- Thank goodness my gig is all about time and feel, because that's pretty much all I got. If you're looking for gospel chops, blistering technique and jaw-dropping licks, you have come to the wrong place, but if you enjoy getting a sneak peak into what's kept me employed as a professional musician, well here you go!
This video is the drumming performance of the Bill Withers tune, Just The Two Of Us, as performed by Michael Sanchez during The Voice Season 11, Knockout Rounds. Michael KILLED it... so talented that cat... -also a quick shout out to "Kenny E"... that's Eric, our keyboardist, lending some seriously sincere keyboard sax to that track... :)
If you'd like to see the performance as it aired, it may be viewed here:

This is the second Drum Cam video since Randy Faustino has been on board mixing sound for these and I'm so excited and proud to say, WOW... the audio is OUTSTANDING!!!! Between Steevo's video editing and Randy's mixes, it's getting to the point where the drumming is the LEAST impressive thing on my "drum cam" vids... lol...
For so long, I hated hearing my own double strokes... They were wonky and not at all in control. I spent hours practicing them... One thing I found that really helped was playing my double stroke rolls slowly and working on snapping my fingers to my palm in order to accent the second stroke of the double in each hand. I don't have the crispiest doubles in the world but I’m happy my diddling around on the hats has some amount of definition. Beyond that… welcome back to many of my old familiar licks… they’re like family to me at this point! :)
I hope there is something to be gained by viewing these drum cam vids… It is always my hope to provide a bit of insight into what I’m doing back there in the shadows on The Voice…
I hope you enjoy!

Damn simple beat, but well locked in the sound of that snare is perfect. The best cover for this song by far.
Tasty! What makes listening to Nate so pleasurable is his execution. Not a single throw away hit in his playing.
wowsers... thanx Dog... you flatter me... :)
Always inspiring , timing & groove what keeps my coverband mates HAPPY !! Rock ON !! Mr.Morton
nice... thanx mate! Are you in australia? Do you ever need a sub? I'd love an excuse to make it back there!
No, In the good ol' USA Would love to go to Australia as well. Take care & be well. Hope to meet up one day
me thinks we will! :)
I've been drumming for 9 years on and off now, and for last 2 years I have only played 4 times. I just watched all 17 of your drum cams and have never been so inspired to get back into the books and get some grooves going again. Thanks so much for these videos Nate, awesome!!!
of course man... stoked you enjoyed!
Nate, you are freaking incredible! Such a perfect mix of groove and flash. Just watching you makes me a better drummer.
Please, please, please! keep posting these vids from The Voice. Hearing that fill at :49 in Sledgehammer a few weeks ago knocked me off the couch. Then when I saw the Drum Cam 15 vid I fell over again seeing how you did it. Driving the wife crazy 'cause I'm always rewinding the Voice to hear something you did again. Keep up the great work and keep showing us! The Nate Morton Army is out here and we want to see it!
You are too kind.... I'm stoked you're diggin' the drum cams GP! :)
Awesome as always.
thank you!
Love watching your vids man! You're living my dream. I'll work hard to achieve my dream someday!
Definitely my favorite drummer. I do not get tired watching ur vids esp this one.
you flatter me... thank you !
My man, please post some more of those newer clips. The sound the playing is unreal. As a follow drummer to another I've seen some good players but your fills and tasty chops in the pocket is some of the best I've ever seen.... thank you and please post more JM
working on it!
:)
n
Another great groove to sit back and listen to. Looking forward again to the next one.
thanx for digging it! more to come! :)
I just look at your videos when I feel like i'm being stagnant with my playing. Thanks for always inspiring!
Flattered... thank you so much!
God I love you so much! Brand new fan here!! Seen you on Kalebs performance but couldn’t stop watching you!! You’re amazing man
Simply amazing as usual. Love the touch of no voice just the band! Keep em coming bud!
Yeah... it's cool and it's worked out well with Randy's mixes for the vids!
Just came upon this video. Great feel-for-the-music drumming here. But I could sit here and play all day long to that bassline!!! I don't know who your bass player is but that was sinfully soulful.
Wow, thanks for all the description, Nate. I definitely just gained a lot!! Thanks so much for doing these, and yes, the mix is stellar!! All three of you in perfect synergy. Well done. So uplifting.
