It's a different world than it used to be. If John Mayer is still putting out personal content I think Chris probably will too. I think it's great to have such an intimate window into these amazing musicians lives and minds
Yup I knew you wouldn't leave us wondering what was happening you're almost as articulate verbally as you are with a guitar. Thank you and congratulations!
y'know what i love? is that most guitarists given their toolkit would choose to play pretty sparingly when the progression gets to the 6(maj) chord with the undiatonic 3 in it, but chris' actual guitar IQ allows him to actually play the best and most complex licks over it in particular, utilizing diminished, modal harmonic minor, flat nines, and even just straight arpeggiations, making it the tastiest parts of it all... makes me really appreciate him as a player.
Great video Chris. I just picked up the Fender ‘68 custom pro reverb a few weeks ago, I absolutely love it. I’m 58 and at 35 lbs and 40 watts it’s perfect for taking to gigs. My ‘65 twin reverb can throw my back out if I lift it wrong and 85 watts can be too much for most places. If I’m playing somewhere that I can mic it, my favorite is still my little tweed ‘57 champ, small simple and clean.
I bought the same guitar when it came out a few years back but with the intentions of modding it. I turned it into my eary 'Who' guitar. I use a 55 Tele PU put in at the bridge and a 66 Ric PU put at the neck and can get Townsends early sounds from just one guitar. It has worked out even better than I expected. Killer guitar.
@@leekovalskyj9218 Maybe.. I don't know. I am 74 and in '68 I decided if I wanted to get somewhere I had to write my own tunes and move to either NY, California or London. I chose London and joined Tallis a Prog Rock band.I saw all the greats Hendrix, Cream, Jeff Beck etc. I was interested in their tone but not their music. I could not join the ranks as a copy. I am still at it. I formed a power trio with two young players o do the 26 Prog Metal tunes I wrote and I have 9 guitars to give me different sounds. the Duo Sonic is just one to give me those specific tones. What is interesting is that the women now in her 80's that wound the Ric 66 PU's for Townsend was still alive working part time at Ric and she handwound my PU. I only got charged $75 for it.
Heard the song, instantly went to iTunes to make a purchase. Tell me how it feel is great, but there's something just absolutely singular about Jump In. Love what you're doing, man.
When Chris (or any other genius guitar player, for that matter) begins talking about gear and the effects loop, the only words I understand are guitar and amp.
When I first hear that tone last week, I instantly drew a connection with the guitar tone used in a Sarah McLaughlin song called "Witness". It took me a freaking week to sort why I connected with that tone and the song itself. Nicely done Chris!
I saw the video and also the one by Chris Watkins about how the video was made, both great, my wife and I really loved the song, your guitar playing, the singer's voyce, everything, good job man, keep on doing videos like that, it's great news that young people like you guys do good music again, excellent, greetings from Mallorca ;)
Funnily enough, I popped to the local music shop on my lunch. I’ve been looking at teles for ages as I want a hardtail having had a floyd rose and fed up with trems. They actually had and ex demo duo sonic. I’d never heard of them. Was quite impressed.
The sound of the guitar from the Jump In jam (0:31) is constantly making me think of a huge blue whale (specially at 0:50), and to add to that, the airiness/spaciousness of the backing track is acting like a endless ocean .... simply brilliant! 🙂
Love the guitar tone in this song and as always the guitar playing is unbelievably good. Your approach and nuances with notes, slides, bends adds so much emotion to your parts. Stunning.
The jams in this video are so good that I just laughed in the middle of watching them. Easily the most enjoyable guitarist to watch/listen to right now.
I love the Cardinal Black sound. Finally, an act that my wife and I can appreciate together, if for somewhat different reasons. (I lean toward musicianship, mastery of craft, and guitars; she appreciates songwriting but dislikes "ostentatious" acts like Dave Matthews Band, something I hope to change when we can attend live concerts again). She doesn't understand the peculiarity of using a Duo Sonic, but she's starting to come around on good guitar tone (which is how I justify buying new, and usually more expensive gear). Cardinal Black is killer at every level. The songs are well written and performed, the singer is perfectly suited to the style and has an amazing voice, and the subject matter is currently relevant while not dating itself overly much and will be enjoyable for ages to come.
Great video as always. Your second melodic playing clip in this is AWSOME. So fluid and controlled with that signature emotive phrasing that only YOU seem to do. Love the Duo Sonic and always have even though my '63 is too small for my 'ham'-hands. I mostly use it for open G slide playing these days, but it was one of my 1st solid-body electric guitars and has seen lots of well-worn affection.
