Pleading the 5th cannot be held against you in a court of law, all it means is that you have the right to not say that you are guilty, or to give a testimony for the opposition. Or a basic human right. But yeah the gop pleads the 5th to much

While in a criminal trial it allows for initial avoidance of self-incrimination, in a civil trial it alludes to guilt by it's very obstructive nature. This is why attorneys usually advise against it unless such testimony would lead directly to self-admission of guilt. Taking the 5th amendment is typically done as a delay tactic until if/when evidence is uncovered that incriminates the defendant.
If no evidence can be provided by prosecution, the defendant in effect wins. It's a risk worth taking in some instances.
It's basically saying: "I'm not asserting under oath that I did (or didn't) do the crime(s). I'm saying that it's up to prosecutors to prove that I did using other means of evidence and/or testimonies."
If the prosecution DOES produce evidence and testimonies depicting overwhelming guilt of the defendant, the 5th amendment can be considered by a civil trial jury as intent to obstruct discovery.