Thanx BG... I'm having a lot of fun doing them and sharing... When I was a kid, there was a show on BBC (broadcast on PBS) called Rock School... it was a band and each episode, they'd break down different styles... what was the role of each instrument within that style and they'd interview well known players who played whatever the style was for that episode... I've always wanted to do a show like that in the US... you know... bring back that kind of education... That seems unlikely atm, but in lieu of that, I'm REALLY enjoying getting to do my own miniature version of Rock School... maybe I should start sharing more about what I think about when I'm playing particular genre's or break down more fills or groove that I post up... Thanx for checking out the vids my man!
Oh wow wow, I love this, and that yes, you are getting to do your own little version of that show. So awesome. How did I miss that show??? we are the same age about. And Yes yes, I'm sure all would agree that we'd love to hear every thought behind what is going on. Hey and if Steve ever gets slammed too much and needs some help with editing, hit me up.. I'm a pro broadcast editor, and would love to play with this stuff and help. I'll send you an email too. Oh and YES, there is that one fill you get to often, (never over done, cause it's so freakin power and funk triplet funk thing as you go around), I'd love to hear the breakdown on that and where did you first come up with that one!
This is about as deep a pocket groove as I ever heard , absolutley fantastic ! Incredible feel Nate ! Just stellar !
Allways on top! I love your work.
My oh my, that was beautiful. I love it!
thanx D... just trying my best to play music... :)
I love watching you play, Nate! So smooth and loose yet rock solid with the meter! Thanks!
thank YOU! :)
This. Is. Awesome.
hey man I am great fan of yours , your playing is as smooth as butter .....
Those drums! That playing!! Man, you’ve got it all. 🙏🏻
Best all round drummer out there right now for sure, my favorite thing about Nate is that he isn't scared to make these songs his own and not to discredit the other band members one bit because the talent seen here is unbelievable, however their sound would not be as unique without this super talent coming from the throne..glad I came across you Mr, Nate..you got me feeling motivated my man...#onlyreasoniwatchthevoice #goals
wow... thank you so much... you give me too much credit... I really appreciate it... :)
Your kit sounds amazing! And as always, your taste and the way you fit into the band is awesome! True inspiration!
Whooo! Damn dude. Solid!
Let's hope! I've been at it for quite a while! lol... :) -thank you B!
Great sound! Definitely!
Gotta be the best sounding snare I've ever heard through iPhone speakers! :) love your playing, Nate! Thanks for putting these videos up!
you got it JS.. my pleasure...
He’s overplaying sometimes
@@ethanbrunt7755 Haha! 🤣🤣
Always perfect performance Nate, greeting, your fans from Indonesia

Wow... blast from the past! Thank you Shah!
Brother you are smooth as glass!!You got my sub!!Great playin!!
Thanks for the insight Nate! Keep it up!
will do AC!
Man! I love the way you play! Nice and solid! Greetings from Brazil!
thanx GT... I'm doing my best! :)
Damn, that there is liquid brown sugar, baby :) Your groove and pocket are second to none. And as far as not having chops, shut up!! :D Love the hi-hat work in this one!! I'm working on some of that myself, but I have a ways to go :D But lovin' the journey. Incredible audio on this vid, as you pointed out. Another fantastic 2 and a half minutes of brilliance!
thank you Bruce... lol... and thanx for acknowledging the improved audio production. I wish I could've done it sooner, but it's just taken a while for certain things to fall into place... Really glad you like the vids! :)
Amazing drumming. This is my favorite performance of the whole season. So funky and smooth! Please upload more! I love it when you get to see the band's perspective for gigs like this and I feel their talent is somewhat unappreciated. It must take a lot to get into this gig and be flexible enough to play different genres and make it sound awesome in the process. One thing I'm wondering though is how you guys rehearse for blind auditions. Do you practice with the aspiring contestants beforehand?
wow... you are too kind.. more coming soon, i promise! :)
Yeah boyeeeeee!!! Drum butter. And such good sound mix. No iPhone mic! 😂😀👍🏼
haha... no iPhone mic indeed!
Perfect groove Nate, great job!
wow... thanx LK... totally flattered!
Really awesome to see your work from this angle! Very inspiring :)
flattered that you think so! Thank you! :)
voce e o melhor !!!! parabens !!!
muito obrigado! :)
Awesome!
