It's really a lovely song... the video for it is well done, too, and worth a look. There's a rather tragic inspiration to the song, their older sister dying at a dance hall.
This song was a tribute to one of his sisters who loved going out dancing. She bought him his first guitar. Oddly enough she died on the dance floor. A beautiful tribute. Saw them in '72 with The Beach Boys, Doors & The Turtles. Saw them in a college gym in '71 with a bout 40 people. It was like a private party. They played whatever people asked for. I asked for Louie Louie and they gladly did it and had a blast doing it.
I was here!!!👌👍✌️😁 Great tribute to his sister is actually based on a sad story. She gave Ray his first guitar and went out dancing, she had a heart attack and died 😢
" Muswell Hillbillies ", an album by The Kinks, is one of the eight albums everyone should have. Ray Davies is one of the greatest exponents of celebrating the english culture, of his generation.
"I'm Not Like Everybody Else" a single released back in 1966 by 'The Kinks' is smokin' hot. 'The Kinks' live version recorded years later of "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" is FIRE! Besides, the lyrics conveyed in the song is compelling as well. 'The Kinks' were included among the many British artists and bands that invaded and flooded America with their chart-topping hits during the 1960's.💫🎤🎸🥁🔊⚡🔥☮🎧
This was my mom's favorite song in the early 80s. I didn't mind it at all but I definitely preferred their prior work. Victoria was a personal favorite.
Saw The Kinks on their "Low Budget" tour in the late 70's, a really great concert. Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson opened for them. The video for "Come Dancing" is a true MTV classic. This song is based on Ray Davies memories of his older sister. She passed fairly young, and this was sort of a memorial to her.
Cool. The Kinks dropped "Come Dancing" when I was in high school. The funny thing about it now is that more years have passed since the song dropped than passed between then and the times the song is about. 1957 was twenty five years before 1982 and 1982 was 43 years before 2025. I'm not sure if I should feel nostalgia for 1982 or 1957! LOL. I usually don't recommend music videos, but the video for this one is fun.
Back in the 60s and 70s, bands would often put out one album a year, or even more. The Kinks were prolific, but 20 albums isn't unheard of. This is a fun song - it's almost got a reggae feel to it - though the story behind it is a sad one (as others have already mentioned). BTW "palais" is a British term for a dance hall. Try the Kinks songs "Days" and "Celluloid Heroes".
One of their last big hits (in the States anyway - they might have had a few more after this on the UK charts). I got to see them live maybe 7 years later and they were still putting on a good show, though the crowds were much smaller than back in their heyday.
This song reminds me of an amusement park, Crystal Beach Canada, one of the oldest in North America, that is sadly now a snobbish gated community. It was established in the 1800's and all "the big bands used to come and play" there, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and others. "Part of MY childhood died" when it was demolished like he says in the song. When the dance hall was torn down, one elderly couple bought wood from the floor and installed it in their house and would dance to swing music every Saturday night. The music sounds like a carousel mixed with big band. I know it is a tribute to his sister who was very young when she died on the dance floor at the local "Palais" and wonder if the old guitar he is playing near the end of the video is the one she gave him, his first guitar. A shame you didn't watch the original video that tells the story. Do yourself a favour and watch that.
Biz, I love you man, so I'm saying this as a fan: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE STOP SINGING! Cultural reference: when he sings "my sister's married and she lives on an estate," it doesn't mean a big house with land etc, as it might sound - an estate is what you'd call a project.
Biz , if you get the chance, watch the video for this. It's a blast!

😢
Yeah, she had a bum ticker. She gave Ray Davies his first guitar.

The Kinks were totally underrated

Haven't heard this in decades! Great tune! Great band!
I love this tune

The kinks "she's got everything" is the kind of song I can listen to 5 times in a row 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This was my mom's favorite song in the early 80s. I didn't mind it at all but I definitely preferred their prior work. Victoria was a personal favorite.
Great reaction, man! Love this song and the album from which it came from.
Definitely one of my favorite Kinks tunes!
This song is very entertaining and I enjoy this band 🎉❤😊👍🌞
I'm here watching the watchers again lol
Great one! Fantastic tune. Always happy to listen to your reactions.
Roller skating to this at 9 yrs old!! Love it 😍
Seems like yesterday
The British blues band Savoy Brown had 31+ albums and did 254 concerts. They are worth checking out.

Superman, Destroyer, Low Budget, Alcohol - all good tunes. Well, anything by the Kinks won't disappoint.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Fun song by them you should react to is “picture book”

Someone needs to react to "Juke Box Music" (1977).
Great song!! Tons of 'em, obv.
How about 'A Rock and Roll Fantasy'? Or anything throughout their career.
✌🏼😁🎷🎺🪕🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
I've jammed it...
This was big for The Kinks. They sold out the concert halls again. How about “She’s Got Everything”? It’s got everything, including Nicky Hopkins.
Next Kinks song??
"This Time Tomorrow"
💃💖
I'm surprised you didn't watch the music video instead. It's great. Check it out.
I believe that Dave Davies inspired heavy metal guitar.
Hey
Great song but the backstory is very sad.
😢
Tell me you've done "Lola"
Heck out the songs. Destroyer. Low budget.
