Skiers are religious about this binding :) I have watched my friends who think they are great slowly get annoyed with the heel piece spinning around when freeriding and slowly getting other bindings.
They might be great but I have never owned them so it couldn't be in this video :)
@@StompItTutorials main issue I've had with pivots is the brakes being such a pain to replace. By the way they fixed the step in pressure required on the 2021 jester (and other marker royal famy bindings) - just thought I'd mention it

i trust my pivots the most. they dont release on butters even at low din. only on the jib ski tho

Bindings are so important. My right knee is still suffering from a Marker Rotomat (Explodimat) failure to release at slow speed in crud in 1980.
I absolutely love the look of the older marker jester and griffin heel piece, even though they do hurt to hit yourself with
STH16 all the way. Love hearing you rant about anything, keep it up!
My friends in Mammoth didn't think much of Marker bindings. 1 buddy had news skis w/Marker Jespers and he had to use his pole strap to yank up 1 of that big Jesper back binding. I rode Makers for yrs on my ancient Volant Machete Sin skis, they always seemed solid. I've got Marker Jespers on my new virgin Volkl Revolt twin tips (for freeride/pow & park laps), so very glad to see my friend in the Swiss Alps rides the same bindings for the park!

STH is a fav among binding techs as well, super consistent release behavior. Toe's pivot and rotation also more likely to save you in backwards tisting fall. Very sturdy and reliable I have them on all my non race skis for those reasons. Tyrolia's 12/14 din diagonal bindings are also tops for release consistency. Never run pivots, had jesters - their solid but a pita to get into in any loose snow...
Look pivot fanboys incoming in XD btw, you forgot the mention the CAST freetour binding, been on the market much longer then the Shift, Duke PT or the BAM Pindung
Just got the Shift. Love it.
I have an old pair of pre m6’s….yes they are old….actually were a pro deal from the winter of 89/90….they came with Solomon 757 composites….probably about 100 days on them….they were put aside decades ago…torque tested them 2 year’s ago….they passed.

I am a lighter skier and I considered the look pivots but winded up mounting my Bent Chetler 100s with some Marke Griffon 13 IDs, essentially a budget Jester.
the pivot has 15th version now

Great vid. Never ever had a problem with Look, but yeah, if you're dancing around on the ramps, I can see how you wouldn't want 2 spikes sticking out the back waiting to get you. And 16 DIN bindings, OMG, I've just been called an intermediate skier... ouch, oh well.

I used to ride the shift...
I think its a good binding for Freeride oriented riders.
For me it was just to heavy in comparison to modern pin bindings. The climbing aid sucks a bit.
But sure, for the ride down its sweet.
For my light 88mm touring ski I use a Dynafit superlight 175. I'm impressed how well they perform!
They have a weight of 175 g per binding. I mean that's insane!
Having to state, that I use this ski for skimo only.
On my other touring skis I love the Salomon MTN. Such a nice an simply binding!

Have you ever tried look pivots. They are very good all around imo and they make them in a range of dins to fit most skiers

Which binding is the lightest? Also, where do you have your bindings mounted on the Bent Chetlers, +1, +2, +3? from the line?? Are you going to stick with the Atomic Bent Chetlers again this year? I'm thinking of picking up a pair for Big Sky MT Skiing this season....

I have the bent chetler 100 with the shift binding and I love it, use them for freeride, touring, groomers and even a bit of park, best all around setup in my opinion (btw I'm 60 kg so din 13 is plenty enough)
Do they work well for groomers?
@@nelldesnell2569 when it's icy they tend to not stay on the edges but if you ski them well enough and really push them when you make turns you can have fun even in icier conditions. With that being said I am not sure if I would buy them just to ski on the slopes
I've had similar issues with my kingpins as the Salomon one. Most of the time it's fine but occasionally it's ejects when I don't want it to. Seems to release too easily (on rotational ejects rather than up and down) but worried about cranking up the din too much in case I wreck my knees. Not sure if this is just how they're meant to work, a quirk of the rotation being in the heel rather than the toe, or if they're not actually working properly.
I just bought the shift bindings this year. I was hesitant because I had read about the brakes and heel releasing for some people, but I am an intermediate skier so I’m hopeful they’ll be good for my skill level. No 360s or nose butters for me yet haha
I ski patrol 5 days a week in the Salomon shift. You'll be just fine.

I'm assuming popping out during butters is an issue with the afd adjustment as well as forward pressure? Just got back into skiing a couple years back after a long 15+ year hiatus. Want to start learning those now that I have my base skills back and a pair of skis suited more toward that style. Just up in arms at how burly of a binding I should get being 6'1 215lbs(97.5kg) and a 335mm BSL. Pivot 15 is what I've been eyeing.

Isnt your DIN supposed to be at 7.5-8 considering your height/weight? (Asking because you dont recommend the shift bindings for tricks..how much din do you have to add to your calculated din, if you want to do tricks?)
You didn't mention any negatives about the Solomon. Do they still need constant adjustment on the wings to keep your boots from rattling around like when I was a little children's?