Chris, I love the soulful tune in the middle section. The rockin is cool, but that mellower stuff your melodic sense and amazing touch really shine, thanks!
What a sweet demonstration tune for the Duo Sonic. That in it's self should sell it. The second demo gem is identifiably, Chris Buck, going back to 'Miss You'. When Chris plays on a world wide No.1 hit it will bring him guitar mogul status.
The choice of tone was brilliant. It was the perfect complement for the smooth dense warmth of Tom’s voice and harmonies. The guitar parts had a sharpness that cut through the warmth that otherwise might have been lost if it had a similar warmth. It’s such a memorable guitar riff, it’s hard to get it out of your head. I think it also demonstrates Chris’s growth as a musician, the ability to not just riff on the guitar but create something really integral to a song.
Ear Candy 🍬🍭 Everything that comes off your fingers is smooth, chewy and oh so sweet! Here's hoping that Chris and Cardinal Black kick down the doors of today's modern music and bring back musicianship and feel to popular music. Well done! I'm going to have to try out the Harmonic Tremolo on my POD Go. God bless and rock on 😎🎸👍
Lol I was just getting into short-scale Fenders a couple weeks ago. I seem to be about that far ahead of the algorithm. Just started studying Wind Cries Mary with my guitar teacher, and two weeks later, Tim Pierce announces he's doing a video for it.
It's crazy how one sound that be good or bad, but then put it in the mix and it's totally different. I would never say, "This is a great sound," but in the mix it fits just right.
One of the things to remember about both the Mustang and Duo-Sonic is that they are very short-scale guitars. People will talk about how much easier bending is on Gibsons, with a 24.75" string length, compared to 25.5" on Strats and Teles. But the Mustang and Duo-Sonic are 3/4 of an inch even *shorter* scale-length than Gibsons, at 24". Shorter scale length makes bending easier, because string tension doesn't have to be quite as high to be at pitch. Equally important, though, shorter-scale instruments don't have quite as much harmonic content. The shorter the string, the less "wiggly" it is, so the fundamental and lower-order harmonics dominate. My guess is that octave-up fuzzes sounded MUCH better when using short-scale guitars.
I have a Duo Sonic from 1993 (mim) that I’m going to give to my daughter in a few years :) Sounds so good, I try hard not to connect with it. Btw: I see people on different forums look down on the Mexican made guitars, to the point where they couldn’t even play one. I bought my first MiM last summer, now I own three (and two MiA).
Ehm... the tone is so recognizable that I thought the guitar was just a prop for the video and the recording was done on a Revstar :D As for the Duo-Sonic, I wonder how it compares to Bullet S2 from early 80s.
The early Bullet is, essentially, the spiritual successor to this as Fender's dedicated student model prior to their concession that student guitars could actually be cheaper versions of the flagship models. In that regard, they're not hugely different, and their sound is not miles apart. Scaled down bodies, Strat style pickups in the neck and bridge only, without pole pieces. Obvious differences I can see - scale length, pickup spacing, and bridge design. I'll start with the latter. The early Bullet is, like the Duo sonic, a hardtail using Telecaster type barrel saddles. Later Bullets, including the whole made in Japan run, switched to a standard Strat tremolo, but the original was a hardtail through and through. On the face of it, they should be pretty similar here, except that the Bullet foregoes a traditional screw down bridge and instead mounts the saddles onto a folded pickguard. The effect, from what I hear playing it, is that it's a bit heavier and snappier sounding rather than twangy. The Duo Sonic is definitely brighter. The scratch plate sort of "spreads" the resonation. It sustains because the bridge-body contact is good, but it's duller than using e.g. a high mass bridge. The big change though is that the Duo sonic is short scale but the Bullet is standard Fender length. A bit less twangy again but a big change in feel. You've also got higher tension from the extra length, so either thinner strings or harder work to play. The Duo Sonic wins for crazy bends though. Pickup spacing is mostly just a product of the scale length change but I think the bridge is perhaps a little more aggressively positioned towards the saddles. Having played both, I hugely prefer the Bullet which is much closer to a conventional Strat sound with a Tele twang on the bridge - you can easily get both sounds from it and it's versatile. Duo Sonics often sound like slightly rubber bandy Strats with very bright highs despite a general dullness. For this song I see why it works though.
Hi Chris, liking the sound of the new band. It puts me in mind of Storyville, Dave Grissom's band. Great songs, great singing and playing all round. Nice one.
