Great vid, Ben! Loved seeing the CNC process from start to finish, including design, material setup, bit changes, and all the little details. Really helps me understand the whole picture! Can't afford a CNC like that for my own map-making, but dreaming about it!
Awesome video, Ben! It was great to see the whole process including design and all aspects of using the CNC: material prep and placement, probing, bit changes, etc. And actually explaining why you are doing these things, not just “do this then do that.” It really brings everything together for me!
Ben I’ve been watching a lot of videos on using my new onefinity woodworker, I think your video is the best I’ve seen. Showing all aspects of how to do create from start to finish is excellent! Thanks for sharing.
It looks great! That is a nice large mill! Im using a tiny 3018 pro cnc mill. I love it, but its small. 2 tips for doing this that Ive run into now. Im doing my first topographical carve as Im typing this. 1: The blue tape is great, but Ive had the piece come loose. I put the hold down clamps pushing on the side of the piece to keep it from sliding against the tape. 2: Make sure you have access to the spindle for changing the bit. I used a piece of wood covering the whole bed and had the roughing bit installed. When time came to change to the smaller finishing bit, there was no way to remove the roughing bit as the wood was too tall for the bit to slide out. I had to loosen and lift the spindle up to avoid moving the wood piece.

Stumbled across your video and noticed you had an Adams Pest Control shirt on. So I looked into it and you’re in central Arkansas as well! Very cool. I’ve been asking around for someone locally that had a cnc router!
Nice project, couple of thoughts. I use a lot of slab wood so like you do use a planner bit to flatten them. Because I use odd shapes I now screw two alloy battens under them and then screw down to the spoil board, save a lot of time and is very stable. Also you could have programmed a frame around the map with raised edge and finish to save the screw holes and need for tape.
Agree, just center the model and you will have no need for tape. For next time, no real need to flatten the entire top, just the touchoff end (not enough material across the whole board to worry about tool pass depth. Also you can shift the model some to the other end so you can re-touch off the Z on the same spot. Cool project.
4:48 ...hot glue your workpiece to a sacrificial base, a piece of 1/4" ply, laminate, or ??? something bigger than your work piece and clamp that piece down. hot glue is incredibly strong
May have missed you mention it in the video, but about how long did the carving time take in total between the two toolpaths? I’ve been wanting to do some more 3D carving but my biggest problem is just having the time to be home and let my machine run for a full day
Amazing video and exactly what I am learning to do. I do have a couple questions hope you can help:) how long did this take on the cnc to cut? I am using camlab and something like this would take 6-8 hours with their roughing patching "clockwise path" does that software not automatically go clockwise? Does v carve the software you are using work as a all 3 stages? Hope you can help thank you for your time:)
As a cartograph myself working for the german government i would love to have one of these from the german alps but l guess I will never be able to afford such a cnc o to get my hands on one.
nice video. I have 3 questions- 1. can you help me to vectorize topo map of Nepal for cnc 3d reverse carving in soft metal to make a mold? 2. what is the biggest size that your cnc machine can carve? how can I get your machine and what price?

What species would you choose if you had the project to do over again? 1F due to arrive in April, mainly as a result of your influence. I'm loading up the shopping cart and one thing that's boggling my mind is what is the functional difference between RC-2248 and RC-2249 What would be the benefit of getting one or the other? I plan on flattening hard/soft wood both with and against the grain. Thanks for making great content.

What vertical exaggeration factor did you use for Ketchikan? Great Project! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you.
You're welcome!

Very cool! A good friend of mine lives in soldotna
Looks great! Looks like I need to upgrade from vcarve pro to aspire
Go for it!
Great tutorial thanks so much. What do you think something like this would sell for?
Can you save the x-y position before shutting down controller? I'm thinking for very long cuts.
Thanks for showing us how you did this! What brand pigment and color did you use?
Thanks Karen. It's wisebond color shift blue
Nice split ! 🤷♀️
Thanks!
I want to make a map like you have but I have Texas what do you recommend I need it to be 2’ x 2’ six
Just wondering, didn't you add an aftermarket spindle to your 1Finity recently? Was part of this video just done before that?
done before that. Most of my videos are 4 months old or more after i release them. the final shot you can see the spindle.

Beautiful piece, nice cabinet around CNC. Do you have a video on that?
Coming soon! I'm lagging behind on that video. hopefully before the end of the month...
@@MyersWoodshop what is the size of your table for your CNC?
It went vertically because of the text you chose. If it has the @ in front of it then it is turned.

You can set v carve to do raster or conventional. Depending on the machine, this may well take 3-10 hours on a carve.
It also greatly varies with what bit you use.

awesome, as a finish you shoul fill it with clear epoxy that way it wont be hard to clean the dust off or get dirty over time

Sapele (mahogany) is a great wood for carving on the CNC and close to the same price. It's what i use for most of my stuff.

also.. what is the deal with the RC-2265? I wish they clearly stated the specific reason for the different configurations.
More cutters for more cleaner cuts I’d guess. I’m honestly not sure, but the one I have does a fine job!
Can you make one of those for the state of Texas
How much would it be I got a bunch of people would like to have one made of Texas world speedway on a 2’ x 2’ board
Tried downloading the files from the link in the pdf to the usgs, but their server is down. Hopefully, it will be back up soon.

could add a tool touch off plate and it would automatically move to it after you change tool and reset z for you.
onefinity doesn't have one yet.
@@MyersWoodshop does it use its own software? or is it mach3?
Seems like you could have saved a lot of the initial topside fly cutting by just doing the left and right front corners...
maybe, but it only took like 5 minutes extra.
Why didn't you use rest machining and use multiple 3D finishing passes??
not sure
Yes. If the land portion detail was acceptable, a single pass with 1/16" for the text-only would be a quick solution. Nice job either way.
is there any maintenance on this machine? i am trying to decide between the onefinity and the shapeoko
a dab of oil every few months. that's it!
Is aspire a cloud tool?
I just finished building a CNC machine out of scrap. Is there software that doesn't cost $2000?
What would the apx sale price be?
I'd sell this for around $600 us
Do you know if 1F cnc sends worldwide?
I live in the UK and they shipped to me with no problem (check your import taxes first though!)
How long was one flattening pass?
like 3 mins or so.
Why not run it though a planner to flatten it?
because flat on a planner is not flat on a cnc in relation to the gantry on the cnc.

Go steelers!
