#1 being tackling is spot on. My first year at a legit rugby school I couldn’t crack the first XV even though I was very fast, had great feet, and was a sniper off the tee. I was just too much of a liability defensively. My next year I just focused on tackling drills and changed my attitude that I was not just going to become passable at tackling, I was going to love it, even though I was a smaller player. Really brought my love for the game up to another level.
Tackling is definitely the thing I need to work the most on, as you said the turnover is more likely in a tackle that pushes back, and its such a good feeling for the team when a dominant tackle is made
Well Presented, and really great tips, Uggy - as an ex player and lover of the game, these really are good tips! Love the balance, tackling, and supporting kids - we need our youth coming through!
I watched Charlie Gamble from under 11's and under 13's age grade. He was about as big as his teams prop, but also as fast as his wingers were. His dad was very involved with his development, and filmed his games and pretty much gave him 1 on 1 coaching outside of his actual coach. Charlie was built from the ground up into what he is today and I think for most rugby players it's all environmental. The Ioane brothers, the Savea brothers, the Barretts, the Fainga's, the Schoups etc. You still have to have the talent, brawn, fitness and drive for it though
I have a problem, I perform very well at practice; however, when it's match day, I can't seem to perform at the level that I usually perform at practice. I realized that I normally overthink stuff when it's gameday, I always want to prove a point to the coach and my fellow teammates, with this info, I'll definitely improve.
I used to have the same problem, I think it's just a matter of getting used to the game day environment with the crowds and trying to react to the other team's strategies. Also have confidence in yourself, if you're too self conscious about your performance or technique by the time you react the game would've already moved on to the next phase
Somehow this video came up on my youtube randomly like you were just reading my mind. Im 24 years old next year and i needed these advices to improve more on my rugby craft. I took a gap year this year but now im keen to get back into the game and hopefully make a name for myself before my nuts get saggy. I’ll be training hard in the gym and on the fields to prep but Thank you from NZ🏉🇳🇿🇹🇴
Please, if you're a beginner start with low chop tackling. It's far safer and super effective. The tackling technic shown on this video is the best, but for non-beginers.
Hey ,love this video . It will help a lot . My brother is 15 years old and he just got back into rugby . Since I lift a bit myself ,he asked me to help him out . I had no clue how to assist untill now .
Great video brother and many wise words indeed. 👍 You said you could spend more time talking about the psychology of the sport and I think that would make an interesting video. I'd also be interested to hear your thoughts on the RFU's 'Core Values'. (I think they are what sets rugby apart from other sports and will serve players well out in the world as well as on the pitch.)
The last point is definitely most prominent for the more technical positions like hooker or kicker. Thx for the video. Also a point I would like to add is that rugby is as much a physical as it is a mental game, cuz if you get in the head of you oppsing team you truly screw them over. People can say they dont get bothered but I have personally screwed with an entire teams head cuz they pissed me off and we scored more point in those 15 minutes than the other 45. So either block out their comments or be the one to screw in the mental game.
Love the content brother. Keep em coming! Nailed it with the tackling technique. Especially when you said "you gotta have that ticker that hunger to wanting to tackle" 💯
With tackling Id say my tip is try different styles. I was a really good attacking fullback. Id score multiple tries a game. But I couldnt tackle for crap so I was always in lower levels. Everyone would try to teach me. Theyd teach the hit in the lower chest lift leg and drive backwards. That does not work fo a fullback. Once I learnt to tackle by wrapping up the legs I was significantly better but by the I was mid 20s and just playing for fun.
Do you guys have any tips regarding performance anxiety ? feel like ive been hindred for years because of it and I havent perform to the best at all, but my passion for the sport is big and I want to grow further, I have to get rid of that over thinking phase
hey do you do coaching in australia? if so where? i’ve been having a kind of hesitant season purely because my positioning isn’t where it needs to be, and these tips are so helpful. being raised by a single mum that isn’t really into the rough stuff makes it really hard to learn and practise new things. so your help would be greatly appreciated
Hey uggy i found you just and found you interesting, does side stepping (fake stepping) something like football (Cristiano Ronaldo not American ) to feint a good technique ? I am a very small 13 yr old kid so i am more of agility not committing to tackles? any good techniques to skill past the opponent, like step stepping bc 1 small push and im done i too only do leg day no arm my body with is….
Hey mate, really hard to say without seeing you play. To be honest, I reckon stepping is overrated. Learn to run good lines, and step into people’s weak shoulder - this is how you see small halfbacks and wingers blow past front rowers.
@@uggy mean that i basically abandoned the sport for a few good years now because of Covid well now that im in Australia NSW i learned that aus is famous for rugby and that i am relocating there for a few years now i know how to throw a few tackles and stuff around but not perfect And stepping as in feinting direction and running the other way round and then when they see i change lane they will do it to come after me then i will do a very underrated/not recognised at all skill move (roulette) basically means that i turn the opposite direction in a spin very quick and easy motion to cleanly get by any defenders in soccer/football don’t really know abt rugby. And also do you have any social media accounts like discord Facebook or what insta (I don’t have but will be happy to create 1)
Hey mate, So gad i came across your videos. My son is 7 years old his been in div 1 for 3 years and has social anxiety, he wants to stay in this team with the people he knows. Im seeing him getting scared and wont come off the line to tackle. How can i help him with his fear of getting hurt when someone runs at him, his confidence is very low now he thinks his a bad player. I've done the wrong thing telling him dont be scared, if you dont tackle and scared you probably won't make the team next year only adding to his anxiety and pressure. I know i stuffed up but I'm ready to correct it with you guidance. He got absolutely smashed last week. He was on the ground a bigger boy held his shirt as leverage and pulled into him and absolutely hammered him, laying on his stomach his head got all impact and his legs went in the air. He loves footy but the confidence is so low. Please any advice from you I will follow. Thanks mate
@@shanesutton8461 hey brother, can definitely feel your struggle on this one. At only 7 years old the top priority should be to make sure he’s having fun (although it can be a tough watch at times). The more fun they’re having the more they’ll engage in the sport and get better naturally. One day the whole technique and confidence will click and it’ll be magic. In the meantime, I’d recommend doing some kind of technique and confidence building games at home in a fun way - grab out the mattresses and pillows. Do everything you can to build his confidence 👍 it may take a while but worth it in the next year or two! Good luck, I’m keen to hear how he gets on 🔥
@@uggy Thanks bro for the reply so quickly, I really appreciate it 👍 if it's not fun it's not worth it, I'll just keep positive reinforcement, no pressure, fun and confident building / technique in an enjoyable way. I've never been a footy player but after watching the UA-cam video you recommended - feet position, hand position then pop with shoulder and head position for safety, I'll just drill it with him. Thanks so much mate 👍
The JJ tackle technique is so underrated for both new and fairly seasoned players as it's something that doesn't even need to be done at full speed, nor full takedown. Just the rib pop is enough. You can get all the mental benefits by simply repeatedly getting into that strong position, and knowing all your mates are too. Absolutely massive team builder under the right mindset and coaching guidance.