Hey Chris, really love your playing. If I could make a request I'd really enjoy it if you were to release a video about your solo Challenge favourites and a winner. All the best 🤘
great video and inspiring playing Chris, I own a Duo Sonic HS (2021), its an amazing guitar, im deeply in love with the tones I get mixing with my mg-30 and playing around with differente effects.... its such a percusive guitar, I just updated the pots to 250k and got a warmer and balance tones.... probably my next guitar will be the Mustang player series with P90..... this short scale guitar are unique...best regards!!
Interesting, as always. I hadn't got round to seeing the video, and had surmised that there was a tone roll-off due to a 'cocked' wah effect. Shows how wrong you can be! 😄. Great track.
Hi Chris, I'm looking to buy the tyson tone pickups for my Yamaha 502t which I bought cause of you. What potentiometers did you put for the volume and tone knob in your 502T and for the tyson tone? Thank you!
My first electric had the exact same body shape, but had a whammy and ONE single coil. It was a Fiesta Red "Bronco". Same scale length as the Duo Sonic.
I actually thought it was the Game changer Audio Plus piano style sustain pedal in parts, but listening after your info its heavy compression, either naturally produced by the amp or studio/pedal effect.
Lucky I already got one (Squier) some years ago... same model, desert sand.... unique light tones... I never have played mine effected, only clean... maybe I’ll try now
Got a squier mustang. Pretty much the same thing. I like them, but they are roughly the same price as a tele or strat, so I'd rather just but one of them
I love these videos, Chris! Look forward to them every week. Yo, also I bought this same duo-sonic after seeing your first video on duo sonic’s. It feels lovely and the aesthetics are pleasing to the eye. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
I love those "Mariah Carey" high-range embellishments he adds, bending beyond the range of the frets. Vocal soloing strikes again with another exhibition from the master.
I've REALLY wanted to get a jaguar or mustang for the last year. I've been watching Troy Grady's channel. I'm really curious about a single coil guitar with a 24"scale. I've NEVER thought of Mustang being used for shredding, let alone saw it. Now that i think of it it seems perfect. I'm thinking of getting 2, maybe a Mustang, jaguar or even a duo sonic; one with the unique pickups and the other with a traditional single coils.
I posted this above also.(down below?). The single pickup version of this guitar was a "Bronco". Same body shape, but with a whammy and ONE pickup. Same scale length. These are very rare though, in fact I don't recall ever seeing one for sale. Mine was around $150 brand new around 1970 or 1971 I believe. I'm not a big fan of Fiesta Red, but I think those just came in one or two finishes.
A very humble dude. Not too musicians would explain and let people know how they got their tone. One in a million, much success Chris.
I am very excited for his future. This guy is gold!!
Thank u Chris 🙏😍
It used to be rare that we had a microphone to tone outside of guitar magazine, before the internet
Enjoy these videos while we can, because this young man is headed to stardom. He won't have time for these.
It's a different world than it used to be. If John Mayer is still putting out personal content I think Chris probably will too. I think it's great to have such an intimate window into these amazing musicians lives and minds
That’s some badass jam at the end with a broken string included ha ha ha, so glad you decided to use that take!
I could listen to him talking about stuff I'll never be able to understand, all day. Superb.
Chris, you're something else mate. We don't know we're born with you making weekly videos!
I can't imagine anyone making the guitar look more enticing to play. You're a very fine fellow in every way I can think of.
Yup I knew you wouldn't leave us wondering what was happening you're almost as articulate verbally as you are with a guitar. Thank you and congratulations!
The mans guitar control is incredible. With this mans super bends Im surprised any strings stand up to it - Class act
The secret of the tone is.....he's just really good at playing the guitar.
True original approach to playing.
That’s at least 96% of the reason
You are friggin awesome bud...I'll say it again you and Mathew scott are my 2 favs on utube thanks man
The track you play in the outro of this video makes me wanna learn how to play it myself.
Some of the best bending techniques and soulful playing of anyone I have ever heard on youtube or anywhere else.
The best description I can find for that tone is "haunting". It was gorgeous!
That jam at 3:24, just wow...
Awesome note choices in that jam
y'know what i love? is that most guitarists given their toolkit would choose to play pretty sparingly when the progression gets to the 6(maj) chord with the undiatonic 3 in it, but chris' actual guitar IQ allows him to actually play the best and most complex licks over it in particular, utilizing diminished, modal harmonic minor, flat nines, and even just straight arpeggiations, making it the tastiest parts of it all... makes me really appreciate him as a player.
Is that an actual song? Sounds really peaceful and lovely. Love it❤
Great video Chris. I just picked up the Fender ‘68 custom pro reverb a few weeks ago, I absolutely love it. I’m 58 and at 35 lbs and 40 watts it’s perfect for taking to gigs. Thanks for talking affordable guitars on your channel Chris. More of this is needed in the guitar community on YT!