Hello Jens are the heel pieces of the warden series the same as the STH2 WTR series also how do the warden series compare to the Marker Jester

The marker Royal bindings from 2+ years ago with the toe height adjustment under the boot was absolutely terrible. Once they moved the adjuster in front of the toe it was infinitely easier to mount and adjust. I hated the old ones.
Can you do a video on jackets and pants?
Every review recommends Arc’teryx for top quality and north face freedom pants for budget. I personally own freedom pants and don’t really love them. Too baggy and heavy for freestyle.
jens, i just got my first pair of twintip park skis. they mounted salomon z12 bindings.. i know they aren’t the best but will they get the job done for a beginner freestyle skier? thanks so much!!
Absolutely 🤟
As mentioned, the Shift toe binding is working perfect and the horizontal flexibility is as good as in any other pist binding on the market. When it comes to the weight of the set up its on the heel binding where the developers have saved most of the weight and this savings comes at a price. The heel piece lack the vertical flexibility as on a ordinary pist orientated binding at that means that the release of the binding will come to the release point with less vertical movement/flexibility of the boot. All binding producers are trying to get as much flexibility out of the bindings together with the ability of the binding to snap back the ski boot to normal riding position not having the on/off factor when it comes to the point of release. We have to keep in mind that the Shift is a hybrid binding and that the weight is far under the other hybrid pist orientated bindings on the market. I believe that Shift is a brilliant binding taking the weight/performance in consideration but if the Shift is not tough enough buy LOOK pivot. Why are all mogul skiers using these bindings?
AFD design has changed a bit over the decades I've been skiing. And I have to say I'm not a fan of the moving plates. I've had 2 pairs of Look bindings with these where they failed rendering the binding useless. The first was a pair of SPX12 and on that occasion I nearly had an accident because of the failure, as I nearly cause a pre-release in the XL line in the park. The second was a pair of Pivot 14, which failed within a month, and Look basically told me to GTF when I approached them for a refund. The shop that sold me them were also completely unwilling to refund me saying it was a manufacturing fault. I also then had to fit new toe pieces to the ski as a result.... I never had any problems with release on the STH type low friction plates, and still don't they seem to work just fine for years on end. I'm not at all convinced that the moving plates are in any way advantageous. Maybe for beginner level skiers, but certainly not if you're skiing strongly.
Hi, I have been looking for a binding to use on a freeride/touring setup, but I would like to hit the park and some jumps as well. I would pare the bindings with the BC 100. Would the Shift 13 work in this scenario (I am worried about the park use) or is it better to just have separate all mountain and touring setups?
Sure that will work but it can be costly to break a touring binding or boot. But remember you gotta use a touring boot in the Shift binding. Which might not be what you want to use in the park. By the sounds of it you will not ride that much park and it shall work.

Yes I have skied them a bunch in the past but not for the last year or two. They are not in great conditions anymore and a fan saw them in the background and insisted on buying them. Now I don't have them anymore.

Hey Eli, It is also a good binding I have skied some on it but not more than a few weeks. It works very well like its big brorther the 16 version. The main difference is that this one does not have the sideway adjustability and the lower din.

Never had an issue with them. They have actually never released unless they were supposed to. Also they look much better in my opinion
Bc 100 and Warden 13 are a great combo
they're awesome bindings! I've had them for a while and never had a problem, using the bc 100 aswell. Strong recommedation!
Hello! i just wonder, is it weird to put different brands in a ski? Like i am a new skier and wonder if it is weird to put like a salomon-binding with a k2 sight ski?😁 Btw i really enjoy watching your videos!!!

What is the difference between the jester 16 and the jester 18 pro. I don’t see the point of the pro ones except if your are reaaaally heavy.

I'm not sure but i guess the point is the material. Same as FKS/Pivot - 14 are kinda composite and 16 are full metal. At least this is a good reason about weight difference:)
Not a fan of the Jesters/Griffon, shitty heals IMO and the toe adjustment functions is poor. And the toe piece builds up snow and is a pain in the bum to clear out
1 - Pivots - they really are the superior binding
2 - Wardens, best toe adjustments, doesn't build up and snow, easy heal to step in.
3 - Attacks ( So under rated)
Shifts are great but do have a few flaws/limitations, especially for a bigger guy like me.
New Dukes could fill this gap, otherwise the CAST system is the way to go for backcountry charging.

@8:00 Seems Shift has pretty wide stoppers to begin with. I just mounted a 94-wide ski with 90mm brake width, and it is pretty much perfect width. When the brake releases, the "claw" at the end just barely knocks the edge of the top sheet. But it tucks inwards pretty nicely, hangs off the side just slightly 90's style.
But anyways, it's farely safe to size down on the brake size, depending on the ski structure.

Salomon Shift is the worst binding I ever owned. Mechanism kept loosing under toe, terrible transition cuz icing up, lost skis on groom at high speed. Not recommended.
What's Din?
Manuilay basically how much force will be required for the binding to release. A higher DIN will require more force, a lower DIN less. Optimal DIN is calculated by a combination of your weight, boot size, and ski style.
DIN is a technical certification institute. But with ski bindings, its a commonly used term for the binding release setting.
Every mogul skier on the planet uses Rossi fks/ look pivot. Guess why
You don’t talk at all about one of it not the most important part of the binding, the different elasticity in the bindings. It is such an important spec of a binding that it hardly talked about.