:)
I've been in awe of your drummin for awhile now man. You play soooo many genres and always sound great. I thought you'd have millions of subscribers. Wtf is wrong with people. You're great please keep it up.
haha... "millions"... nah... not so much... but man... thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate it...
You're an artist. It's like watching someone paint... Amazing...
you flatter me Matthew... thank you very much man!
My "chart" for this tune:
"1234"-i(kik)4-V8-C(pocket)8-V8-C8-D8+1(rit)-crash
Very intrigued by your charting system. Can you give us a "key" so we can understand it properly?
I use a very similar system when i chart. There really isn't a "Key" per se' you basically follow the verses and choruses of the tune. "1234" is the count off-- (kik) reminds him what drum is of emphasis for 4 bars--V8 is the verse for 8 bars--C(pocket) is the chorus for 8 bars playing the main groove----V8 verse for 8 bars-C8 is Chorus for 8 bars- D8+1 (Rit)-crash. I'm not sure what the "D" stands for but this is when he switches to the ride cymbal. I would notate "solo" or "sax solo" for 8 bars then 1 (Ritard.) slow down and end with a crash. I hope that helps. definitely try this with any song you hear to get used to charting this way. I've been doing it for years, it's pretty quick and easy, then add your own notation to it!! Rock on!!
Thanks thundersnare. Yes, that help's a lot. I was wondering what D stood for as well during the sax solo. I will certainly try to employ this in my song learning.
Glenn Perea Right on!
D = DRIVE... :)
Michael Sanchez, I remember this performance. It's awesome to watch from another perspective ...
You could post new videos of this new season... I love that guy Chris Blue, maybe Superstition is a good one for us to watch u playing ... Greetings from Brazil bro :)
working on it! :)
Hi Nate, earlier you mentioned that the whole band uses a click. Can I know if that's set to the loudest in your entire mix? Is it blasting loud kind? I find that when I play greater dynamics like riding the ride/crash, the click got masked off
Nate do you run the camera system directly to the board for the sound???
Nice Nate! Thanks for sharing. What kind of splashes are you using near the hats? Love your feel and groove for the tune!
11" K hybrid splash, 12" A Custom splash :) Thanx man... rock on!
I love my 11" K hybrid splash. My favorite cymbal right now.
Hi Nate! Awesome grooving man. Those doubles on the hi hat sounds sharp, did you ever practice stick control on non rebounding surfaces such as pillows etc? I wonder what it is your pov on the subject.
Mmm.... I messed around on pillows for a bit after I heard that that's what Dennis Chambers did, but I didn't love how it affected my technique, so I decided I was okay with slower fluidity vs. raw power... Does that make sense?
Also, thank you for using a full tom kit and taking full advantage of it, and not this 4-piece limited 2 tom junk that everybody uses and sells today. :)
:)
No offense, but not an accurate description. You rock dude so give yourself some credit! No joke, I listen to the artists sing, but as a musician, always listening to what you're doing. You got more than time and feel!! Love what you do with the kick all the time. Keep it up man. Love it. And why did I just discover this!!
now I'm embarrassed... you are too kind... thank you so much... I really appreciate it and I'll try my very best to keep serving the songs and putting good stuff out there! :)
Hi Nate - great track - are you playing al these tracks for the show with or without click? And could you give me a reference to read about your notation or charting system?
Pretty much everything we play on the show is almost always played to a click... all day, everyday... even when things sound rubato, we're often hearing a click, even if it's tempo mapped, speeding up or slowing down or we're ritarding against it... there's almost always a click... there have been exceptions, but they are rare. It's television, so time parameters are VERY specific and the best way to be spot on overtime is to negotiate a click track through each tune. Also... here's my chart for this one...
"1234"-i(kik)4-V8-C(pocket)8-V8-C8-D8+1(rit)-crash
it's not too crazy...
Dear Nate!
Thanks for the reply - regarding your charting - is that system you use self invented - or did you learn it somewhere else - I remember a Modern Drummer article where you talked about it, I like it as it is very compressed.
Do you include fills in a detailed way there too?
Thanks for your time
Christian, Vienna
self-invented... and ever-evolving... :)
Fantastic as always! I feel bad for that contestant, he deserves more. Have you ever given some tips on drumming to Adam? Lol just curious.
Yeah, I do share stuff with him sometimes, but I'm not sure he's going on and like,... practicing... lol...