Gorgeous playing there

You honestly make the guitar sing. Beautiful.
So smoooooooth. Your videos pack so much info into a shorter format for us with short attention spans!!!
Nice Duo Sonic. Chris, bro, it would be nice to hear you playing a Jaguar. Lot of subtle tones and possible variations. Greetings!
This is so cool! Thank you for sharing and the walk through. Been loving all the Cardinal Black tunes, can’t wait for the album!!
Sorry I'm not as well spoken as you Chris, but I gotta say ...That jam at the end was un fn believable, dude....that was badass
Thanks dude! These songs are great. Keep um comin.
I don't always cry, but when I do, it's to your guitar playing
Man that jam at the end was killer
Your right hand technique is really cool, the way you switch between fingers and pick is amazing. I gotta study that……..
Been wondering what wah pedal it was since the track was released! Thanks Chris.
Thank you for creating this video! A master class of its own!
Fender Duo Sonic - kind of Stratty really-I liked your reveal of the 'naked' sound, intriguing
Ehm... the tone is so recognizable that I thought the guitar was just a prop for the video and the recording was done on a Revstar :D
As for the Duo-Sonic, I wonder how it compares to Bullet S2 from early 80s.

Such a tasty guitar part!
7:16 was anyone else hearing David Bowie heroes synth sound? Sounds awesome Chris!
Thank you Chris!!
Great stuff Chris
Hi Chris, liking the sound of the new band. It puts me in mind of Storyville, Dave Grissom's band. Great songs, great singing and playing all round. Nice one.
I must say, I love that sound you got!
Hey Chris, really love your playing. If I could make a request I'd really enjoy it if you were to release a video about your solo Challenge favourites and a winner. All the best 🤘
Great video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing
Second jam had me smiling throughout
Looks like Chris didn't battle any ladders this week. Picking a fight with a 12footer can be a dangerous thing...
Na, he just won the fight this time around
I think it's safe to say that's the best sounding "student guitar" in the world!
great video and inspiring playing Chris, I own a Duo Sonic HS (2021), its an amazing guitar, im deeply in love with the tones I get mixing with my mg-30 and playing around with differente effects.... its such a percusive guitar, I just updated the pots to 250k and got a warmer and balance tones.... probably my next guitar will be the Mustang player series with P90..... this short scale guitar are unique...best regards!!
Thanks, Chris. Sweet & Clean: that's the tone for me, bro! At my age, I'm done with sawtooth waves.
This is how the McAleer's play a duo sonic tone lol 😂🍻🎸
The guitar is crying ❤️❤️
I love your sound!
Nice touch. I come here for the information but primarily to listen to this guy play.
My father haves an original 1959 duo sonic in this color, the tone and playability are amazing, the best guitar i've tried by far
From Nepal 🇳🇵 big fan ❤️❤️❤️
Nepal is cool!
That closing jam. Oh my.
Dude you slayed that e string. Nice!!!
Thank you!
Best guitarist to my 👂
I cannot thank Justinguitar enough. It was 2 years ago when Chris featured in a Justin Sandercoe video. My ears have been blessed since.
My first electric had the exact same body shape, but had a whammy and ONE single coil. It was a Fiesta Red "Bronco". Same scale length as the Duo Sonic.
Knowing Chris, he probably meant to break the string at that exact point. He is that good lol
What a perfect way to end the video
I actually thought it was the Game changer Audio Plus piano style sustain pedal in parts, but listening after your info its heavy compression, either naturally produced by the amp or studio/pedal effect.
This video will drive the price of Duo Sonics ( that none of us have ever seen let alone played) through the roof 😂👏🤣
I never knew I needed one until now😆
Lucky I already got one (Squier) some years ago... same model, desert sand.... unique light tones... I never have played mine effected, only clean... maybe I’ll try now
Nah. Mattew Scott just had one on his channel yesterday or the day before, I think.
There’s a 58 Duo Sonic for sale at my local shop.
Got a squier mustang. Pretty much the same thing. I like them, but they are roughly the same price as a tele or strat, so I'd rather just but one of them
Tone and the solo reminds me of slashes nov rain solo. Very humbucker sounding.
Is it easy to bend on?
I love these videos, Chris! Look forward to them every week. Yo, also I bought this same duo-sonic after seeing your first video on duo sonic’s. It feels lovely and the aesthetics are pleasing to the eye. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
I love those "Mariah Carey" high-range embellishments he adds, bending beyond the range of the frets. Vocal soloing strikes again with another exhibition from the master.
I've got a duo-sonic hs and effing love it! Such a great guitar for the money!
