Yep, $700 jeans - OK, they're $660, but $700 sounds better - why would anyone pay that much for denim? You might be surprised to learn that Tanuki's "aizome" jeans sell out lightning fast, because there are scores of customers that revere the skill and materials required to produce this fabric, as well as the aesthetics of the fabric itself. In this video, a representative of Tanuki explains the "why" behind aizome.

I started off thinking there is no way they can be worth the price and then remembered that if you want something that isn't produced by slaves or children you have to pay a certain amount, then on top of that if you want the best materials you have to pay a bit more, add the unique techniques used and the amount of labour that goes into these jeans and I can understand how someone who loves denim would not mind paying that price.
Here Here! I wouldn’t purchase these but you understand dude.
Certainly an amazing process, Tanuki are definitely on my list to buy!
Thanks Nick, always entertained by your fresh content
Thanks Devis! I loved making this one.
More denim!!!
Love the variety here!
I've been waiting for this review, Nick! Awesome pair of jeans!
Thanks!! Glad you liked it.
Wow! Great video Nick! I never knew! Lol.. that was super interesting. I could almost justify the cost after watching this. It’s always good to hear the back story on a product.
Thanks Tim! I was really interested by this and loved making it.
Great new Video happy to see another denim review on your channel!!
Love that you loved it Mr Meyer
Amazing video as always. Tanuki have definitely been one of my top brands to check out and plan on biting the bullet and getting a pair of theirs soon.
Thanks man, this one is special to me
Great interview, would have been nice to get more of your review of them as well
It's not as soft as a lot of jeans but I love the fit (high rise relax taper) and they stretch a good couple of inches to your body. Everything else I'd say about the jeans I put in this video haha!
Look into indigo dyed "sashiko" and prepare yourself for the next level. Think cotton "chain mail".
Great review, Nick.
Appreciate it my man
Excellent video!
dude it's one of my all time favorites, definitely the least viewed of my favorites so i'm really appreciative you made this comment!
So aside from some cosmetic quirks, the only thing making these jeans so awfully expensive is the novelty of an extremely inefficient manufacturing process. Got it.
You don't got it at all, Naught!
Great educational piece Nick, really top shelf..... Happy Easter from Brisbane.... it’s raining 🌧 but the beers are cold and the BBQ is still working fine.. 😂
Hi Brisbane!!! Hope to see you later this year.
I got a couple pairs of PBJ jeans made with Tokushima indigo. They are amazing.
Hey Nick, I might have already asked about these but do you plan on reviewing the RM Williams Surry sneaker in the future?
I picked up a size 34 around a yr ago, surprised they still had some for sale.
Don't leave them in the wardrobe. Wear em Nick! Awesome review and amazing product.
Been wearing them hard! They're all over my instagram haha
Not even a denimhead and this was great.
Great video as always! Out of curiosity, what do you think of your Grant Stone chelseas many months after your first review? I saw them in one of your b-roll shots in this video, and they look great!
Oh I like them a lot! They're a little stubbier/flatter than I like in a chelsea but the craftsmanship is great
So fabric aside, how much does it actuall wear? How much stretch in waist and thigh?
Awesome. Never going to buy them, but super interesting!
That's the reaction I want!
Fascinating review! And with more than a few potshots at Naked and Famous thrown in there, hah (Emperor/King of slub shade detected). Still nice to have both as options in the market, however niche it may be.
So ultra niche! I love diving deep into this stuff
Hey, love your content. Can you do a review on Levi’s made & crafted series with Japanese denim?
Only pure blue Japan and momotaro jeans are available in my country and they are very limited in designs and cuts.
I'd love to hear some nice jeans for boots that don't stretch like these japanese ones....what other brands would you recommend?
Ben on UA-cam for over 10 years and still have under 100 liked videos but you fucking earned this shit
I thought it was an “April’s fools day”
Did you ever review Volleys?
Awesome video, would you be able to do some videos on denim jackets at some point?