Do you know how long Adam has been playing drums for? He def seems capable of holding it down from the clips I've seen for example the Beatles tune with Laith last season, and some brief clips from Voice rehearsals. From what I have seen he seems like he could definitely back a band smacking the skins ha.
Hmm... dunno... but what I most appreciate about hit drumming is that he plays songs behind the kit... he doesn't just plays lick lick lick... chop chop chop... I dig that...
oh my gosh, this is beautiful, congrats nate you are incredible, sorry for my english, i still Learning
all good... and thank you so much!
Just found you, awesome playing!
flux andromeda THANKEEZ!
SOU SEU FÃ AQUI DO BRASIL...
VERY GOOD!!!
BR BR HUE
Umm... not sure about the language... but thank you !
:)
The doctor of dynamics
haha... that's a pretty high post D! lol...
Well deserved Nate! Some great drummers look like they work hard at playing. You and Steve Gadd make it look so fluid and easy.
Umm... I'm sorry... did you just put my name in the same sentence with Steve Gadd???? holy shit... I'm nowhere NEAR that... but that's VERY high flattery... thank you.. :)
Oh yes!!
:)
Eargasmic!!!
good nate..thnk for sharing
right on man! :)
you look tired that moment..
Okay that fill breakdown I was requesting... it's not a triplet thing.. just 16ths.... it's at time 1:36 on this vid.. I see what it is... I see that one key (and difficulty for me) is starting it with the left hand on snare on downbeat 1. Love that 16th note accent left hand on the hat and so love the evenly spaced 4 tom hits in a beautiful pitch decent, BAM... that is becoming my fav signature Nate fill. GENIUS. makes so much funk feel and so orig. I would steal it if I could do it. :) Time to practice. But I need MORE TOMS. :)
haha, wahooo, I'm slowing it down on the UA-cam playback speed adjuster,, hahaha. 👍🏼
Okay, watching it slow and again and again... I see why I thought some kinda triplet feel in there.. I think cause doing a 1/4 note triplet with the right hand as you go down the toms. LOOOOVE IT!!!!
I keep watching.. okay it's officially my fav nate fill ever. With the kick in there too. whoa. uses the full pitch range of the kit and I think that's why it's so powerful. goosebumps every time. I hear it in other songs you do.. don't ever stop. :) :)
hahaha... you're silly! :) thank you B!
riquisimo, delicioso!!!!!!
You remind me of Steve Gadd, Nate. Great job.
Stop it PG! hahaha... -but thank you so much for that compliment man... Gadd is LEGEND! Rushmore of drummers! you flatter me putting my name in the same sentence... :)
Nate Morton it's good to be a humble person, but you're one of the best drummers out there. It's very rare to come across this type of drummers. the type that can adapt to any song regardless of the genre. Not to mention the humongous amount of songs you gotta learn and perform in a very narrow time...this goes for the whole band actually, which you guys have perfectly shaped thanks to the great chemistry you have with each other.
wow... thank you so much... Appreciation and gratitude...
Please upload the "Livin' on a Prayer" (Sa'Rayah) drums video. Heard the song and immediately fell for the drum part! :)
Hmm... I don't whether or not we shot that one... :/
Cool sweet classy......I wish Phil Collins did more drum cams when he was with Genesis
that's a pro
sweeet!
:)
What fucking feel he has holy shit. Man I should of went to Berkeley instead of Eastman I guess.
haha... stop it man... I don't think I could've gotten into Eastman... I think the legit stuff woulda killed me!
The first snare tom fill gave me stank face
!!!!!!!!!
:)
You are such an inspiration for my playing Nate!!! :)
Kostas Milonas you are too kind.... thank you KM! I'll do me best to keep doing my best! :)
:) :) :)
Reminiscent of the Late Great Marvin Mcquitty.
Sheesh... I miss that cat... Gone WAY too soon... -sigh... That said, thank you... you flatter me...
Firm hands
Hey Nate, it's Perry from Boston. I just discovered your page. I'm an idiot. Thinking I was all internet savvy and shit. Love this clip and the smooth ass feel. Props to Brother Bill Withers. Keep up the excellence my friend. If you can subscribe to my YT page. Just a bunch of old and new stuff I've done. Hope to see you when you come back east.
Dude... thank you so much Perry! You and me are overdue another Border Cafe hang... sheesh man... wish I could get back out East sooner than later... fingers crossed..
