  • Thank goodness my gig is all about time and feel, because that's pretty much all I got. If you're looking for gospel chops, blistering technique and jaw-dropping licks, you have come to the wrong place, but if you enjoy getting a sneak peak into what's kept me employed as a professional musician, well here you go!
    This video is the drumming performance of the Bill Withers tune, Just The Two Of Us, as performed by Michael Sanchez during The Voice Season 11, Knockout Rounds. Michael KILLED it... so talented that cat... -also a quick shout out to "Kenny E"... that's Eric, our keyboardist, lending some seriously sincere keyboard sax to that track... :)
    If you'd like to see the performance as it aired, it may be viewed here:
    • Video
    This is the second Drum Cam video since Randy Faustino has been on board mixing sound for these and I'm so excited and proud to say, WOW... the audio is OUTSTANDING!!!! Between Steevo's video editing and Randy's mixes, it's getting to the point where the drumming is the LEAST impressive thing on my "drum cam" vids... lol...
    For so long, I hated hearing my own double strokes... They were wonky and not at all in control. I spent hours practicing them... One thing I found that really helped was playing my double stroke rolls slowly and working on snapping my fingers to my palm in order to accent the second stroke of the double in each hand. I don't have the crispiest doubles in the world but I’m happy my diddling around on the hats has some amount of definition. Beyond that… welcome back to many of my old familiar licks… they’re like family to me at this point! :)
    I hope there is something to be gained by viewing these drum cam vids… It is always my hope to provide a bit of insight into what I’m doing back there in the shadows on The Voice…
    I hope you enjoy!

    Damn simple beat, but well locked in the sound of that snare is perfect. The best cover for this song by far.

    I've been drumming for 9 years on and off now, and for last 2 years I have only played 4 times. I just watched all 17 of your drum cams and have never been so inspired to get back into the books and get some grooves going again. Thanks so much for these videos Nate, awesome!!!

    Nate, you are freaking incredible! Such a perfect mix of groove and flash. Just watching you makes me a better drummer.
    Please, please, please! keep posting these vids from The Voice. Hearing that fill at :49 in Sledgehammer a few weeks ago knocked me off the couch. Then when I saw the Drum Cam 15 vid I fell over again seeing how you did it. Driving the wife crazy 'cause I'm always rewinding the Voice to hear something you did again. Keep up the great work and keep showing us! The Nate Morton Army is out here and we want to see it!

      Thanx BG... I'm having a lot of fun doing them and sharing... When I was a kid, there was a show on BBC (broadcast on PBS) called Rock School... it was a band and each episode, they'd break down different styles... what was the role of each instrument within that style and they'd interview well known players who played whatever the style was for that episode... I've always wanted to do a show like that in the US... you know... bring back that kind of education... That seems unlikely atm, but in lieu of that, I'm REALLY enjoying getting to do my own miniature version of Rock School... maybe I should start sharing more about what I think about when I'm playing particular genre's or break down more fills or groove that I post up... Thanx for checking out the vids my man!

    • @BenjaminGib
      @BenjaminGib 8 років тому

      Oh wow wow, I love this, and that yes, you are getting to do your own little version of that show. So awesome. How did I miss that show??? we are the same age about. And Yes yes, I'm sure all would agree that we'd love to hear every thought behind what is going on. Hey and if Steve ever gets slammed too much and needs some help with editing, hit me up.. I'm a pro broadcast editor, and would love to play with this stuff and help. I'll send you an email too. Oh and YES, there is that one fill you get to often, (never over done, cause it's so freakin power and funk triplet funk thing as you go around), I'd love to hear the breakdown on that and where did you first come up with that one!

    Best all round drummer out there right now for sure, my favorite thing about Nate is that he isn't scared to make these songs his own and not to discredit the other band members one bit because the talent seen here is unbelievable, however their sound would not be as unique without this super talent coming from the throne..glad I came across you Mr, Nate..you got me feeling motivated my man...#onlyreasoniwatchthevoice #goals

    Amazing drumming. This is my favorite performance of the whole season. So funky and smooth! Please upload more! I love it when you get to see the band's perspective for gigs like this and I feel their talent is somewhat unappreciated. It must take a lot to get into this gig and be flexible enough to play different genres and make it sound awesome in the process. One thing I'm wondering though is how you guys rehearse for blind auditions. Do you practice with the aspiring contestants beforehand?

    My "chart" for this tune:
    "1234"-i(kik)4-V8-C(pocket)8-V8-C8-D8+1(rit)-crash

    • @glennperea2604
      @glennperea2604 8 років тому

      Very intrigued by your charting system. Can you give us a "key" so we can understand it properly?

