not enough farrier work as well. Always make sure your horse is on a good schedule with a good farrier!

My horse never had an issue. We never even knew she had it! We changed farriers, and then all of a sudden, she was limping on circles and tight turns. We go to the vet and get the diagnosis of side bone. I swear it’s because of the new farrier

So, would this be the same as a periosteal reaction?

Again - it’s just down to watching your horse for lameness. Sue Dyson is a good vet but at the end of the day none of us are perfect. I’m 33 and I have so many aches and pains. As long as your horse is happy and you monitor them, what’s the issue. Sometimes we can read in to things way too much and if we do it’s going to end up making us ill.
My horse has side bone In his front hooves and my horse actually had unbalanced hooves (P3 not being in correct alignment). There is an epidemic of crushed heels in horses with open heeled shoes. The research is there and the techniques now need to change when shoeing - for the benefit of the horse (and the owners wallets!)