Believe it or not I don't own one! I don't have enough non-denim pants and I'm afraid of Canadian tuxedos lol but I'll get to it
@@Stridewise ah ok don’t worry, I’ve just been interested lately in how certain brand’s raw denim jackets compare to their raw denim jeans
@@Stridewise don't be afraid of the Canadian tuxedo embrace it!! I wear a lighter one than my jeans so it doesn't look so bad. I'm also a Canadian tho lol...
Is that a pistol lake Henley?
Just checked their website, insta love for import duties paid, I really like that I can pay without having to second guess if I'll be charged more on arrival.
Momotaro have that too and it's really a nice way of buying stuff from Japan
Hard agree. I also like Indonesian brands that include shipping with the cost heh
Imagine $400 jeans in 1980. Harvey's men's clothing store in Dayton, Oh had a brand I can't recall the name. No two pair was the same
When you wake up at 6am
And the zoom meetings at 6:02
Enjoy the jeans! If I had these I would not wash them.
all that precious indigo going down the drain!!
I'm a pleb. Wouldn't not washing them leach indigo color on everything the jean touches? I used to have this issue with some jeans(just standard stuff) and I have been washing all the new jeans to get the indigo out before wearing.
Sounds like great marketing rather than actual value.
You're paying for a harder way of creating something rather than something worth that much more.
Do you need to be young to be interested in selfedge jeans what is the criteria I am older so is it a fashion statement, I have acquired a pair I like japanese products and thats what got me interested I used to go to work on japanese motor bike I have watch and razor japanese?
You can wear whatever you like! All ages wear jeans :)
These aren't made in india folks! ( Rupees) had some selvedge jeans I don't wear just flip ! Very nice !
👀 AmZing. This was an education. And for everyone saying they are too expensive, you have obviously never heard of Chanel, Gucci, Prada......who charge big money of single items of clothing or a bag. Even premium perfumes Start at £200/250. And perfume is disposal. Just think of these jeans as a designer piece.
Struggling to pick out exactly where in Ireland that guy's accent is from.
Try TCB's 50's slim straight. I believe they also have a English speaking person who does interviews or at least translates.
I've been thinking about the 50s or the 60s jeans! you're reading my mind. they're available here in nyc at blue in green maybe i'll go try them
Great vid man
Gee that brother is the right man for his job he knows his stuff and his passion shows .
So in a nutshell if you were after epic fades these aren’t really the pair for that .
Unlike PBJ’s are a fast fader
Yeah that's a fair assessment, these are more about looking great from the get go. Glad you liked the video!
how much do they stretch?
A good inch and a half
@@Stridewise thanks, hope they are fading well.
I hate the fading so much but love how like boots they wear in to suit your body, walk etc. it's such a mixed bag with selvedge to me haha
Speaking of language barrier, Ryo from Two Cats Brand really help that company with his communication skill.
oh great, thanks for the tip!
@@Stridewise welcome boss. I chatted with him for quite some time before getting their 505. A sweet man and my first beloved Japanese jean.
cotton from texas :) we have a lot
"There are only a handful of artisans able to execute this exquisite process"
"So they dunk the yarn in dye then remove it slowly"
hey that is a vast oversimplification
Levi’s 501 made in USA is the best but these days l can’t find any. In my country either made in china, pakistan, mexico, bangladesh or egypt. Is Levi’s no longer produced in the USA?
Since the year 2000. Lol
Everything is made in China. Smdh
It sounds really complicated and interesting. 700 bucks interesting 🤔.
14:07 Really? Why wouldn't Japanese denim companies talk to you? You're like the ambassador of raw denim for both aficionados and the uninitiated, man! What gives with these companies?
I think it's because a) they seldom have native english speakers on staff and b) they like to be mysterious
Ill stick with my uniqlo selvege denim..and i will wash it..i repeat i will wash it every other weak..
Why? You just put unnecessary stress on the jeans. Do it once a month at the absolute most and the jeans will last you a lot longer.
intense
Straight dope. Love how Japanese denim is a gateway drug to Japanese aesthetic theory, which we in the West need badly to learn to love the imperfections, flaws, and general finitude of life lived against that ever-looming background of a ticking clock of mortality. (When I was there, I remember seeing jeans being made on a handloom in the storefront; those were over a grand. Would've also liked to hear the details on the sizing... Still, great video. Love that Tanuki dude's 360 hoodie too.)
