    -------------------------------
    The Strokes changed the sound of popular and independent music by embodying a nostalgic sound at a time when nu-metal reigned supreme and music fans were questioning rock’s authenticity.
    Alongside The White Stripes, they led a new rock revolution. Their 2001 debut, Is This It was a decade-defining record that introduced the template for a new era of guitar-based music. A movement that spawned a slew of rock bands which would evolve into the alternative and indie rock scene. [The Black Keys, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, The Shins and Arctic Monkeys.]
    Four albums later and not much else from their catalogue has really come close to recapturing the immediacy of Is This It. There are some great tracks in their later releases and the group developed into fine musicians, but their debut currently remains their most celebrated effort.
    We’re now approaching six years since the group’s last studio album. (2013, Comedown Machine) and with the recent news of The Strokes plotting a global comeback for 2019 -- 20 years since their formation -- I don’t know if I should be excited or not. The Strokes have had a fairly odd and inconsistent career. They’re plagued to always be measured against their debut. And for a brief moment, they really did burn very brightly. Leaving me and plenty of others to ask, was that really it?
    -------------------------------
    The Strokes FAQ
    Are The Strokes still together? Are The Strokes broken up?
    Yes, The Strokes are still together. No they did not break up. The group has been on hiatus since 2013’s Comedown Machine. Recently the group announced festival and tour dates for a 2019 comeback. This could mean we’ll see new music from The Strokes in 2019 as well.
    Are The Strokes good?
    The Strokes are a great garage rock band. Give their record Is This It a chance and decide for yourself.
    Are The Strokes British?
    No, The Strokes are from New York City however their initial record label, Rough Trade, was located in the UK.
    Are The Strokes touring?
    The Strokes are planning a global comeback in 2019 with festival and touring dates on the way.

      I'm such a music novice. I've always been more of a book/film person because I find it hard to understand something when I can't put it in a larger narrative context. One of the amazing things about your videos is that...it's like you help me hear context and narrative in the albums you talk about. And understanding the context weirdly makes me enjoy music that I never noticed before or just skipped over. So yes, I AM excited for The Strokes' new album because of what you talked about here, and I'm listening to all their albums with a new "lens" now. Thanks for what you do man

  • @jefferyjones8399
    @jefferyjones8399 5 років тому +162

    Honestly, I love every single one of their records. I don't listen with Is This It in mind. I think that's kind of an unhealthy way to view their discography. Room on Fire was actually my first Strokes album and I hold it about the same regards. I was HYPED for First Impressions and Angles. While, I think First Impressions is overlong and could do without at least three or four songs, it's got some of my absolute favorite material from them on it. "You Only Live Once," "Electricityscape," and "Ize of the World" are (IMHO) classics. Sometimes I go through phases where I listen to Angles even more than Is This It or Room on Fire. Comedown Machine is really good as well.
    I really think it boils more down to the music press and hype than anything. If there was as much hype and press behind their other releases, it's likely we would be talking about them differently today.
    I am looking forward to the new record. Although, the Future Present Past didn't do much for me as a whole. It's probably the first time I felt a little meh towards a Strokes release.
    I would argue that Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol also fall into the same trap. If you stopped comparing everything to their debuts, the rest of their respective discographies are pretty damn good.

There's been plenty of incredible music since then, but it's been somewhat the same old stuff. Nothing has really been incendiary enough to kickstart a new age, and instead it's all marketing that makes the changes, rather than the music.

In other areas of music, namely hip hop, music has been in a constant state of revolution brought on by the mass reach of the Internet. And there have been plenty independent rock acts that have been changing the game lately, but as rock isn't mainstream anymore, they're not selling out stadiums around the world, which is actually good for the genre right now.

    Frankly this is the problem with nearly all of post punk and dance rock alternative bands from the 2000s. Interpol, The Strokes, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand.... all have their best records in the beginning of their careers, usually the first or the second effort. The only exceptions to that may be just The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys or maybe Queens of the Stone Age, though they're sound is a little different.

      The first half of that album is amazing, almost on the same level of Is This It? It does drag a lot in the second half, but if they got rid of three or four songs and had 15 Minutes as the album closer it would easily be in contention with Is This It? for their best record.

    The strokes and Julian casablancas have done incredible things to keep music progressive. Maybe people didn’t like the sound of their later stuff as much but that’s kind of the point. Julian looked at how influential he was and decided he wanted to do something special for music itself so he changed his style and still to this day makes new and interesting music nobody has heard before

    Your video made me really sad, but it's still very good nevertheless. Your editing is really awesome and your facts are checked. I will always consider the Strokes as one of the greatest bands of all time and even if they stopped making music we still have their side projects to enjoy. Personally I'm excited for their comeback but I also think that Julian and maybe Albert aren't too excited to get the band together and I understand where they are coming from. Virtue is probably my favorite album of 2018 and it would make me really happy if Julian kept releasing music with the Voidz especially that it makes him happier to work with the Voidz now than with the Strokes.

      He has never on the record said he's happier working with the voidz than the strokes. that has always been a rumor that articles make up and people believe and he's stated many times that he's good with The Strokes and he said in a recent interview he talks to them frequently. He has said he's able to express his ideas more with the voidz because The Strokes is more of a collaboration now. But thats as far as it goes lol just wanted to clarify this because I always see this in the comments

    • @hemoglobinsoup
      @hemoglobinsoup 5 років тому +4

      @@BeachSkies yes you're right. when I said happier I meant that he is able to express himself freely without having to deal people expecting specific things from him. He can do whatever he wants to do with the Voidz and no one will complain that it doesn't sound like Is This It. and yes I don't know him personally and therefore I can't speak about his feelings but back in 2014 when he first started working with the Voidz he was the happiest I have ever seen him.

    It seems all of 2000's revival bands had the same problem of delivering their best album (usually a debut) and then becoming less and less interesting with each subsequent release (Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Libertines, Interpol).

    • @--REGULAR--REGULAR
      @--REGULAR--REGULAR 5 років тому +15

      Not the White stripes... they came out with white blood cells and elephant after their debut and The strokes have made better albums than Is This It whether it's Room On Fire, Angles or First. Room on fire is there most original material in my opinion, besides the end has no end riff and better than Is This It by a mile. The one thing Is This It has over Room On Fire is the quality of production and mixing.

      Yeah idk about that. Arcade Fire may have peaked with Funeral, but they had a string of 4 great albums before the recent release. Personally, I've always been in the camp that wants to see a band progress their sound and try new, interesting things. If they tried to simply ape Is This It with every studio outing, it'd get stale. Casablancas in particular has never been one to stagnate. He's always pushing his craft, taking new risks, trying new directions. You see it as early as FIoE. Angles is more prominently experimental, but I feel the middle gets a bit sloppy. Comedown Machine is underrated, and the Future Present Past EP is very telling. I always thought "Drag Queen" was always the strongest of that bunch because it's the most instrumentally daring, and indicative of their growth as musicians. Casablancas brings a lot of that fire to The Voidz, and for the first time in a long time, he looks _genuinely happy_ playing live. I hope all of The Strokes' solo efforts mesh into something new and exciting that keeps pushing them forward in 2019.