    • @thundersnare
      @thundersnare 7 років тому

      I use a very similar system when i chart. There really isn't a "Key" per se' you basically follow the verses and choruses of the tune. "1234" is the count off-- (kik) reminds him what drum is of emphasis for 4 bars--V8 is the verse for 8 bars--C(pocket) is the chorus for 8 bars playing the main groove----V8 verse for 8 bars-C8 is Chorus for 8 bars- D8+1 (Rit)-crash. I'm not sure what the "D" stands for but this is when he switches to the ride cymbal. I would notate "solo" or "sax solo" for 8 bars then 1 (Ritard.) slow down and end with a crash. I hope that helps. definitely try this with any song you hear to get used to charting this way. I've been doing it for years, it's pretty quick and easy, then add your own notation to it!! Rock on!!

    • @glennperea2604
      @glennperea2604 7 років тому

      Thanks thundersnare. Yes, that help's a lot. I was wondering what D stood for as well during the sax solo. I will certainly try to employ this in my song learning.

    Hi Nate, earlier you mentioned that the whole band uses a click. Can I know if that's set to the loudest in your entire mix? Is it blasting loud kind? I find that when I play greater dynamics like riding the ride/crash, the click got masked off

    Hi Nate! Awesome grooving man. Those doubles on the hi hat sounds sharp, did you ever practice stick control on non rebounding surfaces such as pillows etc? I wonder what it is your pov on the subject.

    • @NateMortonDrums
      @NateMortonDrums  6 років тому

      Mmm.... I messed around on pillows for a bit after I heard that that's what Dennis Chambers did, but I didn't love how it affected my technique, so I decided I was okay with slower fluidity vs. raw power... Does that make sense?

    Hi Nate - great track - are you playing al these tracks for the show with or without click? And could you give me a reference to read about your notation or charting system?

    • @NateMortonDrums
      @NateMortonDrums  7 років тому

      Pretty much everything we play on the show is almost always played to a click... all day, everyday... even when things sound rubato, we're often hearing a click, even if it's tempo mapped, speeding up or slowing down or we're ritarding against it... there's almost always a click... there have been exceptions, but they are rare. It's television, so time parameters are VERY specific and the best way to be spot on overtime is to negotiate a click track through each tune. Also... here's my chart for this one...
      "1234"-i(kik)4-V8-C(pocket)8-V8-C8-D8+1(rit)-crash
      it's not too crazy...

    • @schafberg3
      @schafberg3 7 років тому

      Dear Nate!
      Thanks for the reply - regarding your charting - is that system you use self invented - or did you learn it somewhere else - I remember a Modern Drummer article where you talked about it, I like it as it is very compressed.
      Do you include fills in a detailed way there too?
      Thanks for your time
      Christian, Vienna

He def seems capable of holding it down from the clips I've seen for example the Beatles tune with Laith last season,and some brief clips from Voice rehearsals. From what I have seen he seems like he could definitely back a band smacking the skins ha.

    Okay that fill breakdown I was requesting... it's not a triplet thing.. just 16ths.... it's at time 1:36 on this vid.. I see what it is... I see that one key (and difficulty for me) is starting it with the left hand on snare on downbeat 1. Love that 16th note accent left hand on the hat and so love the evenly spaced 4 tom hits in a beautiful pitch decent, BAM... that is becoming my fav signature Nate fill. GENIUS. makes so much funk feel and so orig. I would steal it if I could do it. :) Time to practice. But I need MORE TOMS. :)

      @BenjaminGib 8 років тому

      I keep watching.. okay it's officially my fav nate fill ever. With the kick in there too. whoa. uses the full pitch range of the kit and I think that's why it's so powerful. goosebumps every time. I hear it in other songs you do.. don't ever stop. :) :)

      Nate Morton it's good to be a humble person, but you're one of the best drummers out there. It's very rare to come across this type of drummers. the type that can adapt to any song regardless of the genre. Not to mention the humongous amount of songs you gotta learn and perform in a very narrow time...this goes for the whole band actually, which you guys have perfectly shaped thanks to the great chemistry you have with each other.

    Hey Nate, it's Perry from Boston. I just discovered your page. I'm an idiot. Thinking I was all internet savvy and shit. Love this clip and the smooth ass feel. Props to Brother Bill Withers. Keep up the excellence my friend. If you can subscribe to my YT page. Just a bunch of old and new stuff I've done. Hope to see you when you come back east.
