- NRL coaches are under huge amounts of pressure. If their team doesn’t win games, it could mean that they lose their job. So when controversial referee decisions play a role in deciding the match, it can cause coaches to let out their frustrations and blow up. For this list, we are only considering NRL coaches blowing up in the sit down post match media conference which all coaches must attend after the match.

Well it's just like the last 2 and a half years of medical horseshit isn't it? It's clearly a lie but you must never say that.
Yeah that's a very undemocratic rule that is. Fans can voice all they want about bad ref decisions and so can commentators and parts of the media but yet players and coaches can't during press conferences. In fact the rule has autocratic tendencies. Yes match officials don't deserve to be abused and be subjected to vulgar tirades but they do however need to be held accountable for any bad ref decisions that have a major effect on the game as far as momentum is concerned. More or less to do with issuing penalties and potential sin bin calls that are controversial and could have a detrimental impact on the team in which the decision has been made against.
The fact that they are forced to do a press conference yet cant speak their minds without a fine is so wrong.
They should only ever get fined if they accuse them of cheating thats it. And everyone knows they do square up penalties

Of course the Geoff Toovey press conference blow up had to be number one! I still remember that. Can't believe it's been ten years since that famous press conference. I'm pretty sure that particular conference got made into a meme video with the part with Geoff Toovey saying the word "ridiculous" is put on repeat. Absolute classic.

I have said this about sport in general - in particular English football (soccer) that referees should be played the incidents back and asked to explain their decision. One, it saves an hour of Micah Richards winding Roy Keane up on Sky Sports, and 2, if there is something we haven't seen or a slight alternative viewpoint the fans understand the process

Never hear a coach complain when a bad call favours them. If they believe in honesty and consistency, they would point out how their team only won because of the ref.
I wouldn’t agree with you more. It’s about winning on the field fair & square, to why they have umpires adjudicating the game.

Yep, they're not complaining about bad decisions, they're complaining about bad decisions going against them.
Not saying I disagree, but just imagine if you were the winning coach and ypu pointed out some bad calls and then got fined for it. I'm not disagreeing with what you said, I merely saying what if the nrl turns around and slaps anyone for speaking out. Imo I think the refs should have to front up for media questions.
Say what you want about Sticky, he always stands up for his players publicly. The kind of coach any player would run through a brick wall for.
That was a great top 10. But my favourite coaching press conference blow up was Kevin Walters disgust in Queensland's bad loss in the State of Origin against NSW in Perth in 2019. Kevin Walters said that he was fkn pissed off with Queensland's bad loss.

great idea about having the referees be a part of the post-match press conferences. I don't mean to have it all in war with the coaches/captains but be great to put them in front of the media for questions.

Great choice for number 2, Flanno taking the time before the press conference to write up a whole fucking list of referee errors and have it ready to go is all time and I love it, from one of the most laid back guys in the game too. Fantastic.

The only thing I'll say is that iv always been a firm believer that there needs to be a serious look at calls that truly do decide games. The calls that are in the last 10 minutes that lead to points. Those calls just can't be wrong anymore. I know back in the day players just accepted a bad call if they got one because there was one referee and a tmo with probably shitty camera angles etc. Nowadays with 2 referees and 2 touch judges and 3 people in the bunker with multiple camera angles they have absolutely no excuse in getting a decision wrong. Literally no excuse. And the other part i agree with is favouring of certain teams. Most definitely the warriors, Raiders, cowboys are probably the most hard some by team when it comes to decisions. They literally never get any 50/50 calls and always get the howlers. There has to be a weekly review I believe of the refereeing where they need to explain why they made their decision. If a referee makes a wrong call then they should front a media conference and explain how they made the call and why. Have to stop treating them like they are some godlike people who are too soft to front the media.

@@callanmurphy9807 The fine probably wouldn't be as much. And if they're pissed off anyway they might as well not show up and pay whatever the subsequent fine is. I remember Peter Sharp whilst coaching Northern Eagles failed to show up to a post match press conference after they were once humiliated by their opponents.
@@stupendous1068 yeh fair point mate either way human error plays a part hence the reason for the bunker but if they can't do it with slo motion cameras and nearly every angle possible then they shouldn't be in the seat either. I'm a roosters supporter and there's been plenty of times where they should've gotten penalties and same goes for the people they were playing but it got missed 🤦

Great idea - let's have the games cancelled because nobody wants to bother refereeing any more more thanks to the abuse they get from peanut fans and from second-rate coaches who only want to deflect attention away from their own ineptitude. I've got a better idea - any coach who whines like Stuart in future has to referee a televised game the next week. And for every mistake they make they are banned from coaching on game day for that number of weeks.

I LOVE the passion of the coaches - sadly the "officials" have no such passion for the game which is why they are protected and hide away. NRL/Bunker and too many on field officials are WAY below the standards required. Needs changing but wont be sadly.
I remember most of these games, and reckon they have a decent argument as coaches. Ricky Stuart was a fine player, and he also is a great coach. He just says it like it is....

Don’t think it has much to do with the nrl being offended but they don’t like it when coaches insult their referees as they stand by their decisions and don’t won’t a bad look for the game

I’ve always thought the referees were far too protected.
Its because its hard to find good refs. They are paid the least on the field and have to live their lives coping abuse and threats. Imagine being down at the shops with your kids and some fan recognises you and starts abusing you about the latest decision you made in a game that they didn't like. I understand wanting to bash refs over bad calls but at the end of the day there is no game without them.

After watching this, it's amazing to see how nrl have scrubbed the videos on some of these games. No second half of the Penrith manly game, no highlight of peachy try.
I'd be interested to see if all the mistakes these coaches were upset over were scrapped

You should do teams that won the grand final or were minor premiers but within the next few years won the wooden spoon.
I remember many years ago at a press conference, the legendary AFL coach Mick Malthouse demanded that coaches have more freedom of speech at their press conferences, and soon after, he got fined for his comments.
So good... but honestly feel for the coaches. They go so hard in prep, Just to have a wannabe participant get in the way of victory.
Definitely is one of the biggest angers. Not just NRL but in a lot of sports. You cannot question the refs after.
All players are scrutinized for mistakes/choices they make, yet the Refs walk away and aren't questioned to decisions they make? How do you expect players to play at National AND international levels when the Refs are playing junior clubs level?
On top of it all, as the game progresses and more calls are made, players get even more frustrated and the game gets even more out of control.
With all the powers and computer technology they have now days, how is it even possible to make some of the mistakes that they do make? On the other end though, more responsibility should be put on the refs on the field though. They shouldn't be relying bunker or other means to make a decision.
But at the end of the day, they should be sat down like coaches and captains and asked their perspective.
The two coaches the two captains and the ref should be facing the media together , that would be interesting lol , that would bring back the biff

In #5 trent robbo got it all correct. High shot on tupo should have been at least 10 in the bin maybe even send of judging by how they have been referring through that season. The hip drop should be 10 in the bin, and the shot on manu should have been a send off, latrel mitchel suspended until round 5 in the 2022 season and even then its still not making up for it. Now latrel has been playing cooler rather than going in making rash decisions but that was a grub of a tackle
