My 6 pound mini sledge just busted. I found a 3 x 10 x 24 inch slab of very tight grained white oak in the barn. Going to cut a 2.5 x 2.5 long enough piece to round and shape out on the wood lathe and standing belt sander. Going to let the 6lbs of hammer sit in vinegar for 2 to 3 days to dissolve the surface rust then clean up with the bench wire wheel and blue the steel, cleaning up the drift handle hole to clean steel before using epoxy and setting the handle in and tightening with the steel wedge. The handle just below the hammer I will soak in 50/50 polyurethane and paint thinner to soak a sealing protective inner coat then apply straight polyurethane with 3 more coats between sanding's. I like white oak better than Hickory it is just lasts longer and is much stronger.

That is fantastic! You should offer custom tool handles as a service and do videos.

Next time try gluing and clamping the handle back together with Loctite HY4070 special hybrid adhesive, available from your favorite local or online supplier, but not likely to be found in your favorite big box store. You can wipe clean the surfaces to be joined with brake cleaner or with N-Heptane primer(rubber cement solvent), or not. It sets permanently in 5 to 7 minutes, and that's all there is to it. Each box with the tube of adhesive also comes with 4 approx. 2.5" long mixing tips that mix together the 2 different chemicals as you squeeze the adhesive out of the tip, but which are carefully kept separate inside the tube. Either line up all of your projects to be able to do all of them in order at one time with just one tip, or just order extra tips when you order this truly special adhesive. I have an 18 year old front loading washing machine door that has had a cracked plastic frame held together with black duct tape for years - this week I'll use the Loctite special adhesive to make a permanent repair, but only after manually removing the duct tape and removing the sticky adhesive the tape leaves behind with my friend - brake cleaner! or I'll use n-Heptane, a wonderful product, on the tape and its adhesive simultaneously as I peel the tape off, because the adhesive on the tape releases when soaked with Heptane, but becomes sticky again immediately after the Heptane dries, so you can re-use it.
Try it on stamps and car parking and other decals which can't be removed w/o a VOID message appearing - that doesn't happen with a liberal use of Heptane in a well-ventilated area.

That sounds really interesting and useful. I will have to look into N heptane. Thank you.