Why do americans n some european guys love to wear slim tapered jeans. Looks soo funny.
momotaro have a denim that is made on an old fashioned kimono loom with an embroidered label bespoke for 2000. insane. even more insane is that once you see them you want them
Bravestar is the only brand for me
Yup that's the way to go
Nope, I’d say iron heart, samurai are superior Japanese denim.
jeans are made to be worn. People buying them as collectors and putting them on shelves are the worst...
what about if they collect baseballs but don't play with them
@@Stridewise well, as far as i am concerned, baseballs are not a piece of clothing so their usefulness is quite less obvious. Moreover, I am not a baseball specialist but I thought that most baseballs considered as worth collecting are signed and/or game used . I feel that a used denim has less value than a pristine one, even signed by a Japanese guy.. : am I wrong ? Anyway, personally I collect paintings and books and I wear my sneakers and jeans, not the other way around …
Before selling jeans that guy used to sell Ice to the Eskimos!!!
well i dont think you get the point..
@@muhammadaliclay8976 The point is to get you to pay $660 for some jeans that you can get for $39.99
@@paul_domici haha wow....
@@caseysmith508 why buy a Porsche when a 98 corolla will get you to work and back? Lol
You can buy one share of $TSLA for less than $700.
Jeans, T-shirt’s, socks, and underwear are some things I will never spend a lot on.
Now you're just pissing on my head and telling me it's raining. Give me levis anyday
I'll stick with my Wranglers.
I love my Target and Costco jeans :)
It's just for bragging rights! You know these jeans cost $700 bucks...
Thanks but no thanks! I will stick to my Carhartt or Lee jeans.
love you Stridewise but none of your jeans fit you properly. lol. you wear them too tight especially for your body shape. thats my opinion of course. Stay away from relaxed fit.
These ones are too small but I didn’t want to bother tanuki with a return haha but like in general I’m so unlucky with sizing. I measure myself and my favorite jeans and they still don’t fit well and THEN you’ve got the fact that you never know how much jeans will stretch assargh
Im sorry dude, no disrespect to you as I know stuff like this gets views, but personally I find products like this disgusting. I can't even justify spending $700 on a smart phone, a tool that plays an incredibly powerful role in my life on a 24/7 basis. This is beyond excessive.
My favorite jeans cost $15 new. In addition to feeling amazing, looking great, and doing everything I want and more. Second favorite, $11 second hand. I wear a pair of jeans 1-2 times a week depending on usage.
The people who buy stuff like this exist on an entirely different plain of existence as far as im concerned.
I agree and disagree. I do understand craftsmanship and the price required. There are a lot of products like watches, shoes and cars where a cheap pair would work well but people are willing to pay more for craftsmanship. These are not for me, jeans that don’t get worn makes no sense, but I would give my wife’s kidney for a Ferrari which I probably wouldn’t drive. Each to their own.
$700 dollar jeans holy moly. amazing denim but hypsters are going broke bc of this type of quality. jeans are made to work in not just for style. real men wear jeans to work in imo, that was the purpose of jeans in the first place.
I think there is room for some jeans to be just for show, like how some boots are showy and not something you'd take onto a jobsite. But, "A lot of people just want them in their collection, they're not wearing them" no kidding. I kind of feel like clothing is at least meant to be worn, even if it's not something you can resign yourself to ripping or staining.
@@elsa_g that's the scary part of collecting.
So much BS to call out here. Firstly, if the cotton was picked in the US, it isn't handpicked. Every bale of cotton in the US is picked by machine. Secondly, the sales rep talks about how the yarn is handspun. This is again BS as I guarantee no one is spinning yarn by hand in Japan. He also talks about also threads make up yarn, yarn and thread are the same exact thing, just two different names for the same thing so it sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Yall got to be kidding..U guys are.being p l a y e d! You could donate that $$$to a food pantry and help others...priorities are messed up🤦♀️
If only products where made like this more often, with integrity. Love my Iron Heart denim, very funny seeing the normies get mad at us for enjoying these luxury items when they themselves are broke.
