These idents will forever be remembered by viewers of Channel 4 and ident and logo enthusiasts, and pretty much everyone who discovered these memorable idents. The CGI is wonderfully animated, and it's from 1982, and animated by the late graphic design master known as Martin Lambie-Nairn, who put all of his heart and soul into these idents. One of the best set of idents for the channel's first branding identity, and one of the best branding identites in the UK, if not, of all time. I may not be alive at the time, but seriously, those are well deserving of the term Iconic. I remember lurking through TVARK and some old VHS tapes, and even I recognize the iconic logo. R.I.P. to Martin Lambie-Nairn. I still can't believe it's been over a year since he's no longer with us, but like the BBC 2 1991 idents, these are also a classic bunch of idents. We've missed you, man.
hm... I thought about this, but they can't be remembered forever by people who will eventually die. Then I thought harder and realized souls were real, so I retract that
YES! I was thrilled when they showed that on the show. I was big into old TV presentation at the time and was surprised they went into detail to bring it back for the show, especially as TV nostalgia wasn't as much of a thing as it became a few years after. I've always wanted to see what Darkplace's trailers and TV presentation looked like during it's brief run in Peru, though!
The original Channel 4 idents were simple and beautiful. The millennial ones were mysterious and interesting, with wonderful variety. The latest ones, where all the fragments just fall into view, have just lost the plot.
I based the music off what Channel 4 used in the 25th anniversary version of the idents. Furthermore, there are many different versions of the music, of which somebody else had already done a video on - ua-cam.com/video/yFZ_jrwizWY/v-deo.html - so it was quite pointless including all of them here for that reason.

You can tell how ahead of their time these graphics were by the fact that they were still used until October 1996 and still looked great at that time.

i like how the explosion ident is just the implosion ident played backwards it makes sense
RIP Martin Lambie-Nairn you designed one of the best tv's ident's to grace our screens god bless you sir
when?
@@Nikotron2000 died Christmas Day 2020
They even honored his memory by playing an HD remake of one of the original idents, originally used (to my knowledge) during Alzheimers Week in 2019!
Cause of death: Yet to be announced.
0:15 “You’re watching the work of Martin Lambie-Nairn, who sadly died on Christmas Day.”
@00:16 the Secret Life of Machines; the VCR.
Finally, I get to see the 4 in all its full definition glory. Untouched by multiple VHS copying. 😁
But was it recorded on sticky tape and rust?
I have it on a t-shirt here. 😊
The classics and for me, still the most iconic Channel 4 idents in their history.
What about the optical illusion idents that were between 2004 and 2015? I loved those idents.
RIP Martin Lambie-Nairn
This even got brought back in 2021!
Oh For The Brand New 80’s Drama it’s A Sin!
Channel Four Turns 40 Years.
These idents just have a certain charm to them
RIP Martin he was a good man
Followed Central TV as they were the first. Central was,way ahead of its time, own produced programmes etc
I wish that channel 4 did a mix of idents from the past and present. The coloured blocks and the metallic walking ident.
A Loving Memory Of Martin Lambie Nairn 1945-2020
I wasn’t even around when these were going but I do like them and wish to see them on tv again
At 0:13 I aleays expect “I’m Garth Marenghi, author, visionary, dreamweaver + actor”

Ahh the good old days!
Wait this was in 1982 this looks so ahead of it’s time
It wouldn't have looked this good at the time on your TV set
I meant the cgi
It was. They had to get an American company to do it as the technology wasn't available in the UK at the time.
The vpro was extremely ahead of its time then in the 70s

0:16 Taken from "Not Without My Handbag" (1993).
Chanel 4 idents from 1982 start up and more and they have blocks
Was the Japanese one made for the Water Margin?
I wana go back 😔
0:08 and then darkplace plays
This upload is misleading, as some of the music heard was from 1992, NOT 1982.
Very poor research on behalf of the uploader

@@superlegendary but some of the ident music was from 1992, so it's still misleading
Was the music on the first example actually around in 1982? I thought it was only used later on.
The music was introduced in 1992, in 1982 they used the 3rd example's music
